Yes I am with respect to Buster. It easy to blame others and outside factors for your personal failings in attaining a job. Having three degrees means nothing if they aren't of quality or suited for the job you're applying for.

I have learned work experience trumps education every day in most employer's eyes.

One of the worst things you can do right after you graduate college is go for your masters, you will have no better job afterward (at least to start), you will have missed out on two years of potential work experience and $$$, plus you will be farther in debit with loans (assuming you have to finance our education like most).

Experience trumps education in most cases but three degrees from tier-4 schools aren't going to help you compete against someone with the same experience and a degree from UVA.

You need to drive right past DC / Northern Va and head down to gods country in Suffolk Va. Its about 30min from Va. Beach shore line. Plenty of goverment jobs here with all the bases around here. I can drive 5 minutes one way and be driving through corm fields, drive 15 minutes the other way and be in downtown Norfolk, drive another 15min. and be at the beach.

LOL. Sorry about that. I think someone else mentioned it but often working for a company that contracts work with the government can be a great foot in the door.

Or you could be like my buddy who started his own company, some IT security company of some sort, got some small government contracts, ultimately got a contract with the Department of Defense, sold his company for some $100+ million dollars and retired at 40

That does sound appealing and I had heard good things about Va. Beach though being away from the area for so long I wasn't exactly sure about what the surrounding towns were and if they were any good. The thing is though that I want to live on that Virginia, Maryland, DC boarder as part of the reason I want to move back is that I have a lot of family in Silver Spring, Ashton, and Baltimore.

And with the way things are looking now my parents might be settling in Virginia themselves. My only regret is that I have to brothers in North Carolina but the good thing about Virginia is that it's close enough to drive.

Plus above all I want to be able to see Oriole, Ravens, Capital, and Wizard games. Based on what I've heard about Redskin games at FedEx I'm better off watching them at home.

Well he had started a few businesses before as well. And yeah he still hangs around with me whenever I see him but that's not that often since we don't live in the same town anymore. Season tickets to Caps, Wizards, Redskins, Nationals, owns a couple of restaurants, not a bad life

Oh it's not that. It's just that some people in this thread have kind of started throwing jabs at others and I want to go all Redskins vs Albert Haynesworth on them but the fact of the matter is that people that have been throwing jabs have also been helpful so I can't exactly single anyone out.

Anyway I just want to take a moment to thank everyone so far that has replied to the thread. Especially BD. A lot of this has been a great eye opener and exactly the kind of stuff I need to know to eventually secure a position with the federal government. So with that said keep it coming, even if it's only stories about people you know that have dealt with the federal government in some way shape or form.

Re: Trying to get a Government Job

Dirtbag, consider going for some entry level finance jobs. I work in Financial Planning & Analysis for a healthcare provider, and when I look for entry level candidates for our department, one of the first things I look for is an affinity for the quantitative and database experience.

If you can demonstrate that you're bright (high GPA in college, went to a good college), are decent with math, and have some experience with MS Access, then you fit the bill pretty well.

You've got accounting as an undergrad major and experience with MS Access. If I had a position open I'd take a look at you. My counterparts at healthcare providers all over the place would probably do the same. Or in other industries.

You'd basically come in, work with data for a couple of years (either maintaining databases, crunching numbers, compiling reports, etc.). Try to learn the business, and work your way up. Starting salary is typically in the $45K range for an entry level person, sometimes a little more depending on cost of living in the area.

But biggest piece of advice when interviewing in the finance/accounting world, talk up your math skills, your ability to think logically, and ability to manipulate data in excel and access.

Just one idea to consider.

I'm flattered that you presume I have a good GPA. Unfortunately thanks to me failing behind in my Accounting classes my GPA took a Mike Tyson like left hook to the face. I am decent with math (Got an A in Survey of Calculus, and a B in College Algebra, no idea how that happened to be honest with the Calculus grade being higher).

Thanks though for the suggestion with a title. Part of my problem in finding a job has been finding the actual titles of jobs I would qualify for. When I was looking at Sales jobs it was pretty easy but to be honest I don't really want to go into sales.

Anyway just to give everyone an idea of what I did in college heres a list of my most notable business courses with my grade. Keep in mind theres a lot of courses in between that I got D's and F's(income tax, accounting information systems, money & banking to name a few) especially back in 2007 when I got pretty sick. I've since been cured but it was hard to keep up in classes at that point in time. Plus at the start of college I was a huge party animal so that didn't help.

In looking at this I'm very tempted to go back and at least get a bachlors degree in accounting but hopefully the fact that I have taken and passed 18 credits worth of Accounting courses will count for something. In looking at my schools requirements it would seem I actually need 18 more credits. If my school offered it online that would be great but the only thing they offer online is an MBA.

Re: Trying to get a Government Job

Where did you go to school?

Unfortunately the GPA won't stand out, so don't even bother putting it on your resume. Rule of thumb, if it's not 3.0 or higher there's no point in putting it. But where you went to school carries more weight than your GPA anyway. I had a 2.7 but had a finance major with a math minor from a strong (but not elite tier) school, that got me in the door.

You can still talk up your database and excel skills. Sell the fact that you understand how to create queries in access, and do things like pivot tables and charts in excel.

This kind of thing would catch the eye of accounting departments in healthcare providers and insurance companies, finance departments, data warehousing departments, etc.

Sounds like you're not too sure what you want to do. Tell me if any of the below things appeal to you, and I'll try to steer you towards the right title match:

- Maintaining journal entries and ledger balances for the purpose of reporting financial performance.

- Pricing out contract proposals to determine whether a contract offer represents an increase or decrease in revenue, and quantifying said amounts.

- Designing processes, such as routes for a delivery truck, to maximize the number of deliveries in a day while minimizing time and expenses for things like gasoline.

- Working behind the scenes to maintain a database's integrity, permitting end users to reliably report accurate information.

- Handle business transactions, keeping records of cash collections, monitoring outstanding accounts, working to improve your company's process for collecting cash faster and more often

- Negotiate contracts with customers, suppliers, insurers with the goal of boosting revenue or reducing costs

- Assess business opportunities, develop a financial projection for said opportunity, develop financial metrics with the goal of supporting an executive and informing him whether the business opportunity is wise

- Be a boots-on-the-ground type, working in the operations of a company, to implement policies and procedures and oversee the execution of the business

- Analyzing operational efficiency in a business with the goal of enhancing throughput, speed, efficiency.

- Develop budgets and financial projections for a company, and assist deparment heads in the development of their budgets

- Calculating probabilities of certain events taking place, factoring in the cost of said event, for the purpose of developing an expected cost

- Develop reports on market share to assess competition within certain regions, helping to inform business decisions and the development of a firm's strategic direction

- Get very technical, and design systems to house data

- Get very technical, and design websites

- Get very technical, and actually write computer code to program the system to do whatever

- Interfacing with customers to handle insurance claims

- Interfacing with customers to sell products

- Visit clients to advertise services and drum up business for your company

- Design marketing materials and advertising to the customer

Dirtbag, Schneed has given you your keywords on what to search for on the job and company sites you're hitting up. Take advantage of this. Those short descriptions should give you an idea of what types of jobs you'll be looking at and what you'll be getting into.

From the looks of it, the USAJobs.gov site is much easier to navigate than when I was applying for jobs over 6 years ago. I did a query on jobs in Virginia that had to do with Accounting Budget and Finance, sorting by salary from smallest to largest, and there are many entry level opportunities in the NOVA area. So between those and the contractors websites to search on, you should have a good starting point.

MBAs or MSs? MSs, I assume.

I worked for Booz part time while an undergrad and then full time during my MS. I took a semester off between undergrad and grad. Took me 7 years to do BS(CompSci)/MS (Software Engineering).

Also, don't forget about polygraphs with certain agencies within the government. At my orientation, we were told that only 1 in 22 pass the poly that we had to take. If you fail the poly, you get blacklisted and can never support (as a contractor) that agency in the future. Just something to be aware of. We had several contractors try to take government positions, fail the poly, and then lose their contractor jobs because of it.

It varies program to program. The elite ones won't let you in without some work experience (Wharton, Chicago, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, etc.)

I went to Temple, what I'd call a middle tier program - it's probably the 2nd best MBA program here in the Philly area (after Wharton of course, Villanova is also solid). Temple let me (and others) in the part time program right after college.

Actually in a strange turn of events I might actually qualify for an accounting job with the government.
A. DEGREE: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree in accounting; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 semester hours may include up to 6 semester hours of credit in business law. (The term "accounting" means "accounting and/or auditing" in this standard. Similarly, "accountant" should be interpreted, generally, as "accountant and/or auditor.")
OR
I've taken 18 hours of actual accounting courses and 6 hours of business law and hold a degree in business administration. If I am qualified this is crazy because I took the second law class on a whim early in my college career and until yesterday when I listed my grades I had forgotten that I passed Intermediate Accounting II. Unfortunately though a lot of the positions also want at least one year of experience.

I'm hoping that the demand for accountants is so high that I can at least get my foot in the door. Maybe even get money to go back to school and finish up my BS in Accounting. Though I might be getting ahead of myself. I think in any other school I would have a minor in accounting but at the story goes the accounting department was pissed off at IT students who were using their Accounting Information Systems minor and calling themselves accountants so they decided to eliminate the minor completely.

Also maybe you guys can help me with this (as if you haven't helped enough already) but here's a list of jobs I've applied for with status updates.

Budget Analyst

My wife and I support charities and missionary work in Africa (even "adopted" a boy from Ethiopia and write letters/send money to him regularly).

I'm flattered so many people here spend their free time thinking about me and searching through my posts. :laughing2

But, since Smooty "didn't want to make this thread about Buster", I'll bow out now.

Happy Father's Day to those who didn't choose abortion. :food-smil

Good luck in your job search, Dirtbag. I apologize that my mere presence causes certain characters to derail your thread and honest quest for help. :D

Re: Trying to get a Government Job

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update. I've applied for three pages worth of jobs on USAJobs. A lot of them are clerical jobs like filing clerk or assistant (aka secretary but I'm a little nervous saying it outright, but don't laugh, in Russia it's an honor to have a male secretary), statistician for the census, accounting technician, and many others.

Right now the plan is to stay in Atlanta working temp jobs while I wait for extremely long hiring process is executed. Hopefully if there are people more qualified then me (and I believe there most likely is) then by the time they're ready to hire my competition will have found work elsewhere. Still I am overqualified for a few of the jobs I applied for so I figure that somethings got to stick.

I should be fine. I've done a few mock interviews before during school (around 3 or 4). On the job interviews I have been on I've killed it, but those were unfortunately commission only sales positions where I had to cold call. Plus it's easy to succeed in those interviews as all you have to do is smile, then tell them you're competitive but caring at the same time. So how I do in an actual interview for a regular finance type position remains to be seen. In the meantime I've been in contact with AccountTemps in an attempt to get some work experience.

My first dress in a suite interview was with the federal reserve of richmond. I had to take a hand written 3 or 4 question timed essay test for the first hour. Then i sat in a room for about 2 hours while 4 people asked me questions in a rotating fashion. Then they graded my test in front of me and had me explain the logic in each of my answers.

I didn’t get offered the job, but I think it had more to do with the fact I hadn’t graduated yet and would be able to work for like 3 or 4 months, at least that’s what I like to tell myself. I still want to call and ask why. The experience though was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I crushed each interview thereafter.

Re: Trying to get a Government Job

I had an interview with GE a few years ago. Absolutely brutal. It was an all day affair, had to go room to room, first was a one on one interview, then with a group of 2, group of 3, and finally with a whole room full of people with everyone firing off questions.

Each interview was completely different too. Some people were really nice, some were complete a-holes. Some asked work related questions, and some were just totally off the wall. I was mentally exhausted afterwards. I didn't end up getting the job but honestly I'm glad. I figure if their interview process was that intense the job was probably no picnic either. It sure was an interesting process to go through though.

That story is a load. Or more accurately it is titled quite creatively. The data doesn't show that a person working for the gov't makes double what another person does in the private sector FOR THE SAME JOB. It says that gov't workers are paid more but does not account for why. Mostly it is because the Fed delegates out the lower level jobs to contractors now.

Re: Trying to get a Government Job

Looks like the Feds are getting more professionally driven organization and ever. And most of these people can work anywhere so I would imagine the feds have to compete for their services. Hell, TSA agents are now making well over 60K nevermine those working in the hill, justice department, energy, high military brass (looks like Dates is going to ax some generals), treasury, state (yeah, you want to be in Iraq or Congo in the middle of the monsoon season?). No wonder D.C. is teaming with yuppies.

Note which departments hardly have any people.

What TSA are making 60?. My brother would probably be pretty mad to find out he was making not even 40 while everyone else is making 60K. Where did you find that info?

What most people forget about and don't account for is the benefits people receive while working for the feds.

Sorry, I didn't mean the imply the average salary was 60K. A friend of mine works for the TSA as Transportation Security Specialist...he's pulling in 60K a few years ago but the max range for that position is $103,563 now so who knows what he's pulling now.
