Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
Someone once said leaders are not made, they're born. As an organization, for the past decade a culture has been established which fosters both the lack of discipline and accountability. Perhaps the new regime will establish a strictly adhered to "chain of command" that will filter player complaints through the proper channels.
When it comes to player discipline (or lack thereof) there are a few players who both past and present stick out like a sore thumb, no need to call them out because we all know who they are. Once the culture that permits these distractions to flourish is changed, discipline and accountability issues can easily be eradicated. |
Players can only take leadership so far. When they're not getting the support from above, it basically undermines any sort of peer leadership. I think leadership is something that needs to start at the top and work it's way down. It's hard to go the other way.
Well said. Allen has already displayed more leadership than Cerrato ever did. Hopefully whomever he hires as HC will clean house and get rid of Portis and every other player who allegedly "went over Zorn" to Snyder or Cerrato needs to be removed from the team at the first possibility. Get rid of the rotten eggs and leaders will emerge. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
It's just kind of curious to me with Rock especially because his teammates voted him a team captain. I would have assumed that implied they looked up to him as a leader and expected to be one on the field and in the locker room.

Yeah but he never ever went out and signed guys himself. He never went out and got free agents. He left that up to the football people. Plus he never hung out or socialized with players. I think those days are over for Snyder now tha Allen is here. Or let's hope so. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
heard a soundbite from rock this morning as i was coming into work. he said the skins lacked alil bit of discipline and that there are 2 types of players in the skins locker room. rule guys and guideline guys. rule guys must follow the rules and guidelines guys set their own guidelines.
thats not good for team chemistry and all that other intangible stuff that goes into winning. |

Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
Some people can not be lead, by anyone, no matter what is said or done. How is Rock going to put a boot in CPs or anyone elses arse and have any effect at all. CP was above the law, knew it and had grown acustom to it. Doctors don't try and get cancer to work well within the body, they try to remove it while keeping the body as healthy as possible.

Great article and it highlighted what I've been saying all along, the chain of command was screwed up and it affected the team's performance.

This is absolutely what this team needs and has been lacking. |

If thats the case what does it mean for Allen. Is he a true GM or just a cap guy with no real power? I think what powers Shanny's deal gives him will speak volumes as to how this might work out. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
Last year everyone knew that the O-line was a big problem. (It has been for a while.) It was discussed in depth by the WP and on this board. The problem was left to fester and we see the results. Although, not all of this team's problems can be blamed on the o-line.
This year we know Clinton Portis and the "Me-First" players are a problem along with the o-line. (This has been a problem for awhile.) The question is, does Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have the ability under Synder to do what needs to be done. In case you didn't know. (Yes, this is just my opinion.) 1) Get rid of Clinton Portis. 2) Draft O-linemen. 3) Get some decent FA O-linemen. 4) Put foot to ass. 5) Use players to the best of their ability. Did I mention draft Tackles, Guards, and Centers? |

As far as the TEAM, he should have power. The players shouldn't be running to the owner or GM, they should answer to the coach. |

Allen's role will be just like it was in Tampa, just like Heckert in Philly, just like other places I can't think of right now. He will oversee the scouting and the overall draft/trade/free agency process (who's available, who to interview, who to invite for tryouts, etc). He will maintain order in the organization and provide Shanahan with information and insights and give him basically the best ammo to make a strong decision. |

When people hear GM, people seem to think it means that one person calls all the shots when it comes to the draft/personnel, etc. When more often they are an executive who oversees the front office operations, but isn't necessarily the main decision maker. |

So will Allen work for Shanny or Shanny for Allen? |

They'll work with each other. But ultimately Allen will work for Shanahan. That doesn't mean he will never say no to him. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
Great thread! I enjoyed reading all the posts so far.
I'm glad players are speaking their mind but it feels a little like they are trying to side step the blame. Rock had to step up this year and didn't. The same goes for Fletcher, Smoot, Daniels, Rabach and Campbell. The team is much bigger than Portis or Haynesworth. Who was getting in Devin Thomas and Malcom Kellys face when they didn't practice or perform? Who got in the face of Carlos Rogers and Laron Landry when they blew a coverage for the 3rd time in a game? With all the injuries we've had this year a lot of young players had an opportunity to step up and only Fred Davis had a significant impact. What I am most excited about is that the new coach and gm have no ties to any of the players on the team can/will be cut at any time. It's time for Devin Thomas, Malcom Kelly, Marko Mitchell and others to earn their roster spot. I would like to think that everyone on the opening day roster earned their roster spot. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
There's a synopsis from a Cooley interview on that other redskins fan site and i think its very interesting that Cooley said Campbell wasn't a leader.
|
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
I talked about leadership and accountability way back in September. The leaders of a west coast offensive-minded team like the redskins needed to be the head coach and the quarterback - in performance, character, and discipline. I think both Zorn and Campbell has character, but do not have the other 2.

I kind of expected that Allen would just be used as a cap type guy instead of a true GM. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
So I guess Daniels, Wynn, and Rock thought it was another players roll to become a team leader and now they sit back and are complaining about no other player doing so. I agree that maybe the front office and Zorn helped with the issue but how can they complain about no player taking the roll when they could have done so themself. QB should be that player but we know that JC is no leader from what I have seen. Can anyone recall JC going up to a player on the sidelines and getting in their face and making them listen to him while he explains what needed to be done. I can't, and maybe that because he was also making so many mistakes.

I think you (or the other site) is misconstruing what he said. Cooley said Campbell has tried to be the leader and has done a decent enough job but the position he was put in by the front office-with all the talk of trying to trade him-has made it difficult for him to assume a full leadership role. My personal opinion is that that shouldn't be an excuse. They weren't trying to trade him last season when he could have and should have assumed a leadership role, and he's not the first person to be dangled out there as trade bait only to return to his team. Still, I don't quite think that Cooley was saying Campbell is not a leader in the definitive sense that you're implying. |
Never mind last year. How about the roster on 1/4/10
i just heard portis did the same thing, i was listening to 106.7 and they were talking about portis' comments saying campbell wasn't a leader, i can't find anything on it anywhere, they had a guy from the washington examiner talking about it, john something. anyone know where to find transcripts of the two interveiws? it's weird that they would both say it on the same day, and i thought jc and cooley were boys, i know half the team is done with portis |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
thomas boswell pretty much summed up this thread in one paragraph, great article
The Redskins' next coach needs to understand what he's getting into. Redskins fans need to understand how much patience they will need. The owner must grasp that, after 11 years, this mess is his and he needs to get out of the way of the professionals. And the players, who know exactly what's wrong with them, need to take responsibility for their own team. When they start acting like winners, instead of just talking like it, they'll have a chance. I admire plenty of things about JC(he is one tough dude), but he has way too much Otis Redding music running through his head.
Hey it's a great life "sittin on the dock of the bay" I just don't think that type of laid back casual personality has a chance in hell of being a great NFL leader. The guy is probably better suited to be a professional fly fisherman. |

Funny but I don't recall Joe Montana being any sort of fired up guy. Hell they called him Joe Cool. Just saying a perceived laid back guy can also be a leader.

Leadership definitely comes in different forms. I think JM's leadership started with what he did on the field. |
Re: Redskins lacked leadership, accountability - WP
Holy shit.. Jason really went after him, deservedly of course. I'd like to see JC get a little more fire into himself on the field. You blow a block, blitz pickup, route... get in their face a little bit.
