Not that I think we should pick him up, but how is picking up Pierce for the vet min any different than picking up some camp scrub?
I'd wager that AP is better than HB Blades even with the health issues.

As far as the vet. min, I'm not sure he'd get a big offer even in an uncapped year due to his questionable health issues. He said he wants to stay in the division (like B.Mitch) so why not give him a shot. If it works out, great. If it doesn't then we'll do what we gotta do.

We need to get younger, especially at LB and I don't think signing AP would hinder that draft strategy.

Good call actually. I've heard the LB is a big priority for them this offseason.

Also, according to Pierce, his neck has healed to 100%. He said the results of MRI he just had on the neck were "perfect."

With the cap no longer an issue, don't even bother talking about salary. It's a non-factor. He'd be an upgrade over what we have on the bench.

As long as we're heading towards uncapped seasons, this makes perfect sense to me.

Injuries had quite a bit to do with it, though not the only factor.

As did age, lack of speed................and I will say his stupidness for not showing better judgment in the Plax incident, you know the Giants didn't forget that .
Non-football comment:

My son, 12 and a NYG fan :(, and I went to NYC for his 10th Bday. He wanted a jersey so bad, I got him Pierce because of his Redskins ties. He and I went to the Fedex MNF game this year with him wearing it. So this is a bummer to me, because of that kinda weird bonding thing that happens there.

On the football side,
If Pierce came back and had the same grudge toward the Giants as he did to us, I would be ok with it. But it's not gonna make or break my off-season glee.
How in the hell did that happen? You won't be getting Warpath's father of the year award :smashfrea

I'd be interested in who said no because of the neck said they wouldn't mind Samuels returning.

Re: Giants Release Pierce

Well Samuels and Pierce don't have the same injuries, you would have to judge both on their own.

Per ESPN Insider:
Joyner: Pierce could play in 3-4

Antonio Pierce | Giants | Interested: Rams?, Dolphins? Top Email

During the New York Giants' season-ending news conference, GM Jerry Reese did not seem too enthusiastic about Antonio Pierce's prospects moving forward. On Thursday, the expected decision became official: the Newark Star-Ledger reported that the team released Pierce, confirmed via email from the veteran LB to beat writer Mike Garafolo.

Jonathan Goff will certainly be in the mix to start next season for the Giants, but Karlos Dansby could be an option, and the team will also scout collegiate options quite extensively prior to the draft.

What about the market for Pierce? His agent Drew Rosenhaus tweeted on Thursday with the kind of optimism we've come to expect: "Antonio Pierce is a free agent and there is great interest in signing him now that he's healthy. His back has improved and he's ready to go!" If he can prove that his injury troubles are truly behind him (or at least being managed), we could see the Vikings take a look, given their own uncertain future at MLB after the injury to E.J. Henderson. If Pierce can convert to a 3-4 ILB, there might be a job for him with the Pats (Albert Breer of the Boston Globe notes the issues with that), Cowboys or Dolphins, too. Beat writer Armando Salguero tweeted on Thursday afternoon that Pierce could be a fit for the team's "Acorn" position. As the speculation continues, NFC East blogger Matt Mosley thinks perhaps a reunion with his old defensive coordinator will take place and he could end up with the Rams.

We asked the Football Scientist KC Joyner how well Pierce would adjust to being an ILB in a 3-4 defensive scheme, and here's his take:

KC Joyner
Pierce could be the "finisher"
"Pierce might be a good fit in a 3-4 if he were put into the right role. 3-4 fronts usually have one LB who pursues running plays and attempts to funnel things back to the other inside LB to make the tackle. Pierce may not have the requisite speed to fill the pursuit role but he does have solid tackling skills that make him a good fit for the finisher role."
Re: Giants Release Pierce

We already have an older MLB and do not need another one. If HB is not the heir apparent to London, then we need to find a younger project player in the later rounds of the draft to groom behind him. Pierce doesn't have a place here.

Free agent LB Antonio Pierce says he would prefer his next team to be in the NFC East.
He could give the Eagles a two-down thumper and perhaps allow Stewart Bradley to move to the strong side (Bradley's college position). Pierce could also be of use in Washington if the Skins install a 3-4. Still, no team is going to offer the injured 30-year-old more than a one-year, incentive-laden deal

Yeah that was kind of the point, Samuels' is degenerative and some guys are saying let's see about bringing him back. Pierce's is more of an alignment issue.

In Pierce's world, Washington would be labeled as "auto-exclude". I suspect he wants to win one with the star on his helmet just to spite the 'Skins.

So people don't want Pierce because he's too old (and people for some reason believe we're going to break the bank for him), they don't want Dansby because he'll cost too much money. So any other ideas for getting a decent ILB that doesn't include giving up picks on a trade (for RFAs, which I'm sure someone will bring one up) or using our #4 pick on a defensive player?

you bring in larry foote on a short deal (1-2 years) to teach the defense to our pro's and since he knows Lou Spanos from Pittsburgh. With our second round pick, if theres a LB like Spikes or Jerry Hughes who fit the 3-4 perfectly, and there aren't any OLineman(which I highly, highly doubt, there will most likely be a few guards and tackles and center worth of our second) then you get one of those guys.

do you ever say anything positive about the redskins? the skins made a similar offer to Pierce that he accepted from NY. its called a business decision. HE choose the Giants. but to rant and rave about how classless the skins are is utter nonsense. hopefully he can use his ring to fix his body. because he is done in this league. im sure if he could still play, he would have no problem taking the skins money

quit kidding your self. if this were the Pierce of 3-4 years he would still be with them. his diminished skills are the single biggest reason he got cut

Re: Giants Release Pierce
Well that's just silly, because that's basically saying we have 6 linebackers on our roster who are better than Antonio Pierce. It's just not true.

With the cap no longer an issue, don't even bother talking about salary. It's a non-factor. He'd be an upgrade over what we have on the bench.

But he shouldn't unseat Fletcher, he would have to earn a starting spot if he even can, and he shouldn't be counted on for very much.
Actually it is not that far of a reach to say we have 6 LBs on the roster better than Peirce, in terms of upside anyway . Peirce has lost a step but is a sure tackler .

If we moved to a 3-4 alignment then possibly you are right but then I think I would actually like to bring in a LB with a history at the position .

Staying with the 4-3 then we have Rak (should be a 3-4 LB) Fletcher and Rocky . I would not displace any of those for peirce . Then you have Blades Wilson and Bowen ....

Wilson has shown he has value in the 4-3 as a pass rush specialist and is developing as a OLB, all he did in his opportunities last season was make plays .

Blades has shown he is at least a valuable back up and has done more in his first three years than Peirce did in his first three years . The other aspect is that Blades will only get better with more playing time . Peirce is on the down slope .

Bowen... well I know very little about him but he backs up Rocky Mac and I really don't think Peirce would want to come back to back up WLB ...

Re: Giants Release Pierce

now, of any of the FA talk out there, I would definately take Pierce back. He is only 31, has a few very productive years left and if we switch to the 3-4 defense, the pairing of Fletch and Pierce would look a lot better than Rocky playing on the inside. that would allow Orakpo and Rocky to play the outside, and allow Carter to play both down and standing up in certain situations, and hell even put hayensworth on the end sometimes.

Re: Giants Release Pierce

I would love to see Pierce back. Maybe he'll get healthy & have a comeback year. Don't forget that he started out playing OLB. He could possibly be used much like Blades is now; a little at MLB (or ILB if 3-4), and some SAM.

Unless we draft McClain at #4, I would be surprised if we go LB in the early rounds. Pierce could likely win a job here if we don't draft any LBs early.

McClain apparently isnt as high in the minds of NFL execs as I would have thought. I've heard the name Koa Misi attached to the Redskins, but I agree with you. I don't think they take a LB in the first couple of rounds. Unless someone like McClain or Spikes drops to round 2.

I hope they draft him, Koa is a playmaker from Utah. That guy is all over the field and making big plays.
