I was surprised to learn that he was 33-31 as a head coach in the NFL. In fact he was 27-21 as the Patriots head coach. Fired after going 8-8 in his third year and replaced by Belicheck.
That's surprising to me too. I thought from all the negativity surrounding his NFL career he was way below .500. For what it's worth I think he'll do well in Seattle but their team is in dire straights talent wise. Old beat up bodies and never-will-bes all around. |

Why? Either way you still are a champ. What is wrong with happy go lucky if you still win? |

Some people just react differently man, no big deal. Remember Saban learned a lot from Belichick. |

Oh wow, now JMJ and his Daddy can't blame Michael Vick for JMJ's misfortunes. JMJ is one of those good coordinators who should never be a head coach. And the way he singled out his kicker didn't sit well with me.
CARROL? How can anyone be surprised that he will consider leaving USC?
Read the writing on the wall: If he stays, he essentially gets executed by brewing NCAA investigations into illegal recruitment and player misconduct going back 6-8 years. Let's go ahead and call a spade a spade like Bob Knight did about John Calipari. Carrol's going to skip town out of LA because it won't be for long that the last 5 years of wins and championships will be stripped from USC. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH "nothing else to prove at the college level"
Ah hah, well that explains why he's leaving USC. |
re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
So this makes our pick at 4th more valuable, right? Hasslebeck isn't a young guy, but a great mentor to the franchise QB that Seattle needs (plus the new Seattle coach may want a new QB). Since The Warpath can't even come close to a consensus on do-we-or-don't-we draft a QB with the 4th pick, do we trade down with Seattle so they can get in position for a top QB?

Hasselbeck has been hit with injury bug in Seattle recently so we could possibly trade back with them. Buffalo might want a franchise QB also. |

The LA Daily News is reporting that the Seahawks have agreed to a 5 year, $35M contract with Pete Carroll (heard it on Comcast Sportsnite, no link). I can't believe he'd leave Southern Cal and venture into the NFL again. Stunner.

Rooney Rule. Yawn. They probably have a deal in place, and will do some going through the motions BS interview to satisfy the rule. They'll waste their own time and Coach Frazier's time, then announce the Carroll hire. |

Gray probally went to interview like he always does, JUST KIDDING!

Of course, the deal is in place and that's why Frazier is reconsidering doing the interview it's a waste of his time. I just stating of if it was announced officially tonight then they didn't satisfy the Rooney Rule. |

Man, Pete Carroll's second go around in the NFL...I am interested in how he does considering he was so mediocre on his first try.

it'll be his 3rd HC job |
re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
Mora did not deserve this. He is a good coach and will land on his feet somewhere. He did improve the team that he had by one game. If nothing else he should have had another year. As someone who wants to be a head coach I cannot believe that people don't realize that it takes time to build a winning team in your immage...especially at the NFL level.

whoops my bad...still he was pretty mediocre in his first two tries so I am still interested in how it turns out lol |

Not surprised at all that he's returning to the NFL. But I'm pretty surprised that it's for the same price we got Shanahan for. Shanahan 2 rings, Carroll 0 |

Baffling how Jim Mora got a second chance at head coach in the first place. Equally baffling is how he is 48 years old but looks like he's 28.

Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
Why would Pete Carroll leave USC to come back to the grind of the NFL? Just doesn't make sense to me.
Let me give you just a couple of reasons he might want to leave USC for the NFL: 1. The Reggie Bush investigation is still simmering. AND a judge just ruled against Carroll who argued that the NCAA investigators could not depose him - - that means interview him under oath. Now they can and such a deposition opens the POSSIBILITY that:
a. There was involvement in the Reggie Bush mess by a coach or coaches b. There was no knowledge or oversight from coaches which could lead to the NCAA's dreaded "lack of insitutional control" over improper behaviors.
2. The QB that he demoted to start Barkley all year has transferred from USC. He's gone and he ain't coming back. 3. Joe McKnight and his rogue SUV are also leaving USC for the NFL this year. The surprise to me is why the Seahawks are so interested in Carroll and why the Bears reportedly lusted after him Here is is NFL head coaching history: 1. He coached the Jets for 1 year. His team started out 6-4 and lost the final 6 games of the season. Hardly what you would call a rousing success... 2. He coached the Pats for 3 years. He took over the Pats' team that went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Packers. He did not take over a team full of stumblebums. Here is what his teams did:
Year 1: Won AFC East. Year 2: Made playoffs as a wild-card. Year 3: Missed playoffs.
Do you see a trend there that you find attractive? |

Yeah that kind of perked my ears as well. I still kind of wonder how we got Shanahan at only 7/year. Is it likely that there's more than base pay in there? Playoff bonuses? Small ownership stake? Something? |

This is just another typical example of of how teams skirt the rule and actually flaunt their lack of respect for it. We're going to interview Frazier just to satisfy the rule, but we're going to hire Carroll. Based on the way teams are circumventing that rule one has to wonder if it should not be revisited. That's a discussion for another day and time, good luck Pete Carroll. |

Or maybe Snyder is going to stop grossly overpaying people and start paying them what they are actually worth...naaah |
Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
At this point do you just pay the $200k and risk draft picks for future violations or do you find someone to do a token interview. I'm starting to get the feeling that while the Rooney rule worked to start with, pretty soon it's going to result in a backlash.

So they have just totally ignored the RR rule? And people think the Redskins made a mockery of it.

It's kind of the same as here.. they reached an agreement, Frazier is supposed to interview today... then after that Carroll can sign
So they have just totally ignored the RR rule? And people think the Redskins made a mockery of it.
That's what I was thinking. Besides, we didn't do anything that others hadn't already done. The fact that we did it in-season made it seem worse to some folks. The Rooney Rule is obviously not working as it should, though. Changes are needed. |
Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
The Rooney Rule is working exactly as it was intended. Clubs have to interview a minority candidate...that's it. What do you want an NFL team to have to hire a minority candidate? That is un American, you should be able to hire whoever you want to. They are already being told to interview candidates that wouldn't warrant serious consideration otherwise. I don't mind the rule, but don't say that it's not working just because these candidates rarely get chosen over more qualified peers.
|
Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
I kind of think the Rooney Rule is a joke. I mean, if a team already has a candidate in mind, they're just going to grab the closest black person they can, throw an interview at them and then hire the the other person.
What was wrong with the NFL before the Rooney Rule was instated anyway? |

What was wrong with the NFL before the Rooney Rule was instated anyway?
The NFL before the Rooney was GREAT, but by virtue of the low number (or non-existent) of black coaches in a pre-dominantly black sport....it was not as great for.....all. While I agree with you that if you have your guy already, you are probably are going to hire him. AND I believe you should be able to so. IN that scenario, I think it is ineffective for THAT position. I think it has some merit as at least you are gaining interview skills and hopefully your name is being passed around as a "possible" candidate. Sooo, the NEXT int...maybe you get a real shot. |
Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in
You figure coaches until recently were typically 20-40 years older than their players, so it makes sense that there were a lot more white head coaches. Even if you factor in a lot of black players in the 70s and on it takes awhile to come from playing to coaching... or whatever other coaching that they were doing at the time. I think that the number of black coaches we have now isn't really impacted by the rule, just the increase in available candidates. The number of black head coaches is quite higher than the actual demographics of the population, not as far as players, but not every player can be a coach, not every player wants to be a coach, not every coach was a player at a high level, etc
What else does Carrol have to prove in college? Might as well take the big payday and try to prove himself on the next level. If the Seahawks are able to bring in Carrol then canning Mora was a no-brainer.
I think the timing has more to with USC's possible probation from Bowl games coming up, from all of the alleged corruption in their recruiting/athletic department. If there's no big games in their foreseable future, what's the incentive for the coach to stay? Also, he wants to grab a lifeboat before the ship goes down. |
