"Dansby at the right price." What a laugh. FA come here because they get max contracts with fat signing bonuses. He's a really good football player but I'm sure he'd want elite money and I don't know how we could pay him and fill all the gaps at OL, RB, QB, LB, DB etc.

Not that I'm strongly advocating for Dansby but here's how you fill these gaps

OL: Draft Okung with the #4, and pick up a solid free agent at Guard (Kuper if he's unrestricted from Denver.

RB: Draft one in the 4th round (a la Tashard Choice), find two serviceable RBs from either our roster or free agency, run a three-headed RB monster.

QB: Keep Campbell, draft a 2nd rounder QB.

LB: That's a tough one, we may need to wait until the following year (if there's football). Dansby for the right price would help (keep in mind that we're in the post-Vinny era).

DB: You got me on that one, but then again we're not going to fill all of our areas of need just one year of draft and free agency.

Keep in mind that Vinny wanted to draft Jerod Mayo with our 21st pick, but the pats picked him so we traded for 2 second rounders getting fred davis, and devin thomas

The Fred Davis/Devin Thomas acquisition isn't looking so bad right now.

I like your ideas.

As far as FA goes, I think we should be conservative meaning we shouldn't throw record contracts to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Agents foam at the mouth around this time of year because they know Danny will pony up top dollar without hesitation to sign a marquee talent. We've done this year after year and the formula hasn't worked.

I guess we're going to see what happens with the uncapped year, how Bruce handles the cap and the boss and see what Shannahan wants to do personnel-wise.

the first time i heard vinny say he was targeting mayo was a year after the draft after mayo had won defensive rookie of the year. for whatver thats worth . . .

in the same interview i heard he said he didnt have any olineman rated as a 1st rounder and thats why he traded back from the 21st spot.

and he had thomas rated as a 1st round talent ala jacobs.

Mayo was definitely on the radar, though even if the Pats didn't take him at 11 it seemed doubtful he would have stuck around until 21.

As Redskins fans, we get so excited over the top free agents in the offseason. We all start ranting and raving, we should go after the big name, and normaly we get him. Then when he does not perform as billed, we start calling for Snyders head. With that said, I was thinking, if we signed Dansby to a long term deal and payed him some stupid amount of money to play up front and a reasonable amount after that, would that be salary cap safe? Such as pay him 40 million up front and four or five million a year after that. That would seem to me to work for future salry caps. Of course then we have another over payed player to rich to care about football.

I don't think teams will be allowed to front load deals like that

the 30% rule. in the uncapped 2010 year, you can only sign a guy for 30% more than he was making last year.

Not so sure about Dansby, we have much greater needs. I'm sure he would like to come to play for the Redskins, he's thinking about a pay check.

Re: Karlos Dansby anyone???? Interesting find...

Karlos would be exactly what we need to move to a 3-4 defense. He would be our strong side OLB and Orakpo and Fletcher would be ILB, and McIntosh would be weakside OLB. We could then trade for Carter for a third or forth round draft choice. We could then have a some comibation of Golston, Daniels, Montgomery, Alexander, and Jarmon at the DE and Haynesworth at NT. On passing downs you put Orakpo on the line and we have a monster front seven in my mind. This would make Haynesworth happy, i think, because he could rush the passer and Orakpo could rush the passer from all over. By the way, we can probably get rid of on or both of Daniels and Griffin.

I thought Orakpo would be best suited as a 3-4 OLB where he can rush the QB a la DeMarcus Ware/Terrell Suggs. And didn't Dansby played ILB for the Cardinals 3-4 defense?

I think it was through Redskin Insider but I knew on draft day that the Redskins were targeting Mayo and was subsequently bummed when the Patriots picked him. Good thing we got three pass catchers though.

Dansby would come in here and be a perfect fit for either defense, SLB in a 4-3. Or ILB for a 3-4. He's not that old too. If we stuck to a 4-3 than our LB's would be Dansby Fletcher McIntosh, with Orakpo at DE. If we got a 3-4 than our LB's would be Orakpo, Fletcher, Dansby, ????(draft pick, chris wilson, FA, or Rocky??)

I like this idea, Dansby and Fletcher in the middle would be a good combination. Orakpo would definitely be on the outside, I am not sure if Rocky is a good OLB in the 3-4, but if it works then that's your LB corps right there.

McIntosh plays in long yardage situations in all fronts (anything 8+ that's not first and ten). Heavy use of nickel packages where Carter and Orakpo are the ends, and Blades and Fletcher are the backers.
Hmmm. If Rocky bulks up a bit more I see him as a better ILB in the 3-4 than Blades. But the main thing is Dansby doesn't really help us that much unless London is one a year from retirement and the new regime doesn't see starter material in Blades.

But the new regime may want Dansby, plus IF the defense we run this year is a Hybrid 3-4 / 4-3, then we could/should definitley get Dansby because he's a 4-3 SLB, and a 3-4 ILB, kill two birds with one stone. Oh yeah and he's 28 years old, so he's not nearly as old as guys like bruce smith, deion sanders, jason taylor, etc that we have brought in from the past as FA's.

Yeah man I don't mean to say Dansby would be a bad move. He's an upgrade over Rocky. My thinking is he's not a huge upgrade and we've got serious needs elsewhere. Realistically we get just 2 starters from the draft (I hope starting book-end tackles) and maybe a third in a gem RB Shanny develops. All the other needs then have to be addressed in FA.

...personally I think FS is a far greater need than LB this off-season. Landry makes a terrible last line of defense and I doubt Moore can be that guy right now. Some think Berry might fall to us so I guess that would/could fix the FS issue; however I still think a franchise LT is a better value @ 4.

...and if Haslett really does go to a 3-4 regularly we have to make changes on the DL. Basically nothing fits based on the current roster unless we get lucky w/ some guys developing fast. Big Monty hasn't shown shit to be a dominant nose tackle. Unless Jarmon or Lorenzo becomes a stud overnight we don't have a LDE in the 3-4. Finally who knows how Phat Al will respond to a new scheme. I never saw the wisdom in going 3-4 because it potentially requires a lot of roster changes to the defense, when our offense is one of the weakest in the league and needs an infusion of talent regardless of scheme. Shanny/Allen's moves on Haslett and the defense have me worried.

Everyone always says they're interested in the Redskins. It's well known that agents often encourage their players to say it to raise their potential value.

But I believe the Redskins are interested, strongly interested, in Dansby this year and Dansby is actually a bit interested in the Redskins.

Don't have anything to base this on really, but I can see Dansby in B&G

With the team's history of doling out ridiculous contracts, who wouldn't be interested in coming here? :)

Wasn't it L.Coles that said he came to Washington to "get paid?"
Cardinals will not place franchise tag on Karlos Dansby, according to team source

The Cardinals are prepared to let linebacker Karlos Dansby test the open market in free agency this year and will not place the franchise tag on him for a third consecutive season, a team source confirmed Thursday.

That does not, however, mean Dansby's days with the franchise are over. The Cardinals will monitor the situation when free-agent offers are allowed to be made and then decide then if they wish to make an offer of their own.

The team appears to be gambling that Dansby won't command as much as a free agent as he would as a franchise player, which could be as much as $16 million guaranteed. If we go 3-4, Jarmon may have to switch to OLB.

Dansby regularly has led the Cardinals in tackles, but this past season produced only one sack, one interception and one forced fumble
.

In a 51-45 wild-card playoff victory over the Packers, however, Dansby was a force. He deflected a pass that led to an interception, caused a fumble and recovered and returned another fumble for the winning score.

Dansby, a second-round draft pick
by the Cardinals in 2004, is said to be eyeing a contract that guarantees him around $30 million. Teams that have been linked to possibly having interest in him and vice versa include the Dolphins, Giants and Colts.

Dansby, who was unavailable for comment, has said on numerous occasions he wouldn't rule out re-signing with the Cardinals.

The Cardinals also are continuing negotiations with coach Ken Whisenhunt concerning a contract extension, although no new information was available Thursday.
$30 million? Maybe not, but he WOULD help the LB position tremendously and allow us to use another draft pick on the O-line since LB would be covered through FA.

Oh no, nothing like that. Smootsmack had been lobbying for Smith for a year or two before he became a free agent. Then the 49ers swooped in and offered him a deal. Smootsmack felt so bad and depressed that he only banned 8 people that day.

Justin smith is making a lot of money (in the third year of a 6yr/45 Mil deal with 20 mil guaranteed) and could be a cap-casualty. Aaron Smith,33, has 2 years left on a 5 yr/25 mil deal but he could too the way the Steeler cycle defensive players in an out from year to year. He plays DE in a 3-4.
