The Obama administration has appointed a "Rooney Rule" Czar to oversee the adherence of minority interviews in the NFL. |

"The Rooney Rule Is A Joke" Unfortunately teams have to give the impression that they are in total compliance. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
Look, people are looking at Shanahan just as a coach, but also look at some of the players he's drafted the past few years, All Pro LT Ryan Clady, Jay Cutler, Eddie Royal,
Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, Ryan Harris (starting RT), Elvis Dumervil, Domenik Hixon (now of the Giants), Dominique Foxworth, the late darrent williams, and DJ Williams. Thats from 2004 to 2008. Thats pretty damn good team of players if you ask me. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
No. You know what the F'ing issue is now? I keep hearing that the media have contacted the NFL and have been advised that the Redskins did satisfy the Rooney Rule several times over. The media has asked for the names of who was contacted and they were told they don't give out the names of contacted personel due to privacy issues.
Now the media is playing it that as the Skins did not make it known the job was available so they could interview whoever they wanted instead of interviewing well over qualified candidates. In other words some candidates who might have been better qualified did not get interviewed because they did not know the job was available to apply for. Who the hell cares? The rule is in place saying they have to interview someone. It doesn't say they have to hire the best candidate. Last I knew the owners owned their teams and could interview whoever they wanted and hire whoever they wanted. Are we now going to put stipulations on owners as to who they can talk to and who they can hire? Who cares if there were more qualified candidates out there....perhaps Snyder didn't feel he could get along with them so he didn't interview them. I think we all know what happened, but I think it's idiotic for the media to start complaining even after they have been told the team met the rule.
Exactly; this isn't the type of business that you put up a NOW HIRING sign and accept resumes. You interview who you invite, I haven't heard much complaining though, link? |

Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
I think there is a big difference between having an issue with the Rooney Rule and having an issue with the media making a big deal out of it. If you have a problem with the latter, well deal with it. The media is going to dig up any shit on any team to get their headlines and that's a fact of life. Right now, none of the proponents of the Rooney Rule have said anything about the Redskins not sticking to the rule guidelines. All that has happened is that Mike Florio and other people are just digging up shit to make a story and that's it.
As far as the Rooney Rule, as many have said, it was put in place to give minority candidates (who otherwise may be overlooked) an opportunity to be exposed to the interview process. I don't think there's anything in the Rooney Rule that says that you have to hire a minority. I don't think the Rooney Rule is taking jobs away from white coaches and executives. And if teams are having "sham interviews" well, why do people bitch about that? It is up to the candidate to decide if they want to go through these interviews...and honestly, while it may suck interviewing in this situation, but it may give a minority candidate the opportunity to learn from this interview process. |

The reason I ask is some of the owners are much older than you and I. They are from an era where discriminating because of race or religion was discreetly being done and behind closed doors was acceptable. The attitude was not necessarily I hate minorities, it was more an attitude of 'I will never have a black GM or coach or QB.' There are certain high visibility/high profile positions that were not acceptable to have a minority. I remember all the death threats QB Major Harris, the first successful QB at WVU was getting for playing QB. That was in the early 1980's. We are not talking about the 60's. Depending on your age you may not have been around to see this and other situations just like this one. Imagine the pressure and threats the Dean and Coach at WVU wer getting for playing a black QB? |

Money is a big issue here. Zorn has every reason not to accept a demontion if it means renegotiating his salary, which probably would since management would understand the problems that could be caused by having an assistanc coach get paid a head coach salary. |

I would be shocked if he fired Blache. The biggest qusestion I have is would Blache want to continue to coach. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
The way Snyder feels about Blache and Gray, they may get a shot. I think they have some respect around the NFL. Of course if Snyder has truly learned, it won't be his decision to make.

That's one way to look at it; however I look at that as "taking lemons and trying to make lemonade." It doesn't change the underlying truth that discrimination is taking place - minority coaches (or execs) get token interviews while non-minority coaches don't. Or, on the flip side - minority coaches get manipulated when they have no chance of getting a job; where as non-minoirty coaches arent. I may be naive, but I don't think the rule, as its currently designed, has ever done any good. Mike Tomlin was not a Rooney-Rule Interview. He would have been interviewed regardless of his skin color. However, we all know no one has ever seriously considered hiring Ron Meeks to be their head coach. Yet, he interviews for jobs every year. Its a sham and its degrading. |

Blache seems so hard to gauge with the way he acts. Doesnt want to talk to the media b/c he is fed up...but comes to the defense of his Owner and then talks about the love he has for his players in regards to the probowl. I remember hearing several years ago he had to be talked back into staying in Washington and was going to retire. I would like him to stay, I like his ass kicking approach to the players, even if it ruffles some feathers (Carlos)...And Dan Snyder seems to love the guy |

I'm really hoping JLC's report that we're looking at bringing in DeCosta is true as well. I only really have two concerns with Shanahan has our HC 1) his lines in denver were always the smaller, more agile type and i'm not sure that type of line would hold up well in this division. 2) He'll get rid of our defensive staff and system and our defenses will be as instable as his were in Denver. If Shanahan can somehow be convinced to keep our system in place with either Blache or Gray as coordinator, and Shanahan sticks to running the offense (our defenses have pretty much had full autonomy for most of the past decade), then we're not far off from being a truly great team again. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
I think the Shanahan ("The Rat" look when he smiles, Raiders call him that) rumor is pretty much a done deal, the move to get Bruce Allen with 3 games left on the season is to get a jump on someone like the Cowboys who are also rumored to be enamored with Shanahan. Probably after they play SD, as soon as the game is over, Zorn is fired and Shanahan is named HC. That's my theory.

I would think it would be a major upgrade for us. We haven't been real consistent in that dept although we've had some good years. Denver's been pretty good in that dept no matter the division. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
If we get Shanahan, he'll definetely bring his guys to coach the O. He'd be smart not to mess with our D but as BHA pointed out, his DC's come and go. If he doesn't, Blache, depending on if he still wants to coach is our DC, if not it's Gray. Very simple

Thats true, but the redskins face much stronger and bigger defensive lines, so i'm somewhat concerned. I wonder how many running backs we'll take in the draft if Shanahan's hired. I don't see him being very happy with the depth we have here. |

EEO is Rooney Rule=Affirmative Action. The intent of the rule is designed to obtain a fair and unbiased result, the problem is, there's no safeguard in place to ensure the rule is fairly implemented. If an owners heart is unfair, you can change the rule, make new rules, but rules can't change the heart. |
Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
The Rooney Rule is garbage.... no one says we should try out white RBs before we sign a black one....its a freaking joke. The NFL is about winning, if an owner is still dumb enough to NOT hire the best coach for the job regardless of color his record will prove his incompitence. The rule is insulting and demeaning.
I was thinking the same thing but couldn't put into words. I often wondered why minorities and non minorities don't get upset about affirmative action. To me it send two negative messages: 1) The Gov. is applying a rule that discriminates against non minorities. 2) It sends a message that minorities can't get a job based on their own qualifications. If I was a minority I think I would be mad that I was given the job solely because the business needed to hire a minority vs. me being better qualified then the other applicants and getting the job due to hard work and diligence. I do understand that there are lots and lots of instances where minorities are discriminated against because they are a minority, and they don't get the job even though they are the better candidate. I don't know. I don't mean to piss people off but the message just seems bad. (A) We will discriminate against non minorities in order to correct a wrong against minorities, and (B) The Gov. is calling minorities inferior and making a law to level the playing field. I know the law was put in place to combat discrimination but it should be changed to either protect all americans no matter what color or nationality or eliminate it all together. If we keep the law then tweek it so the business or whoever is punished severely for their discrimination. but as someone else said ...in the NFL its kinda the old boys club and they would interview the janitor and say we interviewed someone to satisfy the rule instead of actually interviewing a qualified candidate or they would interview a qualified applicant to only give it to who they want to be their next GM or HC. The law only says they have to interview someone not that they have to be qualified or seriously considered. |
