Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Aw, shucks.
I've read about and watched game videos of a bunch of draftable QB's. Ponder is the one who seems to me most likely to be a solid starter. Not only that, I think he will be ready to play as early as any other QB in this class. What he doesn't have can be remedied in the film or weight rooms, whereas other QB's in this class seem to have drawbacks which are more difficult to fix. I say use the #10 pick on a defensive beast (like Von Miller or Cameron Jordan) or trade down to still grab a defensive beast later in the first round. Then draft Ponder in a later round.
Copy cat. lol |

How am I a copy cat? I know SS mentioned Ponder before but I have since done my own "independent" research and come to a similar "independent" conclusion. Or did you say something that I missed? Here's my mock draft right now, which I could not have copy catted: 1 Von Miller OLB Texas A&M 2 Christian Ponder QB Florida State 5 Ryan van Bergen DE Michigan 5 Phil Taylor NT Baylor 6 Clint Boling OG Georgia 7 Graig Cooper RB Miami 7 Johnny Brown S Mississippi |

If he's lucky he'll go in the third. I mean look at it this way. Someone like Locker or Mallet (possibly both) is going to fall to the second round. From there Ponder will have to compete with that Devlin, Dalton, Stanzi group and hope to emerge as the top guy in that second or third tier despite his elbow problems. Colt McCoy last year had much more going for him then Ponder yet he fell to the beginning of the third round. As you all remember McCoy was deadly accurate, experienced, and mobile with decent arm strength. And on top of that he was not only a leader, but a leader that was at the forefront of a national championship run. Ponder has some of those attributes. He's accurate when healthy, he's mobile, he's a great leader, and he has a good arm on top of 3 years worth of starting experience. However he also comes from a program that couldn't even get to the BCS despite being in the ACC (McCoy did it twice). And ironically I'm not even saying that I don't want Ponder, in fact I actually wouldn't be to disappointed if we got the kid. However I wouldn't draft him before the third round at this point. Plus the funny thing is that as weak as the ACC has been in recent years, they're still the best conference these days when it comes to producing QB's (Vick, Ryan, Rivers, Schuab). |

I know you have your own independent conclusions. I wasn't trying to be rude, just joking. |
Scout take on Cam: “the structure of that offense made him look more accurate than he is. It’s all play-action based, throwing to wide open receivers, with bubble screens that pad his numbers." classic spread-bust pick + character issues? Pass
If it was that easy how come Auburns last QB couldn't do it? Or if it was so easy, how come teams with more talented players didn't switch to the Auburn offense and get these easy receptions and wide open recievers? |

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
SS, any buzz on going a different defensive direction at #10 than OLB?
What I'm thinking is that Cameron Jordan could be a Pro Bowler at 3-4 DE. We could take Jordan at #10 perhaps. Then we would have potential Pro Bowlers at each level of the defense. When you look at the defense horizontally, Miller or Quinn make sense. But if you look at the defense vertically, a DE like Jordan makes sense. |
Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
We need to look at the defense diagonally...haven't heard anything recently.
Warpath Plug: Matt Bowen will be attending the Senior Bowl and afterward we'll hold a Q & A with him about who drew the Redskins interest and what he thinks we should do. Stay tuned for that. |

Is it a coincidence Cam Newton co-signed Bus Cook and this company as his agents?!

The co-company hired is D.C. area based agency... I'm sure it's nothing, but just thought it was interesting. |

Found this little nugget on the Skins blog. Doesn't sound like too many sports columnists are pro Newton. I can't really say I disagree either.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Just one cautious word when it comes to selecting Newton: PROJECT!
Are we conceding that Michael Vick's early years are the way to go? Kyle's offense is too structure for the likes of Cam Newton - the one look QB. A team drafting Cam Newton will have to take him as is and not try to reinvent him. Our offense dictates that we stick with the drop back/make the reads QB. |
Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
I am now in the Pro Cam Newton bus. He remindes me so much of Big Ben that it isn't funny. I would like that styled QB behind center in DC.

Well with all the speculative fan driven rumors in the media nowadays I thought I had a real shot to get some face time. AP Wire: Redskins message board member uncovers story Cam Newton wants to join Skins team after signing DC based agent. We have the exclusive interview next. That could have been me, and now you've just ruined it.... :cussing: |

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Newton may be an extremely gifted athlete, but I think it's a simple decision. Reach for Cam Newton at #10 or wait until next year and draft T Pryor of Ohio State in the 4th round. They are almost indentical in size -both gifted runners that can escape defenders and torch you for big gains. Pryor is a more polished passer and has started 3 bowl games with his Sr. Season only to get better. Pryor faces a 5 game suspension for selling memorabilia so his draft stock may be on the low end.

I think him getting suspended was stupid. It was given to him. I would think it was mine and do what I wanted with it too. Who the hell gives someone something and then punishes them for selling it?! |

Someone wo wants to punish him for something, but can't find anything better then what they found. He must have been pulling a "Will Hill" and the school doesn't want either they or him to be embarrassed so they cooked up some other lame excuse. Edit: Sour. |

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
I am a firm believer that Newton will drop considerably farther than most think. I have read a lot of posts regarding the spread offense, his arm strength, mobility yada yada yada.
But his character is still a big question mark. the most recent focus was on the money that allegedly changed hands for him to attend Auburn. NCAA investigated and declared him eligible based on what they found stating that the wrong doing was isolated to his father and Newton had "plausible deny-ability". But this is also the same NCAA that investigated Reggie Bush when he was at USC and declared him eligible. Only to see him surrender his Heisman later on for the same infractions. Lets not forget that Newton left Florida in a cloud of shame, when he was found to be in possession of stolen property, specifically a laptop. Then he spent a year at a small school in Texas and really did not get any real Div 1 experience until he got to Auburn. So I don't think Newton will go in the top ten. I think he will be lucky to go in the top 20. He will be there at 10 when Washington picks. Be interesting to see what happens there. |

What is really going to give scouts & GMs fits is that he appears to have the 'it' factor & leadership ability, seems confident & comfortable in the limelight (though that nat'l championship game might've been some of his worst tape this year). |

You're kidding right? What, does new big man Mr. Garrett not like Romo?!? |
Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
not to mention, Kitna & McGee looked pretty decent in their time this year. I'd say they at least have a good backup in McGee for a few years. Kitna is old though.
They could draft a qb that high to groom him for a few years, I just don't see them doing that. They could add a few players & get back to contention, but another qb isn't where their needs are. |

Not throwing stones. I said the same thing several posts ago. It was either here or another message board, but it was mentioned that Dallas was either looking to shop Romo or that he might be let go or that his contract was not going to be renewed. In any case I remember the typical... "what do you think... sign him up? He's better then Grossman" statements. |
Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
Romo signed a 6 year deal in 2007. Outside of some silly fan talk, there has been no legit talk of him being dealt.

If we draft Newton, me will be sad.

Id be interested in reading that from a credible source. But that is the first I have heard of it. Romo is under contract until 2014, so anything about "not renewing his contract" is highly suspect. |
Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft
According to Don Banks' first mock draft on SI.com he has the 'Skins taking Cam Newton as the second qb in the draft, behind the Bills taking Gabbert. And that's while Von Miller is still on the board. Idk bout you guys but I'd much rather have Miller than Newton. And if Shanny did go qb at #10, I think he'd be more inclined to take Locker than Newton. I've heard mixed reviews about Locker at Senior Bowl practices though, I've heard some reports say he's looked decent and other reports say he looked inaccurate and hasn't really improved his stock.
