Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas are down the depth chart

Wide receiver Joey Galloway is 38. In the last two seasons, he has a total of 20 receptions for 205 yards with no touchdowns. Roydell Williams has been out of football the past two seasons.

At the outset of Redskins training camp, however, Galloway and Williams are listed as co-starters at the X receiver, or split end, position. Former Redskins high draft picks Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are further down the depth chart.

Obviously, the Redskins are only getting started. Thomas and Kelly, who injured his hamstring before camp, will have opportunities to impress in camp and throughout the preseason schedule. But it appears they have a lot of work to do.

"What we do is we get a depth chart at the end of OTAs [organized team activities], and Joey, we had him as the no. 1 guy along with Roydell Williams," Coach Mike Shanahan said. They were "kind of tied at the X receiver position. We felt those two guys had played the best through the OTAs and that's why Joey was listed along with Roydell as the No. 1 X."

The coaching staff moved top wideout Santana Moss from the X spot to Z, or flanker, during the offseason. It appears the 10-year veteran has a firm grip on his position, so the battle for playing time will be at the spot opposite Moss.

Washington traded its first-round pick in the 2008 draft and selected Thomas, Kelly and pass-catching tight end Fred Davis with its three second-round picks. Davis impressed while starting in place of injured Pro Bowler Chris Cooley last season.

After struggling with maturity issues as a rookie, Thomas improved his work habits last season, bumped Kelly from the starting lineup in Week 6 and had a seven-catch, 100-yard, two-touchdown performance in a Week 13 loss to the New Orleans Saints. But he sat out the final two games in 2009 because of an ankle injury.

Kelly missed most of his rookie season because of knee issues the Redskins were aware of when they drafted him. He worked hard to recover from microfracture surgery and impressed during the 2009 preseason, but was demoted in favor of Thomas because former head coach Jim Zorn was dissatisfied with Kelly's route running.

Thomas and Kelly were slowed again by injuries during Shanahan's offseason program. "Both guys were hurt," Shanahan said. "Devin had some problems with his legs and so did Malcolm, and you can't really impress anybody if you're not practicing."

Redskins officials did their due diligence in discussing whether to sign former free-agent wideout Terrell Owens, who this week joined the Cincinnati Bengals, but Shanahan didn't want Owens. A trade for San Diego Chargers wideout Vincent Jackson remains a possibility. A lot may depend on how Thomas and Kelly fare in the preseason.

"They will get their chances," Shanahan said of the third-year players. "This is where we start. It's a starting point. It's surely not where we're gonna finish. It could be. There's gonna be competition. There was competition today. Devin had a very good [first] practice today and made some good catches. It's part of an evaluation process. But you have to start somewhere."

I think one of the reasons Galloway & Williams are ahead of MK & DT is cause that's were they are right now & when they watch film they will see how the routes are supposed to be ran.

It is really disappointing about Devin and Malcolm -- I understand that to an extent there is nothing you can do about injuries but it just seems like from the start, if it's not one thing, it's another. They came in with poor conditioning, bad work ethic, injuries piling on injuries. I wouldn't mind considering this a make or break year and cutting ties with either unless they show at least a 600-700 yard season.

Unless Galloway's running a 5.0 and huffing and puffing worse than Andre Smith, I do not understand the amount of hyperventilating people are doing just because he's with the first team. By all accounts, he still hasn't lost his speed just yet.

Don't be surprised if Devin Thomas doesn't play very much this year....because he stinks.

Kelly has the skills to play in the NFL. Unfortunately his nickname is Mr. Glass so I'm not sure he can survive in the league either.

I agree rb. I know it is only a hammy, but damn, not a good way to start. The guy already is a victim of "arrested development" because he was oft injured when we first got him. If he misses a significant amount of time this season I say we cut our losses.

Extremely early..? We are in training camp with 13 days until pre-season and then less than a month before Week 1 vs. dallas.

Upset no, but concerned/disappointed YES. We have a 38 year old WR in Galloway and Vet. Williams who has been out of the league for several seasons and they have unseated to this point two young bucks going on there third year in the NFL that haven't proven much of anything and are clearly behind again and once again injury concerns. This is alarming.

WR is our weakest link right now IMO. We need to get this shored up before the bombs start flying.

Shanahan is simply sending an early message that all spots will be earned.

Taylor Jacobs was Mr. Glass also. Guy could never stay healthy. Not too many Spartans cut it in the NFL anymore. I am not sure why that is, but Thomas is just going along with the trend possibly. Both really need to step it up. If that La Canfora article is accurate Shanny might have some surprises in store for us if they don't.

PA LEASE just like we were going to trade AH this offseason. JLC may have some connections but Adam Schefter he is not, especially when it comes to Redskins affairs. They have him blacklisted.

Kelly has always been injured it seems... college and pro. The only time I read about him in the press is when it's a hamstring thing. Always a hamstring... I doubt if he will ever be any kind of impact receiver when he can never stay 100% healthy.

Kelly's body is never going to make it through an NFL season. He's always nicked up and never plays. He get's hurt in practice, when there is no hitting. WTF??

One thing about Shanahan, he'll usually lean toward the veteran. Especially at this time of year, and especially if he's trying to motivate the younger players, establish a new culture, and set the precedent that everything must be earned.

There really isn't much to gain at this point from putting Galloway down the depth chart. Dude's like a 15 year veteran, he's not going to fall for those games or feel threatened that his starting job is in jeopardy. He knows what his purpose is here. DT, on the other hand. Here's a guy in his 3rd year still waiting to break out and now some 38-year old WR is threatening to knock him down the depth chart? That should push DT to go that extra mile and really earn that starting spot.

The message I am hearing is one or both are in serious danger of getting cut leading up to opening game. We cannot continue the old Cerratto practice to holding roster spots for unproductive players. We do not have a deep squad and WR is a concern. It is not dire but it is not good either.
