Ok. I know I should quit but I don't think I'm ready. Is that bad?
If you're not ready, you're not ready. I'm sick and tired of it. Right now I'm not dating. When I do start again, I'll have more women to choose from. A lot of gals will not date a smoker. |

You really think that's true? I mean me being a gal and all that. I've never not dated someone becuz they smoked, not smoked or picked or not picked his nose (j/k) pass on the later. I judge on looks (yep) and if they make me smile. |

I've had women tell me that. Everyone is different, but people don't smoke these days like they used to. I want more choice, not less. |

I'm female and I used to be someone who would never, ever touch a smoker. But after briefly dating someone who smoked like a chimney and having quite a few friends who smoke regularly, I think I'm immune to it now. It's a different experience dating a smoker, cause when you kiss them and hug them they taste like cigs and they smell like it and eh... It's something I had to get used to. But now I don't mind it as much. ...I'd still prefer to date a non-smoker though, since I don't smoke. |
Do you just smoke when you drink? There are plenty of military guys that come into my work that do that. At least that's what they say. I'm a stress smoker. I'm the opposite. I don't smoke when I drink. Not 1 cig.
Only socially. Probably 2/3rds of the time when I'm drunk, but even then, I'm careful not to develop a smoking dependence when I have been drinking.

Re: How to stop smoking?
She said she "preferred" she still dates smokers. Since I'm not a big smoker I guess its not that big of an issue to me and I'm exposed to it a lot at my job. I just think there is always more to a person than whether he's standing there holding a cig or not. He could be Mr. Right that could quit. :) I commend you for wanting to quit as long as it's for the right reasons. It's gotta be for you and for you only.

Re: How to stop smoking?
TTE, what worked for me was quitting smoking in every instance that I would want a cigarette one by one. I started by not smoking in my car. Months later I stopped smoking at work. Eventually, I stopped smoking after work when I was at home. The only thing that I haven't kicked yet is the urge to smoke when I drink. Honestly, I may have to quit drinking to quit smoking. Some people may say that I am still considered a smoker, but I am happy with what I have accomplished so far. I used to smoke a pack a day. Now a pack would last me a month if the damn things didn't get stale.
Baby steps, no physical aids, just cut back until you stop. Cold turkey just results in relapse. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
That's a good way to do it. Slowly. Where I work I see so many people that smoke when they drink.
|
Re: How to stop smoking?
I smoke when I drink, I am gonna stop. From all accounts, many people I know start becoming regular from that point onwards.
|
Re: How to stop smoking?
Drinking isn't a problem for me. When I did drink, I'd smoke a God-awful amount of cigarettes though.
I broke down and bummed two smokes last night from some friends. One was a Marlboro Red and it was horrible. I'm not giving up though. I haven't had any today. Another friend of mine quit too. He's going on three months. If he can do it, I can too. |

This summer we were out boozing and I bummed off this guy outside of a bar and he gave me a Newport. LOL man, it knocked my socks off. For a minute I thought I was gonna have to sit down on the sidewalk. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
A Newport! That's a buzz waiting to happen. You must've been tanked.

I'd like to thank y'all for the help. This is my first full week without a smoke: Tuesday-Tuesday. It's not as hard as it was. I'm not as pissed and I've a lot of energy. I took up weight lifting again to calm me down.

Re: How to stop smoking?
How long until I'm a former smoker?
ive been a cigarette smoker since i was a lil kid (thanks older brother!). around 2003 i quit smoking for 2 years straight, not a single drag. i was living in san diego at the time. i move back to the metro area, get a nerve raking job, found myself going to bars after work just to let loose alil and i was living with my parents until i found a place of my own on the east coast. the stress, the lifestyle out here in the dc metro area, the traffic, all the uptight people got to me. it went from one drag on a buddys smoke to bummin a smoke to they would just leave me a few to i just decided to buy a pack. ive been smoking ever since, again. i tried quiting again a few years ago, i was back livin the easy life in san diego. this time it was much much harder. while my mind was committed to quiting like it was back in '03, this time my body had this unbearable chemical withdraw feeling that i didnt experience in '03. i had a very difficult time coping, i actually had to take a few days off work b/c my mind and body just werent right. after a week n half, with no relief in my body's chemical demand for tobacco, i started smoking again. i honestly believe that the tobacco companies have added nicotine or some other addictive chemical to try and change the growing trend of smokers successfully quiting. tobacco companies look at us like we are cattle with life time contract dollar signs on us and will do anything to keep their number of cattle up and profitable. they see more and more people are succesfully quiting and they try and change the trend back down to a reasonable single digit success rate for smokers trying to quit. right now ive been putting off quiting again, this time i know i need some kind of chemical help to combat whatever the tobacco companies have added. so now i just try to skip cigarettes. anytime a smoker does something its rewarded with a smoke. "hey lets go get lunch" - have a smoke as im walking there. done with lunch - ahh theres nothing better than a smoke after eating. get in my car - good time for a smoke. sitting in traffic - might as well have a smoke. now i am trying to skip some of these instances that normally would call for a smoke. its hard. go skins!! ps - oh snap, my whole point of this was to answer your question which is never. ive met people who quit for 10, 20 years and got back in the habit. this mindstate helped me do 2 good eyars of not smoking, never give that damn tobacco an inch, never turn your back or let your guard down with thoughts like "oh hell i havent had a drag in 2 months, im bbq, drinking a beer with the boys, i can afford just one drag" = that is the devil talking in your ear my friend. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
Again, I'd like to thank all of you for your support.
My co-workers are going to throw a pot-luck dinner for me today, in honor of my good health. We're celebrating a full month of me not smoking. For everyone that still smokes but wants to quit, it can be done. I feel better than I've felt in years. I've smoked for 16 years and it was a bitch quitting. The first week was hell on Earth. I'm still a little bit aggressive. It can be done. I'm not superhero. If I can do it, so can you. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
nice job, a month w/o smoking is a great accomplishment
|
Re: How to stop smoking?
I think i've reached a breakthrough here. More and more over the last few days i've been thinking about how i WANT to be smoke free. Before i just tried to find ways around it...like "i'll smoke only 1 a day" or something like that.
It hasn't been a hinderance to my training thus far...but the last time i ran, i felt slowed and my lungs felt different. I think its psychological, because i've been conscious of it, but maybe my lungs are finally starting to decline.... |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I personally smoked for a little less then a year. It was then on January 1st that I decided to quit. About a month later I was in a bar, drunk and saw a cigarette box on an empty table with one cigarette left in it. I lit it up (still don't remember how) and about two or three puffs later I remember telling myself that this was stupid and just put it out. Since then I haven't smoked any form of tobacco.
My point being that it amazes me how different we can be, especially with things like addiction. Some people can't resist gambling, others can't stop smoking cigarettes while others can truly stop whenever they want. Personally the only time I've been addicted to a drug was with Painkillers and I only say that because after taking them for a week after surgery I had about two days of slight withdrawals but other then that the addiction gene doesn't seem to run in my blood, at least when it comes to substances. Personally I'm still trying to quit the Warpath but we'll see how that holds up. Anyway keep up the good fight Trample, it's definitely one worth fighting. I also think it's great that you have a strong support structure around you. |
