Well if you are talking about this year Pro Bowl's, then I wouldn't put much weight into it. With so many people dropping out, you and I could have made it to the Pro Bowl. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Yeah, look at a guy like Joe Thomas. One of the elite LT's in the league yet their team isn't far behind us in draft picks. I know if I was a GM/HC I would take tackles only past round 2 and let the coaches do their job.

Well that team has been horrible mismanaged just like our team. They also picked up Brady Quinn in the first round and look how that worked out? |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
He would be a solid pickup for a second round choice.
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I'd just keep our second rounder and get someone like Ducassee, or hope charles brown drops, or get Saffold of Indiana, or possibly Veldheer.

True, but the point is they had faith that the 2nd or 3rd pick (can't remember when he was taken) would help their team. If anything they got worse. Drafting Roger Saffold in the second round or drafting Russell Okung in the first in my eyes would have the same impact come next year. Let's get Clausen or Berry and get a star player for years to come that will get credit for playing well and make them play better. Dont' get me wrong I have nothing but respect for the offensive line, but it's a sad reality that they get no credit from the media and fans until the offseason. |

If we could get a young, giant vet tackle and the best player available it would be ideal. I would note that while we are saying gaither only gave up one sack last season, he was OWNED by a then healthy Dwight Freeney in the playoffs. |

The problem, as I said, is that the Browns as an organization were terribly mismanaged, and as our team has shown, good players can't always save a mismanaged organization. |

It's weird to see a Redskins fan compare the Browns to the Redskins.. But I guess that's the truth eh? Anyways the point is mismanaged or not he's an amazing tackle who cannot win for his team. Not to mention both starters for that team last year were released/traded showing that he really had absolutely no impact on his quarterback? I understand those two quarterbacks were downright horrible, but it still has to have a bit of an impact considering these were two highly regarded draft choices coming from college. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Drafting BOTH of them would be the best for our team.
This is another smart option. With one problem, we have to trust Jason Campbell who again doesn't get respect until the offseason. I'm not trying to cause any arguement, but just saying when I think back to games from this past season and further back, I remember a quarterback who didn't fit anything the offense tried to do and made horrible decisions and when there was a good open receiver he would throw it short, because of bad instincts. Let's hope Mike can work his magic on him, because I wouldn't be surprised also if this option plays out. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
listening to ravens radio, he has problems showing up and working hard. the ravens really like him, i think i heard he was rated the no 6 tackle last year, gave up one sack last year with a bad arm.
ravens sources said while they really like gaither but they think he has hit his wall of potential and what you see now is what you will get in the future. they think oher has unlimited upside. another reason the ravens want to move him is b/c he will be an UFA next year and the ravens dont want to have to pay him starting top tier LT money next year, then have to give out another big top tier LT contract to oher a year or two later. basically they dont want 2 big money contracts for the same LT position. of the two, they would prefer oher long term. the ravens/ozzie seem to not like putting alot of money is one position. last year bart scott walked b/c they paid t-sizzle and ray lewis. but i dont think he will fit in the ZBS for us. hes the tallest guy in the nfl, has work ethic/concertration issues. i would wait to see whose available at our 2nd round pick before talking a great but ill-fiting LT just for the sake of getting a LT.
This alone tells me why not wait till next year & get him for no draft picks. We only have 5 picks & we need to make them all count. |

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Has anyone else that Shanahan has been much more willing to take on power blocking types since he came to Washington? When he first came here I conformed to the 300 or under stereotype but it seems like this time around he's more comfortable going into the season with a bigger offensive line. Who knows, maybe all those rumblings about Denver O-Lineman being light to handle the mile high elevation weren't so far fetched.

Nope, def haven't seen our final line so I'm not saying he's willing on anything hell maybe he'll run it for a bit.. people do usually go to their roots though it's going to depend on what happens personnel wise until we get a picture we can say that he'll develop it around our players and that's fine.. at the same time he may be developing the scheme around our players and seeing how they perform.. then he knows after actual GAME play what he needs to do I think that he'll find out a lot in the pre-season activities, but he could mold it later on as well he's not getting fired after one year no matter what |

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I think Jared is well worth are 2nd round pick , he's a starting tackle . Yes he might not fit are scheme that well ,but neither does Dockery (326) , Mike Williams ( 337) , or Hicks ( 335 ) who we signed this year. The guy can play football and would be are best olinemen ,so i dont care if he wasnt an honor roll student. And if they can get portis and hanyesworth to practice they can get him to aswell. Hopefully we can also get Okug ,but if hes not there at 4 ,i dont want to reach for another OT. At that point trade down , and draft best avalable. But are line would be much improved if we had this as are starting lineup.
LT- Okug LG- Dockery C- Rabach RG- Heyer RT- Gaither with Mike williams , Artis Hicks , Edwin Williams , and Chad Reinhart as are backups. |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I would start Hicks over Heyer everyday of the week, and twice on Sundays......lol.
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Does anybody else think this is the safest bet? It's almost a guarantee that Gaither is better than any 2nd rounder we pick up.
|
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
if we would get gaither, we would have to sign him to a new contract comparable with the top 10 LTs in the league. this, on top of our 2nd rounder.
if we draft okung we will have to pay him no 4 overall money. so we would be paying 2 big money contracts for 2 LTs, yet one would be playing RT. if we dont get okung or another LT in the first round, i could see it but we are talking aobut a big big man at 6'9" and 330+ pounds. i dont know if he will fit into what shanny/kyle want to do. in years past, i could see the skins going overkill on a position of need and adding both okung and gaither. nowadays, im not so sure. we seem to be running a tighter ship financially. besides, we can always wait a year and hopefully get gaither for a 3rd or later (ala ozzie not giving up 1st rounder lat year for boldin only to get him this year for much less). or if the ravens just let him go (ala bart scott) we can sign him for no compensation to the ravens. i have a feeling alot of these RFA guys like merriman and gaither are not happy about being tendered and will want to hit FA market next year. next years FA should be insane with all the RFA hitting the open market right? barring franchise tags, or anything real crazy happening in the new CBA. |

neither am I :D |
Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
I would do this in a heart beat. He is young and we really couldnt be guaranteed a beeter tackle at that point in the draft. With so many holes in our lineup to plug, we cant afford to waste draft picks when they can be spent on somebody who has already proven themselves.

Sorry, but there are no guarantees. With how deep this draft is on OT's, I wouldnt make the above statement at all. Plus, I heard the guy is an offensive version of Dexter manley. Hopefully, without the coke habit. |

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
ya know what I think?
I think if the Skins are on the clock and can pick their QB at 4, they will be on the phone with the Ravens to get this deal done for Gaither before they pick the QB. You can't have a 2nd round LT protecting a rookie QB. |

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Gaither really doesn't fit this offense. I would not give up our second on a RFA Tackle, but I would (If we get a QB in the first, especially Bradford) trade Campbell, Landry, and Andre Carter for draft picks, I believe you could get a second at best for Jason Campbell, a third for Laron, and a fourth for Andre Carter (Also a 7th most likely for Anthony Montgomery). If you take the 2nd+3rd+4th that should be able I believe to get a late first round pick, to get a solid left tackle like Charles Brown, or Roger Saffold. Go with Brown or Saffold instead of Gaither is my point.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?
Gaither would bring something that our offense (particularly our o-line) doesn't have a lot of and that's stability, but that's a big boy to be asking to zone block

I still think that maybe the plan is to see the zone blocking scheme work with bigger lineman. Of course trading for Gaither and giving him a new contract would be the huge step towards committing to that philosophy. Still even though he's not the best zone blocker he's still a punishing run blocker that's more then capable of protecting a QB's blind side. Also for what it's worth Shanahan does seem to be trying to correct a few of the things that hurt him when he was in Denver. One of those things was the difficulty his lines faced blocking the bigger D-Lines around the league so now he might be thinking that getting bigger O-Lineman could neutralize the effect. Think about it, right now we're looking at a line that with our current roster could feature Dockery (LG), BMW (RG), and Artis Hicks (RT). If Gaither was acquired that would be 4 "power" types. Rinehart is also a traditional power type. |

I do agree with you that he realizes what division he is in and probably needs a bigger line than he typically had in Denver. One thing that I am happy about is that he didn't bring in 2 pro-bowl runningbacks to primarily "pitch and catch" it. We are going to be a run first team and we finally have a coach who understands that the system's success is based on his players not that players will be successful based on the system. |

again I don't think you're right, because how does a QB like Whitehurst whose never played a down in the NFL get traded for a third, but a young QB whose played four full seasons in the NFL, and played well behind a crappy OL not get a third atleast. |

I find your lack of faith in Whitehurst disturbing. It's obvious that he wasn't allowed to play simply because the NFL couldn't handle Brady, Manning, AND Whitehurst competing for Super Bowls at the same time. It's better to have two superstars and everyone else. Also you are not debumping this pic! the same way a QB gets drafted 1st overall, potential or what somebody sees in him Whitehurst isn't the standard and JC isn't old but he's not young either, Whitehurst is just a tad younger than him. Just like not every Randy Moss will only take a 4th to get If we were offered and 2nd for Campbell you can pretty much bank that we would have 2 picks in the 2nd as of now. And if somebody was willing to offer it, they already would have. |

because with JC you know what you're getting so he may not be worth another teams pick, with Whitehurst they may see potential beyond a QB they could get in the 3rd. i do think JC is worth a 2nd/3rd round pick but to other teams he may not be. |
