Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
Thanks for all the feed back it confirms some of the stuff I some what knew. I've been busy at work and while I did not resond back right away all the info was very help full. I might wait a month and see if prices drop even more. As for budget I'm thinking around $600 to $800.

In the price range yo ucan get a real nice 42 inch plasma. There are folks out there that will come to your house calibrate your TV to get the best picture. Kind of crazy. CNET's quick guide to TV calibration - CNET Reviews |

I just bought a Panasonic 46" plasma for $800 on Amazon a few months ago, I'm extremely happy with it. I'm no tv expert or anything, but I've been told by a lot of people that its best to stick with well known brands for TVs. I would check out Amazon, they have some fantastic deals

Matty you doing some serching to pull up this thread. I have been looking and I have found a few 40 inch Hd TV's I can fit into the Entertainment Armoire we have. Its a Samsung 40" 1080p 60hz. My question is 60hz enough? Here is a link to the TV. 40" 1080p LCD TV Series 5 | Samsung LN40C530 - LCD TVs |

It might be a little less than you need for the newest and most graphic-intensive games, but you'll be happy with it. The one you picked has a ton of inputs and Samsung speakers usually sound great. If you're trying to fit an storage unit nicely and this one lets you get the biggest TV it can fit, go for it. Most people don't notice the differences in refresh rates. As long as you don't invite Matty over, no one will say anything about it other than "nice TV". :cheeky-sm Samsung is my favorite brand. I have a 42" Sammy and it was the best-looking picture in the store. A few years old and still looks awesome. I've noticed Samsungs are usually the brightest and clearest displays in the stores. They're one of the best, if not THE best. |

To my surprise she seem to know her stuff about the TV's and said this TV had high ratings. She said if I watched sports I might want a higher HZ but said nothing about playing games. I don't play video games so would 60HZ be fine for sports or should I look for 120Hz? I do have space issues and I have only found a few 40" TV's that will fit in a space un 38". |
Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
For fast moving things like sports, a higher Hz rating is recommended.

If you are from 480 to 720/1080 you will never notice the mhz thing |
Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
The problem I have is in the 40" TV's when I go from 60HZ to 120HZ the size jumps about an inch making it too big. If its that important to have the 120 over the 60 I could go with the 37" TV. See right now we have a space issue but we are looking to move which could be in 3 months or 3 yrs. If I knew then size would not be the issue but if we are in our current home for over a year or so I really want the bigger TV.

That's why I was saying, take the 40" with 60hz over a smaller TV with higher hz. It will fit your furniture better, give you a bigger screen and maybe save you some money too. As mredskins said, you probably won't see a difference. It's your first one, it will look amazing compared to your previous TV. :food-smil |
Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
Samsung- best value for what you're getting in the LCD market. And go for the 120hz if you can spring it... you'll be having the set for a while and it definitely makes a difference in sports.

I do like to watch golf so that could be an issue. I doubled checked my measurements yesterday and I have 38 1/2 inches to work with. That gives me no wiggle room at all but will fit. |
Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
Ok so the Samsung with 120hz will fit where I need it to go so I'm going to go with this TV. I'm waiting to see the sail around black Friday before buying.
What do you guys think of this choice. The AllShare feature even allows you to sync up your entire household, via a wired or wireless DLNA connection that lets you stream your PC audio and video files to your HDTV using your remote. And Samsung's Touch of Color design combines texture and color that will complement any decor. |

Dude you are seriously still looking for this TV? Sh-t or get off the pot!
I'm a Panasonic guy myself, they make top notch plasmas.
But if you're going in the 37" range, don't be afraid to check out Vizio. I have a 37" Vizio LCD in my bedroom and it's great. At that size you can get by with 720p too, no need to go full HD.
I recently got a Vizio 46" 1080p LED/LCD with 120hz, and it's fantastic. Got it with a Sony blu-ray player for under $1K at Costco. The TV has that ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the picture based on how much light is in the room. Pretty cool. I would have liked a 240hz, but honestly sports and action movies look pretty awesome to me. |

No I kind of got busy and forgot about the TV until my wife's new washer and dryer showed up Friday . So I did a little research yesterday and came up with the Samsung that would fit. The good news is that the washer and dryer have so many different controls and selections I can now tell my wife I don't know how to use them. For some reason they look like there is a bunch of new stuff on them to break. |

Oh yeah I saw your post about the dryer. What is up with that? Talk about a money making scam the dryer business has going. When I got my new dryer I told them no thanks I will do it myself. They are like $16 and I think Sears or who ever charges like $50 or $75 to put one on, total BS. When a wife actually ASKS for a household or kitchen appliance, GET IT! You can't get away with giving one as a gift any other time! :D I'm shopping for a 37"ish LCD or plasma now...it is a tough decision. A lot of options. I think I'm narrowed down to Samsung and Vizio, but the Toshibas seem to have great reviews and reliability. Go for the Samsung if you think it is your best choice. I have a 42" Sammy 1080p HDTV and it's been great for years. |

Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
Guess we all figured that's common knowledge.
Another small piece of advice, get a HDMI cable to hook things up from your box to the TV. It's the best quality cable you can use, otherwise you're not getting everything you can out of your TV. |

HDMI gives you the best picture with the easiest hookup but I believe for the best picture you still should run component cables (high end ones). Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help
From what I understand while there's not always a huge difference, component can't handle 1080p so you would definitely want HDMI for blu-ray, plus the ease of having one cable is nice.

Is there competition in your area? I would tell them do this now or I will take my business to a Cable company. There's no fcking reason you should pay $100 up front for the box. Oh and don't over pay for an HDMI cable. They are dirt cheap and no more than 15 bucks. |

true enough. 1st try hooking up some rabbit ears to it I bet you pick up at least all your local channels in HD, I am being serious. My locals look better over rabbit ears then through Comcast. |

He probably could have sweet talked them into a free upgrade or a few months worth of free movie channels, but telling them to F off probably isn't the best route. |
