Re: Red Dead Redemption

While I understand myself to be well in the minority, I just can't understand what's so great about this game. It may as well be called GTA: Wild West. There's not a single thing new here other than setting. Same clumsy dated combat, same boring errand running, same yammering NPC's. While the graphics are nice, everything else in the game could have been done on PS2 (and was in fact!) Rockstar seems oblivious here to the tremendous advances in games since GTA 3: whether it be the evolved combat of games like Call of Duty and Gears of War, the freedom and player agency of Fallout, or the interactive narrative of Mass Effect. Maybe I'm being a debbie downer here, but when IGN starts giving out 9.7's and people start saying things like one of the best games of all time, I feel the product has to be better than OK. As it stands right now, firing up the box and taking Marston out on the plains feels like as much of a chore as chauffeuring people around Liberty City was.

I am going to have to agree here a bit with you. Now that I have moved farther into the game it has become a bit repeating with all the tasks. I actually liked Batman better then this game.

Batman started slow then really picked up. RDR started good and has now fizzled for me.

I am thinking either Mario 2 or Alan Wake as my next game.

I hear ya. I wouldn't say it's one of the best games of all-time, one of the best of the year maybe.

And I agree it's basically GTA in the Wild West, it's certainly not a game changer. Still, the change of scenery to the Wild West is what makes it enjoyable for me.

There are seriously times where I am like I have to ride all the way over there for a mission. I rather clean the house or go cut the lawn. At least on GTA you had the fun of driving a car to the spot. I know you can use the camp site to speed it along but that seems dumb to me.

For the long trips you can take a stagecoach or train.

Personally I like riding horseback across the map and shooting whatever, whoever, you come across along the way. :)

I agree, it's pretty much GTA in the Wild West. But for a GTA junkie like me, that's exactly what I want.

I played some of the other games you mentioned and I couldn't really get into them. MW and Gears were good but they're still just 1st person shooters. Gets boring real quick for me. And I couldn't last more than 2 sessions in Fallout. Hated that game, all you do is walk around and talk, talk, talk, talk..... Spend the whole game pusing "A" to answer questions... Did nothing for me.

I feel this has always been the case with GTA - you either love them or hate them.

Agreed... I was bored to tears with that game.

Usually I'm a big MW guy but even the latest map pack release hasn't lured me back. I'm lost in Red Dead.

Just be careful in Tall Trees. I spent 3 hours getting mauled by bears last night lol.

I really like Red Dead, but I feel like you never get anywhere with John Marston's story. You are always learning about other people, solving their problems.

Red Dead is one of the best games of the year, but not one of the best ever. Its not 9.7 good IGN.

On the subject of Fallout3, I loved it.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I will say Red Dead is way better then Fall Out 3 and the other RPG Oblivion. You need to be unemployed and have no family to enjoy those games, they are so damn long.

I hear ya Crazy, I guess I'm realizing I'm just not a GTA fan. Moreover, I didn't realize how similar RDR is to GTA4, I thought it was kind of a new game and direction. Glad you are enjoying it.

I will say this though. Fallout 3 is the best game ever! EVER! Right up there with Chrono Trigger, Tecmo Bowl, Soul Caliber, Final Fantasy 7, and SF2 as one of my iconic games of all time.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Never really got into GTA4 so RDR is all new to me...I'm having a lot of fun with the main story and playing poker. One thing that does disappointed me is the inability pay a hooker to service Marston's manly needs (shouldn't be too hard of a feature to implement)...oh and the lack any Native American presence.

I was disappointed in that too. But the guy's dedicated to his wife, what can ya do? You did get to see Reyes plowing that old broad towards the end of the game though. Haha. Honestly, I was hoping Marston would end up nailing Bonnie.

But I like the way he's pretty much a stand up guy despite the fact he had a rather unsavory past.

Don't want to give any spoilers but pretty good.

100% wasn't easy and some of the 100% stuff isn't available until after you finish the final mission.

I'm gonna go back in to get a few achievements including this sick one:
"Place a hogtied woman on the train tracks, and witness her death by train."

After that I'll give the multiplayer a try. Is the multiplayer fun?

Yeah multiplayer is fun if you have some friends to posse up with. Ottherwise it's boring by yourself.

Nope very different, but from some customers who've picked it up i've heard pretty good things about red steel 2. the first one was terrible though.

oh shoot, sounds like you work at a video game store. just bought fifa world cup 2010 for wii the other day. finally, madden has burnt out for me.

pretty cool game so far. i asked the guy at best buy which game btw fifa 2010 and fifa world cup 2010 is a better game, game play, etc, he said the world cup one without a doubt. its a good game, some fun features but i cant help but think id like the traditional fifa set up like amdden where you pick a team, trade add players, worry about salary, etc.

which one would you recommend for wii: fifa 2010 or world cup 2010?

skinsfanthru&thru 06-21-2010 01:27 PM

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I think the deeper more feature filled version would be the regular 2010 version but both average between 70 and 75 for review scores according to Metacritic - Movie Reviews, TV Reviews, Game Reviews, and Music Reviews.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Just sold my copy to a buddy at work, $45. I never really got into this game the missions much like GTA series seem redundant. Plus other then having to search everywhere for stuff the game is very easy, I never used "dead eye" I just point the little white dot at folks and shot them so freaking easy especially with auto targeting.

I know a lot of folks love this game, so good for them not for me.

Think I'm due for a short break from RDR, need to get back to MW2 for a bit. I downloaded the latest map pack when it came out and haven't even played it yet.

Yeah reviews of the end seem to be mixed. Guess I would lean towards liking it. I'm getting burned on it too, been making a big push these last few days to finish it up so I can move on.
