Another question though, where would this leave Andre Carter? Dude had 12 sacks last year. I can't see him playing as a down lineman in a 3-4, he needs to stay on the edge with the OLBs.
It leaves AC to be traded for picks I suppose. |

re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
considering the salary cap will come back next year, i dont see how we could have all those guys on the roster, in addition to haynesworth, the #4 overall pick in the draft, and whatever other big contract guys we have on the roster. with a salary cap, you can only afford to have a couple big contracts on the team. otherwise, you end up with a roster that has 4 or 5 complete studs and 50 guys who barely qualify to play in the league. id rather have 1 or two studs and 50 good NFL players. While thats an exaggerated example, you get the point. and that doesnt even begin to address the chemistry problems on the team when you're giving Peppers a "100 million dollar contract" and he's not even trying, while guys making the league minimum are playing their guts out.
I won't be sold on the idea of adding Peppers for reasons already expressed, but a salry cap is somethng that's going to be key in negotiations because many feel it could be gone forever. That's the one key fear, if a season is played without a cap, fear is it won't return again. |

That was my feeling as well. He's certainly the best player on our roster to play NT, but I don't see him really giving it his all. the potential for having two older "100 million dollar players" in our front 7 not giving their all cant bode well for us. And to be honest, for the money we're paying him, i'd rather him do more than just eat up blockers. right or wrong, i think we'd get more production out of Hanesworth at DE. |

i think the fear that the salary cap won't come back is greatly exaggerated. its a scare tactic in my opinion. right now, it makes sense for teams to not have a cap, as a lot of them want to unload dead weight. however, having a salary cap and salary floor is far too beneficial for the league and the players. i would be shocked if the cap didnt return whenever a new CBA is reached. |

It's a realistic fear, but if there's a lockout, the easiest way to break it is to sign an extension of the last CBA, though it might not legally be an "extension." So, I think the cap has a great chance to come back since it's been agreed to before. I do think there's going to be something that totally catches everyone off guard during negotiations. It could be a totally new CBA, or some form of exemption for teams to allow them to keep players they aren't able to now. Don't know what it will be, but I see some other form of change rather than the cap being eliminated. |

Haynesworth has never been afraid to voice his opinion. I am sure he would answer that question if asked. I think Haynesworth's criticism of Blache had more to do with the losing than him just being a bad apple. I don't think he would have said anything if they had been winning. I understand a player being upset if a player feels they are being misused and could make more of an impact if used differently. |
Is Orakpo at LB really a bad idea? I thought he made a pretty good transition and should only be better in year 2, and he's definitely a better fit for LB in the 3-4.
Orakpo is much better with his hand in the dirt than in a 2 point. When you're getting beat by Witten it's one thing, Jeff King is another. He will be better as a 3-4 OLB than in a 4-3 (easier to expose him in coverage in a 4-3), but he's most effective as a true RDE.
Don't get me wrong, Orakpo will do well at LB or DE, I'm just for maximizing the potential of each player. |

re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
I'm still trying to figure out why Haynesworth at NT is a bad idea. It's not like he would be locked in at NT full time either, I'm sure he would work in at DE as well.
He's not built as a 3-4 NT. He doesn't have that low center of gravity like a Wilfork, Hampton, Jamal Williams, etc. It will be easier for opposing Gs to get into his hips and thighs. AH is a 1 tech DT, yes he gets doubled, but he knows where it's coming from. A 3-4 NT has to play basically a 2 gap technique and just swallow up blockers for the LBs. AH will not be happy (motivated) or effective in that role. As a 3-4 DE he'll know where the double is coming from and he'll have more of a chance to make plays on his own.
Orakpo at RDE and AH at the 1 is as good as it gets in the NFL for a right side of the DL. It ain't broke, why fix it. I keep hearing about how successful the 3-4 has been, the Eagles and Giants have done some pretty good things over the last few years with their attacking 4-3. Looking at the top D rankings over the last 3 years, there's a mix of teams running 3-4 vs. 4-3. |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
i agree. i think shanahan's decision to use a 3-4 defense is motivated more by novelty than necessity.
|
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
Hmm, I think Kedric Golston and Monty are on their way out. I don't know if Peppers is going to be an OLB or 3-4 DE.

We still need LB help in a 4-3 or 3-4, just in a 3-4, you need more LB help. If we go to a 3-4 base we're going to need to retool the DL, why do this when we need to retool the OL, QB & RB? Change for the sake of change is usually not a good thing.

Getting rid of Golston would be a mistake. |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
im going to trust that allen and shanny are well aware of peppers reputation for taking plays and games off, not having a drive for football, etc when they are determining whether to enter the peppers sweepstakes.
imo peppers probably took plays off b/c of the franchise tag and that he just doesnt live and breath football. for those reasons i wouldnt even consider him but maybe allen can structure an incentive based contract with "out clauses" for the skins if peppers gets here and continues what he did in carolina. i dont want guys who dont live breath and love football, no matter how well they did when they first got into the league. |

You could be right, but any bonuses paid out this year in the uncapped year would not count towards a 2011 salary cap (if there is one). Unless they came up with a new rule during negotiations that does not exist today. |

Well put. I couldn't agree more. However, reality seems to be different. I think we (at least I) need to learn to live with the transition, whether we agree with it or not. |

Everytime I think about Haynesworth, I picture him on his back, huffing and puffing like a cheap drunken tart. :goodjob: |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
A few thoughts:
So the redskins are interested in: Darren Sproles Julius Peppers Karlos Dansby has the Skins on his 4 team wish list So does Chester Taylor Sounds like Shanahan wouldn't mind having LT here as well We should be going after a corner like Dunta Robinson, a receiver like Kevin walter who knows this offense, a few free agent lineman that know this offense (Pitts, Hamilton) and one that likes the OL coach (pashos) Sounds like a big free agent offseason again for us. Orakpo at OLB in a 3-4 is a perfect fit for us NOT OLB in a 4-3 Haynesworth should be a DE in a 3-4, not a NT, thats where we should draft one or get anthony montgomery as our new NT. |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
Getting rid of Golston would be a mistake.
I was thinking the same thing. Those guys are actually worth the money we pay them. |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
We already have Peppers. His name on our team is Andre Carter. Poop on this idea.
|
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
On another note...the thought of Alexander playing OLB for us makes me smile. If that guy can pull that off I might think him my favorite Redskin. Maybe ever. A guy who can play OL, DL, LB and be a pretty damn good Special teamer is basically unheard of in the modern NFL.

re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
Might as well get excited about it. No point in bitching at this point, especially with the salary cap practically in a vegetative state at this point.
haynesworth is not going to be happy having to play nt. i think he would be sick as a de in a 3-4, maybe picking up mount cody at the top of round 2 to fill the nt spot. and im not convinced about peppers.
He's not going to happy playing the traditional nose role. All signs right now point to him being used as a one gap NT a la Jay Ratliff not a two gap player like Cody or Wilfork. Still the NFC South is going to be much safer this year for QB's. Even though I r mus say that the SEC is still more talented then the NFL n dat includes the NFC SOuth right der. |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
I live in Charlotte amongst the so called "fans" of the Panthers and this is NOT a good move. I have seen this guy play over and over and he just isn't as dominant as people make him out to be. And certainly not for the $$$ its going to take to have him sign. He is missing so much during the games, and sperratically will make a play here and there. He hates dropping back in coverage, which what he did from time to time in Charlotte. I can't see him loving it in the 3-4 either. I think he invisions himself as a 100% rush end and its not going to be that way, not with orakpo on the other side. I am just not hyped on this guy like everyone else. Plus he's 30, so he has a few years left but not really high productive years. He will end up signing like a 7 year deal probably and void after 4, which leaves us with all that money assuming the cap comes back.
i would much rather see money spent on top notch corner or olineman, not another 30something player looking for the big payday |
re: Peppers signs with the Bears (updated - again)
The reports about Peppers lacking motivation are troublesome but maybe that had something to do with the system he was in and it's not like Carolina was stacked on defense so I'm sure he's tired of being constantly double teamed. I remember him saying he WANTED to play OLB in a 3-4 sometime last year. This guy is a two-sport athlete who played power forward for UNC and probably could've played in the NBA. I don't think he'll have any trouble dropping into coverage to cover the flats or a TE.

A 6'7 Power Forward in the NBA? Sorry but that's almost unheard of. Plus keep in mind he decided between being the number 2 pick in the NFL draft or possibly being a 2nd round pick int he NBA draft. |

ever hear of charles barkley? he was listed at 6'6" but probably wasn't even that tall. Why do you think they called him the Round Mound of Rebound. And I'm not saying Peppers would've been a NBA HOFer but I'd bet he'd be a double-double guy (12ppg/10 rebound average) which is pretty good. |

Daniel Snyder loves to spend big money on big names. So I fully expect him to sign Peppers, Dansby, and Rolle. Offensive line be damned.

Make no mistake though, Ware and Orakpo are very different. Ware is quicker and faster. Orakpo is stronger. In a 3-4, the opposing O can scheme to put Orakpo in coverage in certain situations, he's more of a liability in space than Ware would be. As a 4-3 RDE, he won't be in that situation. By the same token, I don't want a 250 lb. Ware with his hand on the ground trying to stop the run against 300+ lb Tackles.
But as Lotus mentioned, we need to get used to the 3-4 cause it certainly appears to be coming whether we like it or not and Orakpo will be at OLB. |
