Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
Zimmer became a major reason that cincinnati is still playing football. We have a strong defense that he could lead.
Does anyone know how they can get Zimmer, when it sounds like a latteral promotion. I was under the impression that latteral promotions are not allowed. Is he not under contract next year.
from what i understand, he is in his final year of his contract. they offered him a new contract during their bye week, and he turned it down. i think. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
here is some info on the subject via florio. for what its worth.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I'm interested in Rob Ryan as well. I think it's a lock Zimmer has the job though. I just have a feeling Shanahan has his team picked out. Some maybe in the play offs and he has to wait some maybe available. It just came to me wondering if Shanahan told all the people he wants to bring in.... "If you hear that I'm taking the job then the owner agreed to bring you all on board for the price you asked." "If you hear it know it's a lock." but he has to wait for some one like Zimmer to be completely done with the play offs before he can move in.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
Retaining Gray in Zimmers staff would not be a bad idea. I don't think the players using off coverage is Gray's choice, rather than a use of the total system.
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I honestly would not be surprised if Gray is the next DC. He had to have been promised something to stab Zorn (and minority coaches everywhere) in the back the way he did.
Hey BHA, what do you think of John Mara firing Sheridan up in NY? Isn't it overstepping the owner's role?
I'm not familiar with their front office structure. Is the owner also the GM? If not, then perhaps there were differing opinions between the GM and owner on what needed to be done. I certainly think there is more than meets the eye going on behind the scenes in New York (my personal crazy conspiracy theory is that they'll end up with Cowher before its all said and done). Either way, i was half expecting coughlin to be fired as well. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
Jerry Reese is NY's GM.
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
cowher is going to Buffalo or Jacksonville if Del Rio is let go.

Mike Nolan's Defenses avg. 30 plus turnovers/ year . J. Gray if he is more aggressive than GB . R. Crennel is a fine DEF Coach .

i like gregg williams even though it wont happen, i have a feeling jerry gray will have some role on the defense especially after he hooked snyder up with that rooney rule bullshit interview
I had thought maybe none of the holdovers would be retained, but I agree about Zimmer & Gray, providing none of Blaches' personality has rubbed off on him. I'd say keep on Wachenheim too, he's only been here a year. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I want Zimmer....
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I think a rookie would say...I better work my ass of if that coach doesn't talk to rookies and try to earn a spot as a starter.
that's called incentive. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
GRAY as Defensive Cordinator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totaly disagree with that one!!!! Unloyal POS is what he is. Just in MHO. Keep the Rats off the New SHip!!!
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
We need new coaches who don't have (misplaced) loyalties to any of the players. its the only way to ensure the best players start.
GRAY as Defensive Cordinator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totaly disagree with that one!!!! Unloyal POS is what he is. Just in MHO. Keep the Rats off the New SHip!!!
question, where should any coach's loyalty lay? to the head coach or to the team. If a HC told a position coach to do something particularly bad for the team, should that position coach do it to stay loyal to the HC, or look at the team's best interest. I don't know Jerry Grays motivations, but by the time he was interviewed it was pretty clear that JZ was not staying around, also clear that the best thing for the team was to be prepared to name the next coach asap. I don't get the unloyal pos talk, and I think it's sad that people are labeling him anything other than a team guy. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
^ I agree, why would be loyal to a guy you only met 2 years ago.
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I just get a bad vibe from him (interviews, news clips tec.). Its just my opinion. I've been in the coaching buisness for 20 years and he reminds me of some bad run-ins I had with poor coaches. And I have a hard time seeing where Jim Zorn told him to do something that wasnt in the teams interest.
|
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I don't care if Gray is loyal or not. Our Secondary can't tackle, cover, or catch. Cover may be a scheme issue but tackling and holding onto the ball when it hits your hands is a coaching issue when it has gone on as long as it has.

Maybe he's following orders from Blache as to what scheme to run or player position? |
I think Mike Zimmer will happen (the Bengals won't pay him what Danny will), and I wouldn't mind him bringing in his son Adam from the Saints to coach LBs work as maybe asst DC.
I'm also good with Zimmer but I don't want any more sons of coaches on our sidelines. I'm not thrilled with MS having his son as a coach because what happens if he is a problem what does Mike do then? Its just a tough situation if the son falls down on the job. |

I really think part of it was scheme, our Zones had more holes than Spongebob, but the other two are inexcusable. |

We know Smoot, Landry and Hall are not exactly the worlds best tacklers and should work on it. |

I was not saying that Zorn had. Just trying to make the point that the loyalty lies to the team, not to the head coach. |

How does a Gray defense play? |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
Doc Walker was on WPL today and endorsed Gray. He liked the idea of there being less of a transition to a different defense with Gray in charge. Gray or Zimmer would be an improvement IMO.

Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
#1. I must have missed some recent news that has eluded to the fact that Gray is unloyal. Are you guys refering to his interview and Zorn? I'll ask this..... if it is...... how do you guys know positively for sure that Gray didn't go to Zorn to run it by him and with Zorn knowing he was out the door, didn't give his approval to go to the interview?
Just because the media didn't talk about it, or it has never been mentioned does not mean it didn't happen. #2. Why do people think he's a great candidate? I mean he has been on this team for 6yrs and has not made our CB position any better. The excuses keep piling up for him.... "Oh it was the scheme he had to work with" - If it was the Scheme why then do we want to keep him cause he's going to run the same crappy scheme. Why not change to a whole new phylosophy in regards to the 4-3 if thats what they want to stay with or change to another scheme. #3. He does crappy interviews, sometimes rude when questions were asked. Lets move on. Lets get a fresh start. Bring someone in that will not pick favorites or take sides. When you have cancer you have to cut it all out. Not leave a little in hopes it will work out. It won't. |

Bruce Allen, Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, and Mike Zimmer. In any case, I don't want Gray...just because he used to be a D coordinator does not automatically make him good. The secondary took a step back this year...poor tackling...that is his job to teach, Carlos Rodgers regressed under Gray too, Landry had regressed heavily...even Smoot..none of the young guys have developed either...You guys throw our WR Coach Hixon under the bus...what is the love affair with Gray...sure he did ok in Buffalo...but after he was left to his own devices, the d got worse...especially his last year, when he was fired....and throw that continuity crap in the trash...do you really want 4-12 to continue? Zimmer on the other hand has done such an amazing job that he may get a head coach role...if we can get him as a D coordinator it would be a score on that basis alone....my concern is this...his wife just died suddenly less than 3 months ago...he has 3 girls...If I were him, there is no way I'd take on a head coach job and essentially abandon my girls when they need me the most. The best thing for him is to stay put in cincinnati...if he comes here great, but that doesn't mean his head will be in the game...his family has just been devestated...I just don't know if that would be good for the Skins. I don't know much about Haslett but I do know he was head coach of the year and had good defenses...that if far superior to anything Gray has accomplished. Ask yourself this question. Are you sure Gray is better than Blache? I am not. We have to be pretty picky to change D coordinators when we were top 10 in the league...only 9 other guys did better....Zimmer is one of them...the rest are not available or are big question marks. |
Re: Defensive Coordinator for 2010
I'd like to throw Jim Mora's name out there now as a potential DC now that he is no long the head coach in Seattle.

Defensive players on the team seem to be pulling for Jerry Gray to take over so I don't know how much that will factor into Shanahan's decision making
