Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
According to Adam Schefter (via Twitter):
Looks like Washington has the tiebreaker over Kansas City for the fourth pick in the draft, but NFL won't have official order till Monday.
So it looks like... 1. St. Louis (will they take a QB or a Defensive Player?) 2. Detroit (they need to take a defensive player...Suh or (Gerald) McCoy 3. Tampa Bay (the only team that may realistically take Okung...but maybe not) 4. Washington (I think...[I hope/pray] that this pick gives us a good chance of picking up Okung) |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I can see Bradford dropping like Quinn & Rodgers because of his injury

Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I'm thinking the Rams select a QB... now whether they trade down, or take Clausen or Bradford #1 (which would be high) ... but they NEED a franchise QB... period.
The Lions can't pass on Suh... he is the next Haynesworth... IMO The Bucs are the ones tough to figure. Depends on who their coach is really. Morris MAY be gone... but they definitely could go for Okung. If Bradford and Okung are gone by the 4th pick? The best thing we could do is try and trade back to the T. Williams, B. Campbell, A. Davis range (they are all rated together after Okung).... but who'd want to trade up to 4? Not likely... so then what? |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
yeah looks like we have the #4 pick. you really have to take okung there, or trade down.
|
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
If you want to add another pro bowler on this squad, then you draft Okung. If you want to build a stronger team then you trade down and get more picks. It's as simple as that. I know a lot of us love the idea of drafting Okung. What can I say; the guy's a beast. But, what about the other parts of the Oline?
|
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
Seahawks could be an interesting trade partner. They have a top 10 pick (I think) and then another in the middle of the first round. Could convince them they need to move into the top 5 if they want a QB
The rumor right now, and keep in mind it's only January, is that the Lions are targeting Okung with the 2nd pick |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I think "new and improved" FO personnel and coaches could smooth out the oline issues w/o as much trouble as we might expect otherwise. I mean it's possible the interior of the line could be set Dock, Rabach and a backup, and Rinehart/Mike Williams at RG. So basically we need to starting tackles. I trust no real football guy will let Heyer start another pro game (the same could be argued about Rabach probably). So drafting Okung wouldn't necessarily mean the FO sacrifices the rest of the group...and Lord knows we need another Pro Bowl LT to be competitive anyway. Then we get a RT in the 2nd round, grab a quality FA, or possibly convince Levi to switch in order to remain a starter. I doubt Levi will start at LT again in his career anyway tho I could be dead wrong.

Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I would also say we don't need to add much talent on defense as much as add much better coaching on defense. A quality FS to replace Landry and possibly a quality LB should do the trick. Wilson looked dec at OLB and certainly has the size to play the position, and would be coming into his 2nd year at the position.
|
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I think that even if Okung were available we're not taking him. I think we'll go OL in the 2nd round and probably 4th (3rd if we can trade back into there). But my gut feeling tells me we're not taking Okung in the first round.

So a QB in the first? |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
SS, what three players make your gut tingle then? Personally, as much as we need OL help -- I dont know if Okung is a long term LT in this league. Maybe Im wrong, you'd know far more about that than I would. I actually love Suh (he'll be gone) and Berry with the pick. Not sure if either will be available. Then I like Pike in the 2nd, but would be thrilled if we get the top G or good T in the 2nd.

You better get on the Bradford band wagon, that way you won't be disappointed on draft day. |

If we don't draft Okung with the #4, then I would want the team to trade down. Now that Allen is in charge, I would hope to have a more savvy front office that would get a good price (multiple picks) for that #4. |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
Everyone says trade down, but when was the last time a team traded into the top 5? Was it recently? What was the compensation? I have a feeling we can say trade down all we want, but it takes two to tango, and very few teams are willing to move up. It takes too much green to sign the player and picks to move up.

Last year Mark Sanchez, don't recall the compensation the Jets gave the Browns |
Last year Mark Sanchez, don't recall the compensation the Jets gave the Browns
The Jets traded their first- and second-round choices (17 and 52), plus three marginal players - defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff and safety Abram Elam. |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
I feel like we should trade back down. Imagine if a team came at us with a Cleveland/Jets type scenario where they give us a guy (maybe decent o-line guy?) and an additional first round pick so that would give us two first rounders as well as a decent prospect? Like maybe Seattle with their two first rounders and a guy like Ray Willis if they were willing to do that because they might want to move up for an Okung or top qb prospect? As asinine as that sounds it's all about that trade value chart and the fourth pick could net a decent offering. I feel we need to trade down and pick up more draft choices and build with that instead of taking whatever top prospect is available at #4.

I think so, unless they think Spiller is worth taking at #4 which I don't think they do. If they don't take a QB in the first round then I wouldn't rule out Jevan Snead if he declares. He could be there in the 4th and he has a lot of the qualities Shanahan likes. A real sleeper could be Rolando McClain But I haven't really heard any names being mentioned yet. Last year at this time I heard a lot of Brian Cushing...who, of course, wasn't the pick |

Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
It's official we will get the 4th pick in the draft... The chiefs beat us so they get 5th.
I don't have a link but ESPN just had it on sportscenter.. I would say Bradford is the guy simply because STL will draft SUE and the other 2 teams won't draft a QB. (DET, TB) |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
Who was it that kept saying that head to head record doesn't matter in determining draft order? Head to head record is always the first thing in determining any tiebreaker as far as I know, why would it be any different in regards to draft order? But seriously though, on that draft value chart, that's a big difference between the top five picks in the draft. That could really help us if a team wanted to try and trade into the top five if a player they really want was available there.

We know Detroit and Tampa aren't going QB with #2 or #3. I'm not sure if there's a QB worth #1, and with Spags running the show, I could see him taking either Berry or Suh. If it plays out like that, we'd have our choice of any QB. I'd still rather move out of the 4th pick if possible and land a QB in the 2nd all the while adding picks. If we're 4th and Okung is there, gotta take him. The Senior Bowl is right around the corner. Guys are gonna drop and rise. It's gonna be a wild offseason for Redskins fans. |
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
Head to head doesn't matter as much as strength of schedule when it comes to draft order. The league feels it's a better indicator
|
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
Just curious as to how far we could trade down and still be able to select Bradford?
|
Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
^ not too far wald, he is the number 1 qb prospect according to kiper and mcshay
Head to head doesn't matter as much as strength of schedule when it comes to draft order. The league feels it's a better indicator
Thanks for clearing that up for me. I can kinda see why that is but I always thought in past offseasons that head to head was the #1 tiebreaker for some reason. I was consulting the draft pick value chart and the 4th pick is worth 1800 points. That's pretty good value because if the right team came along we could possibly get 2 first rounders out of that deal. According to the chart, the first pick is 3000 points, 2nd is 2600, 3rd is 2200, and 4th is 1800, whereas the fifth is only 1700, which means the difference between the 4th and the 5th would be the 4th pick of the fourth round, which is 100 points. Also if we were interested in trading players along with draft picks there's infinite possibilities. Lets say for make believe purposes the Seahawks want Campbell as their qb, and Shanny decides he wants Bradford. Well, according to the picks the Seahawks have, which are the 6th (1600 points) and the 16th assuming that's what the Broncos pick is (1000 points), they could trade us both of those for the 4th pick and Campbell, assuming they value him as worthy of 800 points of draft value. So my only point out of all this is that we could have some serious trade bait in the instance we decide to go that route. Should be an interesting offseason this year. Just in case anybody else wants to explore possible draft pick trade scenarios and formulate their own theories about possible trades, here's the draft pick value chart. I could go further in depth with this but I think it's illogical considering how much trading of draft picks goes on before and during the draft. Anything could happen with any of the picks, and I've seen crazier stuff happen to believe that anything's possible. At least if we decide to trade down not only will we have pretty decent ammunition draft picks wise, but we might also try to get rid of some players as well. Re: Can We Draft as High as 3rd Overall?
This years draft dosen't seem to have the elite players that I have seen in years past. I think if you don't get Suh or Berry, then being in the top 5 dosen't even matter... that's just me though

(DET, TB)
It's not set and stone they will select Suh they already pick that DE/DT Adam Carriker & DE Chris Long in the previous years they need a franchise QB. If he is worth drafting after the combine & his pro day then Bradford will mostly likely go #1 to the Rams. I still think that the Jimmy is a late 1st round pick and that might be the way to go or Pike in the 2nd round. |

Word on the street is that Shannahan likes Bradford better. What makes you think he would choose Clausen over Bradford if both were available at 4? My only regret is that this quote is from PFT:
From the same sources that the rumblings of Shanahan-to-the-'Skins have been emanating for months comes word that the Redskins and Mike Shanahan will target Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with Washington's first-round pick in the draft.
This is from the ESPN rumor section:
The Redskins could pick as high as No. 5. One player they are likely looking at is Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, who was projected to be the No. 1 pick last season before he decided to go back to school. According to Scouts, Inc.'s Todd McShay's mock draft, the Redskins will nab Bradford with the No. 7 pick. Also available at the top of the first round is Jimmy Clausen. At the top of the second round, they may also have a shot at Tony Pike.
Keep in mind I'm not saying you're wrong. You could very well be right but right now all arrows are pointing towards the team targeting Bradford. |

Isnt Okung the logical choice for us? Not glamorous, but we need a young anchor.

These "arrows" must be incompetent ESPN writers. If we draft Bradford instead of a lineman, next year could be worse than this season. I think Bruce Allen is smarter than that. Besides, JC should have really impressed him yesterday. |

We can still get solid OL at the top of the 2nd and there are a couple FA OT available.

Steve Spagnuolo is a defensive guy. I think they'll take either Suh or Berry. Both are needs, and both are better pro prospects than any QB out there. It's a relatively deep QB class. They could maybe get Suh and then McCoy with the first pick of the 2nd round. I absolutely do not think Stl will go QB with #1 overall. |
