If you had to choose between K. Williams and R. Torain, which would it be?
I say even at this point. Ask me after the Ravens if both get significant time. Right now though if you want an answer Williams just based on his better ypc in last night's game. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
If he was smart, he sign with the 49ers were he would get lots of playing time as the #2 back.
|
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
At this point I really don't see a need to sign him here either. We have a good mix of backs already on the team and bringing him in just makes the rb log jam even tighter.
I agree with you FRedskin, he should go to the 9ers. There is greater chance for him to have success there then in St Louis. I was into to bringin Westbrook here in the early parts of summer and even into the begining of training camp, but now he would just take away from some youth we have here. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I don't want to sign him simply because I don't want to feel obligated to keep his brother.
|
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
He had his chance it's time to give the youth a chance.

No worries dirt....the only time you have any obligations is when you are writing checks, to players that is. And I don't think that is your department. I think Coach is gonna keep the best 53 that gives us the very best chance of winning no matter what your name plate says or how much you make, not who your brother is. |

Redskin Insider:
Posted at 4:36 PM ET, 08/15/2010 Redskins remain interested in Brian Westbrook The Redskins have been through their first preseason game and got a good look at young running backs Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams. But Coach Mike Shanahan said after Sunday's practice that the club remains interested in veteran free agent Brian Westbrook. "Like I told you, I'm not sure what direction he's going," Shanahan said. "But we've been entertaining that option. I'm not sure what direction he's going at this time." Shanahan said there is no timetable for action. ESPN's John Clayton suggested late last week that Westbrook was likely headed to St. Louis by Monday, a claim the Rams denied. St. Louis, though, is one team that has remained interested in pursuing the former Philadelphia Eagle throughout his free agency. Denver, another potential suitor because of a backfield decimated by injuries, last week signed veteran Justin Fargas. The Redskins rushed for 140 yards on 41 carries in Friday night's 42-17 preseason victory over Buffalo. Torain (17 carries, 62 yards) and Williams (11 carries, 51 yards, two touchdowns) got the bulk of the work. Veteran Larry Johnson is scheduled to get his chance this Saturday against Baltimore, with fellow veteran free agent signee Willie Parker playing more the following week against the New York Jets. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Yeah Westbrook, this season will be different...... this season your but will be healthy and sitting at home watching the games cause you failed to accept any of the offer's extended to you. lol.
|
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I just don't know why we would want Westbrook at this point. Torain and Williams seem perfectly capable and would give us the opportunity to get younger at the position while gaining valuable experience.
The only way I could see signing him would be if one of the other veterans craps out. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
It's possible that it is just a plot to make everyone work harder and stay on edge. If Shannahan makes everyone believe that he is still interested in Westbrook then they don't feel safe.
Honestly the only thing to gain with Westbrook is a 3rd down back but I'm sure that the other guys (Torrain and Williams) are pretty capable. I do not see Willie Parker making to the 53 man roster. Hell, he might be gone before then. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Today's the day we find out...from CSN's report this morning, it's between us and the Rams now...surprised that Denver is not in the talks anymore.
I don't think we need him, nor really want him now, at least not to carry the ball. CP, LJ, Torain and Williams will be solid. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
There's some not that reliable information that with Coffee's retirement, the Niners have emerged as a last-second darkhorse for Westbrook.

^not to mention the Saints are now looking for another RB.

Wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers stepped in. I'm thinking it really is just about money to the guy. Not even considering that point I don't think that our hand should be extended any longer.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Wonder if the Texans would be interested.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Throw Houston in the mix as well ... maybe.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
With all these injuries I wonder if we could offer up Parker to someone. But since he's the #4 back right now and the likelihood of him getting cut is high, doubt someone would give up very much, if anything, in return.

One would think he would use his noggin and realize someone his age is not going to get a huge contract plus adding his injury to the mix. Most older players want to go to a good team and will take less money so long as they have a chance at getting a ring before they retire. I can't imagine he's not thinking a long those lines. If he's holding out for money and accepts a ton of money from a bad team just for the money he'd be an idiot. Maybe he was just waiting to see how the Skins looked or played in the first preseason game before making a decision. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Doubt it's all about money at this point for BW, I think he's just waiting for the right situation more than anything. And skipping out on some of training camp probably isn't a bad bonus either.

I remember some analyst mentioning the possibility of this. Hell even if we just get round swaps with a team we think that will do worse.. or somewhat conditional |

Johnson was not used and is supposed to be show cased this Sat. I wonder if Parker will be used and possibly shopped for a trade of a player at another position. |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Ok so teams who have needs of a RB;
Titans Saints 49ers Houston Anyone else? I can see him coming out today and saying more teams have contacted him and he's going to talk to all before making a decision... which may come Fri. lol. I'm just betting he stalls a little longer even though word was out today was the day. |

Parker is supposed to get a lot of playing time vs. the Jets in week 3 Bills also in play for Westbrook, allegedly |
re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I was wondering if they'd jump in with Fred Jackson's broken hand.
Yep, LJ will be featured in game #2, FWP supposed to get majority of carries in #3. |

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
We don't need Westbrook for godsakes. IF we sign him just a waste of money and a roster spot. We have two starting caliber RBs plus two young potential studs. IF we want a cheap FA player get a LB, CB, or S. Something that is needed to shore up depth.

Yep. Just caught the breaking news on comcast. Good luck

Re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Betts to the Saints
|
Re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Niners need him way more than we do!!!! Why would we have bit since we have CP, LJ, and WP. All 3 starting NFL RBs.

Actually the niners are now very deep. They have a rookie 6th round pick from miss. State (Dixon) who was very impressive against the Colts. |

They did lose Coffee though, so they are at best just as deep as we are. Even if we do cut Parker(more than likely with the newbies in tow), we have two stud starters and two promising young guns. Westbrook is a walking injury and should only play as a 3rd down back at best. Only thing that might help is he is now in the NFC West, a rather weak division. |
Re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
Yaaaay, now we can move on. Lets go Torain & Williams.

agreed, i really like those two young guys. we need some youth on this team, and shanahan knows how to coach up young backs. bye bye parker. |
Re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
I wasn't expecting us to sign Westbrook anyways, I think our backfield looks decent with Portis/LJ/Torain/Williams? It would've been overkill had he signed here. And with him on the '9ers he'll get more pt as Gore's primary backup.
|

Absolutely. Unless Parker amazes us against 1st-teamers in game #3, I think he's gone and two two young backs are in...which would be best for our team for this year and beyond. |
