Yeah there's never really a good excuse for tossing a teammate under the bus in the media. Truth or not, you keep that stuff in-house. It does no good to air your dirty laundry in public.

Re: Portis staying?

First thing's first, I just started on Warpath so trust me, Sellers isn't JUST NOW becoming a problem in MY book. Did his fumbles cost many games? Yes. Has he ever been that guy to punch it in the endzone? No. Fourth and inches alstot/ bettis type? No. THe man is a beast, don't get me wrong, but you can't do that mess and win. You just can't! You can't count the fumbles yesterday and blame Favre ALONE for the loss, but yes, his mistake was the most costly. Well, sellers does both. There was a time when he was one of the best lead blockers in the league... not anymore. Period

As for if Shanahan's offense, no it's not an "Any back will do" offense. Look at the ones that succeeded in his offense. The fact is that they picked good ones. If Shanahan finds the next big back, then sweet! But if the next kid isn't better than CP then i'll be pissed. Every 3 yard Betts run would've been 7 if it was CP. Now, for Portis, the workhorse, to be put into a familiar system on which he once thrived... I don't know about you, but i see endzone cartwheels in our near future.

Just seems a little odd that you're calling Sellers a problem yet you seem to give CP a pass on just about everything.

Re: What Problem with Portis?

Portis is the MAIN one that has the right to comlain. People got on Haynesworth too. That's my dog! THe man shoved two 300+ pound guys backward play after play, yet people whined that he took too many breathers. He singlehandedly changed the runningstyles of every team we played! Look ath how dallas treated us without him! They ran up the gut and dared us to stop them. whenever one of our guys was getting roughed up, Big Al came rushin' in like "WHAT! BACK UP FOOL!" and swingin! He's the man! Was he happy about the system? No. Did he keep quite about it? Heck yeah! Game after excruciating game! He didn't say a thing till the season was almost over. Then when he couldn't take it anymore, he politely stated that he wasn't used to the fullest. Orakpo wasnt either. Now, Portis is in the same spot, only on offense! Portis and Moss are the only game changers we got on offense. Cooley, yeah, but only when we're in a rhythm. If the line trashed portis, they would be lying. He isn't missing holes, he isn't tripping any more or less than any other back, he isn't going at half speed, and he isn't giving less than his all! The man has a strong personality, but to put him in the same category as T.O. is a bit much. Besides, once again, HE WAS TELLING THE TRUTH!

If Portis can accept the role change that he is no longer the number 1 back, things could work out. Our issue is we have 3 aging back and 1 aging full back that last year did not get the job done.

Don't get me wrong, trashing a player on your team is not 'nice'. i just think it's not an unpardonable sin. I would much rather hear that cooley quote abaout how Campbell needs "bigger balls", than hear him pretend there is no issue. It's not like he does it all the time. It's not like it COSTS us any GAMES. Besides, sometimes calling people out makes them step up. Ask Rich Gannon how he took the Raiders to the SuperBowl. If the line doesn't like it, then they need to step up. If Sellers doesnt like it, then he needs to do his job right. Once they do... THEN you can properly evaluate Portis. People compare Jason to the best and call him crap instead of the 20 starters he's either as good as or getter dispite have been sacked twice as much and hit 4 times as much.

The difference is if you're one of those guys who are giving 100% by going to practice, keeping yourself in shape, attending OTA's and being there with your teamates learning and practicing that weeks gameplan, then yeah, you have a right to speak out about people who AREN'T doing those things. Portis was not one of those guys.

Re: Portis staying?

My concern is not whether Portis stays or goes but that 2 things happen:
1) Every player from Portis to Campbell to the 7th round draft pick in this years draft understands that if you practice hard, play within the scheme, and give everything you have, the coaching staff will give you every opportunity to earn a roster spot.

2) If you don't or you won't, they won't.

From there, lets see what type of TEAM we can field regardless of any individual player can or cannot do.

Re: Portis staying?

And when we here think back to Portis, unfortunatley his actions are irredeemable. his once decent play has been overshadowed by his lack of conditioning, and motivation. His attacks on the players, and coaches has no excuse. He reminds me of Jamarcus Russel, honestly. A guy who once had all the talent in the world but now doesnt care enough to get out of his own way...we will be better off without him....

I think the whole offense need's to step up. Maybe Shannahan can get this team in line. There wasn't a player last year on the offensive side of the ball that gave 100%

#1- Besides Buges offensively I think we had some shitty coach's. Blame Seller's for his piss poor blocking, but you might as well blame Portis for his piss poor blocking also. Portis whiffed on a few also. Honestly, under Zorn was the first time this team has sniffed playing in a WCO. If you don't have good coaching in order to teach the scheme and blocking assignments then guess who looks bad? Player not coach. Sellers was good in Gibbs system.

#2- You ask if Sellers was ever known for puching the ball into the endzone? Yes he has been in the past. Part of our problem though is the Skins love to use the bunch play and try to power the ball in the endzone. If other teams know it was going to be a run like most of us fans then all they did was jam up the line and stop Sellers. Portis had trouble also. Betts had trouble also. My family thought I was crazy yelling at the tv asking why they weren't spreading out the defense with WR's and running the ball in? Dallas and the Giants were good at doing this.

#3- I don't know how many times Sellers fumbled. I don't care to look. Yes he had dropped passes, but look who was throwing to him, look at all the issues.
A- Campbell didn't have time to throw.
B- Campbell threw horribly to all his receivers.
C- Campbell either over threw or under threw or threw behind/late.
D- A lot of receivers dropped passes. So I guess they are the issue also.

#4- Please don't say Portis would get more yards over Betts. Although they are similar in size and some say style I see two different runners. Portis is the type to take the ball, sit back and wait for the play to develope. He waits for his blockers. Sometimes losing yards. If he is required to hit the hole hard and fast, he stutter steps it and tries to tip toe through. In years past he would hit it hard but the last two he has tip toed. Betts has come in and been better at simply taking the ball and hammering it through the line.

Now don't get me wrong.... I like Portis better then Betts and Rock. To me Rock is worthless. Some people here seem to value his being a "Captian" more then me. I value his production, which besides KR he hasn't produced anything. I like Betts but when you have someone better you use them. Which is why Portis is #1. All 3 are up there in age and we have no replacements in the wings learning or waiting to take over. If Portis can get his act together then pay him off what was promised to him and re-sign him to a more reasonable contract and bring in someone new to learn. I think we have it in Ganther though.

I'm not a fan favorite of Sellers either but don't single out one player. Sellers is getting old also which is why they picked up a FB in the draft last yr. Hopefully the Rookie's injury will be healed and he can produce better then what we have had.

In the long run the team has to weigh his value vs. production. In a Shanahan system RB's were a dime a dozen.
Shanahan’s offense is the perfect offense. There are just so many things to love about the design and the playcalling that, when you think about how shoddy the majority of the talent is on that side of the ball, it’s shocking that they’re that effective. Denver’s best offensive linemen was a rookie and a guy who was on MTV’s True Life. Their best receivers were an afterthought who had no business slipping in the draft and an undrafted free agent. They went through SEVEN running backs, and not one of them was anything you couldn’t pick up on the free agent wire, hell, even a college FULLBACK in Peyton Hillis looked like a budding all-pro. The scheme is far more important than the players and Shanahan got every last ounce of production from everyone on that side of the ball, including Tatum Bell who is one of the more massive wastes of humanity known to man.
So, what makes Shanahan’s offense so effective that anyone can run it? First off, the blocking scheme is pure brilliance and rather than taking chances and having guys who can physically manhandle opposing linemen, Shanahan wants leaner, quicker guys who can move. It’s not about beating the other guy, it’s about getting in the way and creating a path. When one lineman does this, it’s pretty ineffective, but when you have five guys moving in unison creating a giant, moving wall, it’s almost impossible to totally stop. It absolutely wreaks havoc against the 3-4 and really could care less about whatever other formations you run because you’re not blocking a person, you’re blocking a spot. It’s reason no. 1 through eleventy billion why Denver can use any RB and that guy will look good. The cutback lanes are ALWAYS there and it’s almost impossible for a running back to fuck up in this system unless you sign as a free agent and have a problem not impregnating women…ahem…Travis Henry…ahem.
Yeah. Good thing Favre precticed and worked out with the eam ever since the begining of training camp to build the necessary co... wait... oh, he didn't? My bad. I thought ALL the great ones did.

Also, it's not like Portis missed a ton of practices. You're making a mountain out of a mole hill. I do believe in cohesion and time in the trenches together to build a bond. You're way off base on Favre. Mr. Favre did indeed practice with his team-mates...he played in the preseason...2 things Portis refuses to do. Dude you obviously don't even watch the NFL. This is crazy some of your statements..Do you seriously think that Brett didn't practice in Minnesota? It was on TV the 2nd day he was there...he was in a jersey out there throwing with the receivers....where do you get this stuff?

second statement: "CP didn't miss that many practices"....do you not consider "ALL" to be that many? The man didnt work out at all or practice not even once!! Jesus Christ man get real...And playing better hurt than 80% of the starters in the league?? You're on some bad shit dude. Portis played like garbage before he was injured...and now you're saying even hurt he played better than guys like Peterson, Chris Johnson, Shonn Green....seriously man your posts are messed up

Favre also doesn't talk trash about his teamates and takes responsibility for his own mistakes. You're obviously a big fan of Portis... moreso than his own teamates it appears. Live in that world if you want to. Comparing Portis to Favre is a joke. Favre doesn't miss games injured or not. But far be it from me to try to break up true romance. Whatever man.

Re: Portis staying?

Did XBSVII say that portis is a piss poor blocker!?!?! You have just lost a lot of points man. Portis is one of the best passblockers in the league! Madden has said that like a thousand times! And "Crybaby Portis" has more 100+ yard games playing HURT than all the 100 yard games of all of our other runningbacks right now. so hush

BETTS RUNS IN A STRAIGHT LINE! The reason that i said that for every 3 or 4 yard run Betts has, CP would've gotten 6 or 8 is that Betts has no change of direction and doesn't shed tacklers. He makes a good quick first directional decision, "Oh, there's the hole. I'll go that way." and that's it. Once he passes the los, there is no razzle dazzle, to shedding, breaking ankles, creating a big run play. If they creat the perfect aisle that ANY back can run through, he will and may score, but Portis will make more even if it isn't there... and with our line, it never is.
I don't mean to single out Sellers, but this is a team. This is a portis blog. People are throwing HIM under the bus as if he isn't one of the best out there. People are saying things like "He lost a step" which, though true, means little since so has a lot of people whoa re still monsters. Ray lewis is still a beast, but yeah, he lost a few. Favrecan still tern a good team to a great team and he obviously lost a step. People said CP was losing it after over 1400 yards behind a battered, mix and match, p.o.s. line and I'm here to say, back up and look at the whole picture. With no o-line, sellers job is even more important. He's giving the last hope of any help in a crappy run play that probably shouldn't have been called by a coach that shouldn't have been a head coach.

AND ANOTHER THING
Look at the stats yesterday in the colts game. See Reggie wayne? That's Santana any given sunday. Beat-up, double teamed, and fighting for every inch he gets. Now look at the OTHER receivers. THEY STEPPED UP! THe biggest play was an OFF TARGET PASS BY PEYTON MANNING!!! A receiver that ISN'T the number one guy had to turn in a really awkward angle and make a weird catch... AND HE DID IT! Nobody said, "Peyton should've placed it here, not there" with swiggly lines on the screen. they said "FIRST DOWN! AMAZING CATCH!!! Now when Jason made that 80 or so yard play in the last game, if it was dropped, it would go down as just another bad pass. Screw that! Randel el, Thomas, and Kelly are getting paid MILLIONS to make catches in the crunch and they aren't. PERIOD!

Re: Portis staying?

Its like your living in a time portal. You are describing stuff Portis did 6 years ago...and you still talk about Santana like he is a true #1 receiver.

I'm done with this thread. Your ideas, while humorous, are utterly ridiculous. You made it sound like Portis was going out there every game this season and getting 150 yards..."razzle dazzle and shedding tackles" blah blah blah. Thats complete bullshit. You are watching a madden simulation obviously, because this season told a different story. Anybody on this site will back me on that. Portis could barely move this season. Every single back ran better than he did...the injury was the best thing that could ever happen to him, it gave our running game a chance to finally work...which it did until Betts got hurt.

And you are crazy comparing Moss to Reggie Wayne....no way. I dont know how you can say these things....its clear that you might be seeking attention, which you are getting plenty of in this thread. I dont think you are a troll, but these portis comments aren't helping your case any....

Metal Gear is CRAZY! Favre practice in the offseason with a HIGHSCHOOL!!!!! He didn't touch a viking locker room till preseason and Portis did NOT refuse to. When you have a portis, LT, or Westbrook for a HB, you don't rist him in the preseason. If you think the head coach lets the player decide when they play, you're pretty slow. I don't see you complaining about MOSS riding pine all preseason. You don't risk established and proven players on preseason. WHat's the point?

We're pissing in the wind Snake. If the guy wants to think Portis is the best thing since sliced bread so be it. Some guys thought Marcus Mason was going to be our saviour remember? Some of these posts are pretty funny actually. Funny as I'm writing this they were talking about what Kyle Shanahan thinks of Portis on ESPN. He said he thinks Portis still has some value if he can regain his hunger and edge that he had earlier in his career. They commented that because of his disruption in the locker room he may be let go but he won't be until they have someone to replace him.

Look at what i bolded and go slow. Jim Zorn, while he was here, absolutley could have pushed portis to practice and attend OTA's and stuff, but he didnt, because of Portis' butt-buddy relationship with DS. Zorn knew if Portis complained to Snyder, he would get his way.

The Head Coach decides when a player plays, and when he practices. What has hurt us for so many years is that up until the arrival of Shanahan, we didn't have that rule. Even Joe Gibbs let Portis get away with too much.

I'm with 53Fan....this guy probably has CP underwear and we are wasting our time trying to present to him facts. Facts that everyone else on this board appears to know but him....What's next, is he gonna say that Kyle Shanahan doesnt know what he's talking about??? this is nuts

I never said portis is perfect, but the only hb that could bust 150+ with our line is retired, let me give Barry Sanders a call and see if we can suit him up for next year.

Also, I wasn't comparing moss to Reggie Wayne. My point was Reggie Wayne had crappy stats yesterday because he was double and tripple covered all game like they do Moss all the time. they didn't win on Reggie Wayne's shoulders, but on the number 2 and 3 receivers and BOTH tightends. You arn't paying attention at all. You heard "Moss is as good as Reggie Wayne" when i was saying Garcon and the rookie Collie did what Randal el and Thomas didn't do... STEP UP!

Beniel,

#1 it is a Portis thread so why did bring up Sellers bashing his blocking abilities?

#2 Your right Betts does run in a straight line. Plus he runs people over. Trucks them.

#3 I know Portis is one of the best blockers, but had you read my whole statement you would have also learned I said basically our system sucked. The coach's could coach. These last 2 years under Zorn, Portis has not been himself. He too has whiffed on blocks letting JC get hammered.

I also am not the one with the vasoline in hand. If we can retain Portis with out the high cost and Shanahan can reign him back in then mouth wise, practice wise, preseason wise, then I'm for keeping him for a few more years. I just doubt it happens. I thought I heard word that Shanahan was tired of Portis's antics while up in Denver which is why they wanted to trade him also. I doubt Shanahan will be playing games with the players.

I thought I heard word that Shanahan was tired of Portis's antics while up in Denver which is why they wanted to trade him also. I doubt Shanahan will be playing games with the players.
I think that's a pretty solid statement.

Re: Portis staying?

If Portis was such a savior over there, Shanahan and Denver would have never shipped his sorry ass over here. They were probably laughing because we were the new fools to be diagnosed with the Cancer that is CP.

Shanahan has been this road with him once before. I suspect it will go the same way...I say trade him for whatever you can get for him at this point. I'm thinking maybe a 3rd round pick that could become a 2nd rounder if certain conditions are met.
Did XBSVII say that portis is a piss poor blocker!?!?! You have just lost a lot of points man. Portis is one of the best passblockers in the league! Madden has said that like a thousand times!
Portis WAS one of the best RBs at pass-pro, just like Madden WAS an announcer/analyst.

The other guys have addressed your ramblings pretty well, but just some more stuff for you (read the parts on Portis):

From the Chiefs game:
Stuff That Sucks
- Portis' fumble
- Portis loss of lateral quickness and explosiveness. Unfortunately this was made crystal clear on two plays:
1) Our second to last possession of the 1st half. 2 & 6, the pitch to Portis running left. The Safety closed in run support to Portis' outside, rather than attempt to beat the S to the sideline, Portis cutback inside for a gain of 1. Not only was this a bad decision, but it's an indication Portis knows he's lost his quickness. Portis from a couple of years ago would've outrun the S to the sideline and picked up 4 or 5 yards, no problem.
2) Last possession before the Safety, swing pass to Portis in the right flat. He's in the open field against a LB and can't make a move to get by the LB to pick up a few yards. Most backs will make this play, the bigger backs would run over the LB. Portis is stopped for a 2 yard gain.

Portis' best days are in the rear view. He is simply a downhill, between the tackles runner, who isn't very big or very physical. Not a good recipe for a starting NFL RB....in the NFC East, no less. Portis' efforts for the Skins should be appreciated, he ran hard and had some good years here. But it's time to move on.

And how many times this year did we see Portis trip over his own feet and fall down either before contact or at the slightest contact. C'mon man, you've got to be yanking our chains with this Portis bro-mance.

Lately it seems anytime there's a CP thread, there's always one staunch supporter in the crowd that thinks he can do no wrong. Kinda weird.

It's Portis or one of his family members. We all know, "he don't make no mistakes!"

It is really weird...but this is the worst case of it that i've seen. I really believe like Sammy said...he is having fun at our expense....some of the crap he said was ridiculous!! LOL at "Razzle Dazzle and shedding tackles this season"....wow

I don't think they have to worry about that, he's already had an accomplished career regardless of what happens the rest of the way. It's just odd how adamant some are in his support, granted his strong supporters seem to be few and far between.

Agreed that Portis can't carry a running game anymore. Still, we're paying him $6 million for next year, might as well keep him for the stuff that he still can do well. If he declines in that, there's no reason to have him on the roster in 2011.

Re: Portis staying?

I will say i've noticed that the last little bit of people who supported him went the way of the dodo after he blasted Campbell for his "work habits" LOL at that.

There is a reason he is described by fellow redskins as "the worst team mate ever"

Either way it's too much, I'd rather spend the $$$ on solid FA O-Lineman and the rest on a FA RB or rookie RB.

And what happens guys when after a few games its the same old song and dance provided he is still taking up a roster spot by then??
