Although I guess I could care less, it looks like Carter was in office at the time (1980).

Anyway, nice speech. The words themselves carry a lot of weight with me, regardless of who says them.
i don't. i am totally against sending any more troops anywhere. the middle east is a mess. always has been, always will be. unless they have a drastic change on philosophy( which i highly doubt) and as far as the award, it was awarded long before this decision was made. should he have won it? that's water under the bridge
I am curious (especially with your earlier "read the speech" comment) did you read his speech? I thought he made a point of addressing that specific sentiment.
But in many countries, there is a disconnect between the efforts of those who serve and the ambivalence of the broader public. I understand why war is not popular. But I also know this: The belief that peace is desirable is rarely enough to achieve it. Peace requires responsibility. Peace entails sacrifice. That is why NATO continues to be indispensable. That is why we must strengthen U.N. and regional peacekeeping, and not leave the task to a few countries. That is why we honor those who return home from peacekeeping and training abroad to Oslo and Rome; to Ottawa and Sydney; to Dhaka and Kigali — we honor them not as makers of war, but as wagers of peace.
edit: I am not agreeing/disagreeing with this full quote, just thought that a hardcore supporter (that's you dmek) would openly contradict Lord Obama.

im not sure who you support, but everyone has their own beliefs as far as the way things are run. just because i voted for Obama doesn't mean that i agree with everything he says/ does. one of my biggest gripes with Bush was that he was so secretive in the way he handled our matters. at least( so far) Obama has been very transparent

I can't recall specifics, but Obama has been anything but "transparent". Pretty sure alot of criticism was leveled at how the stimulus was handled. And not sure what Bush's secretiveness (is that even a word) has to do with Obama's specific disparagement of your position about deploying troops.

No, not really. I thought he explained his position quite well and was realistic about what's going on in the world.

Yeah ok his speech was nice, but thats his strongest attribute, speaking, thats what helped him get elected. But I still dont understand how/why he deserved the nobel peace prize.

Obama was transparent in posting jobs he said to create in districs that are not even there.

I find it humorous that some people are blaming Obama for doing what should have been done a long time ago.

Let's blame Obama for trying to finish this thing off, but let's not blame who started the mess. It's like hating the janitor because a kid puked on the steps.

You mean the people who attacked us on 9/11? If you look at my responses it not knocking Obama for sending 30,000 more troops I'm laughing at the people who picked him for the Peace Prize when we are fighting a war.
