Re: Redskins Release 5

I can understand the Marko cut somewhat. However, I can't really help but feeling he would have been better than a 38 year old Galloway. I mean how much can he really have left? Did he even play last year?!?!?

Defensewins 05-03-2010 02:18 PM

Re: Redskins Release 5

I think these cuts and their timing is meant to send a message to the rest of the roster to get off your asses and work hard. I like the move. Nothing like fresh blood in the water to motivate.
Monty getting cut is a no brainer.
Thomas and Kelly no longer have Vinny here to protect their roster spot. Time to produce or get the F out.
I am still amazed to read posts that say I doubt Galloway will take Kelly or Thomas' roster spot. Why not? If Shanny deems Thomas and Kelly not NFL worthy then Shanny will cut them regardless of who takes their spot.

I agree strongly w/your first point, and disagree as strongly w/your 2nd. Shanahan isn't likely to cut young guys like DT & Kelly in favor of Galloway, who might have another year in him. If one of those guys shows up really out of shape & drops everything, sure they can get cut, but its so unlikely. Even then I doubt it would be for the sake of getting Galloway on the roster.

I'm actually glad we got rid of Montgomery. I was tired of holding on to a low draft pick waiting for him to perform better than expected.

Time to being in the younger, better talent. Hail to the Redskins.
Not totally surprised with Mitchell getting released, but after the minicamp? Not sure why folks got all excited about the kid? He had a decent preseason, but was up against 2nd-3rd string defenses most of the time. Plus he came from Nevada, a pistol offense heavy on the run. The move also tells me we got the vet WRs to compete to play and not just to light a fire under the newbies' butts. Don't be surprised if Shanny releases another newbie later on when the roster has to hit 53. I hope Mitchell actually pursued a real degree at Nevada and not the typical basketweaving ones like Phys Ed or a general Communications degree. It is a 50/50 chance somebody is going to pick him up. Getting released at minicamp isn't very good.
I'm a Phys Ed/Health major at Longwood University I wouldn't call it a basketweaving major. At my school it is actually one of the harder education programs to get out of and requires a higher GPA to stay in the program then our Business school and requires the 2nd most credits to graduate out of the entire university. Don't hate on PE

Or Gym class....I can remember my PE teachers always saying "Gym (Jim) there is no Gym (Jim) here"

I don't know who is more uptight about their jobs dentist or PE teachers. God forbid you don't refer to a dentist as a Doctor.

I wish I would have majored in PE, not because it's easy, I'm sure it's not, just would be a sweet gig I think to be a gym teacher. Do some coaching on the side, summers off, not bad at all.

Haha it's true my professors go nuts if you call it "gym" class. It's a lot harder now than it used to be to get through it but it also depends on where you go to school as well. I transferred to Longwoods PE department and realized quick it was no joke. It's not surprising at all to see people not graduate on time haha like me

I switched from Sports Management to PE just because of the summers off and the coaching gig. It's awesome as long as you can find a job, which in VA good luck at this point

Re: Redskins Release 5
so why did we cut mitchell
Probably because he offers no value on special teams, but I'm still disappointed. Look at our top 3 RBs (Portis, Johnson, Parker) and top 3 WRs (Moss, Thomas, Kelly), and of those, only Thomas might be a regular on special teams. Any #4/#5 guys at those positions will probably be expected to contribute to special teams, so Marko was probably a victim of the numbers game. He definitely has the height, speed, and hands to excel somewhere if given the chance, I just hope that it isn't in our division.

I like the FO doing moves that fans wouldn't necessarily like. Shows that they are at least factoring that individuals talents and seeing that they won't mesh with the new scheme.

Especially with the fact that he wasn't contributing on Special Teams. We just don't have the luxury of keeping a guy just to be our 4 or 5 WR.

I'm glad someone is evaluating talent instead of hopes and dreams.

Not hating, but when my uncle was the HC of Ohio St football in the 80's, by far the most popular majors were PE and Communications. UNless you get into some really specialized subset of the two, it might really be hard getting a job nowadays. Probably was back then also.

I agree. I am glad that the FO seems to have a clue how to run a professional organization based on effort and ability.

Yea PE back then was most likely a joke, and I thought the same thing going into it. I just wanted to coach and have summers off. But now it's like damn I'm working my ass off just to get by classes. Couldn't believe it when I'm sweating over anatomy classes, exercies physiology classes and bio mechanics. All these just to teach gym haha. I was a assistant at my old college on the basketball team and I'd love to see those guys pass some of my Phys Ed classes haha. Times are definetely changing

Little strange Mitchell was let go so early in the process also it's suprising Montgomery didn't make it out-of-camp. Both players will be picked up very soon probably Washington Redskins West (Oakland Raiders).

Re: Redskins Release 5

I had high hopes for Marko. He has the size and speed to make it. I also liked his, take no s**t from the DB's attitude. I'll be interested to see if he makes it with another team and how well he performs if given the chance. "Tootsie Roll" Montgomery is just to damn lazy for his own good.

You may be too young for this name, but the Captain of the All-Time Preseason Team would have to be the inimitable Babe Laufenberg. He was an All-World QB in preseason while playing against the opponents' third-stringers.

Re: Redskins Release 5

I would've liked to keep Marko Mitchell. For a duo of 38 year old WRs, I think there's more potential there with Mitchell. BUT, I agree we need to light fire under their a$$es at each position, so they know that their time is limited if they don't produce..

Not surprised at all about Mitchell being released. I fully expected it, though not this soon.

No surprise on PJ Hill. Didn't even know we had James Robinson, don't even know who he is. Montgomery is mildy surprising, but once the Rams didn't take him in the Carriker deal it was pretty apparent he was gone.

Pretty surprised about Alridge though.
Maybe Alridge getting cut means that Torain is looking good? Or that we're only keeping 3 because of the STeams.

A general business degree is pretty mellow too though. Not taking away from what you're doing at all though; I had several friends go to Longwood for teaching.

yeah me too, any reason as to what happened? i thought he was the change of pace back we were hoping for, i really think we have to get another back unless they are thinking portis or parker has enough in the tank if they only have 1/3 of the carries

I don't know. Maybe he just didn't impress, or someone else is on their radar? I've been focused on a bunch of other things the past couple of weeks (and will be the next couple as well) that I've really not been keeping in touch with the Skins since the draft.

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS ORGANIZATION BEING AFRAID TO SUCCEED!!!

First they let Mason go, then Torrence then Mason again then Chase "Hornswaggle" Daniel (Super Bowl Champion) and Mason again and now Mitchell.

I am done...
