Re: Name change
I would still route for the team, and mainly just chalk it up to another reason why I hate danny snyder (even if it wasn’t his fault). But my relationship to the team would change. Maybe I would like them more. Probably I would like them less. It would no longer be the same team. This would be a major change. Maybe for the better. Probably for the worse. There would undoubtedly be some disconnect, for me at least.

Re: Name change
The team name is pretty important, it's a big part of the entire package of a team.
The name, colors, uniforms, those are the only things that really stay the same. Players and coaches come and go, and even ownership to a lesser degree. So if you're a fan of the team, aren't you also a fan of the name to a certain degree? |

Also, I'm almost positive the Senators were originally called the Nationals.
thats pretty cool I didnt know that, i guess i kinda see where he was going with it. I dont want the name changed but in time who knows what will happen. Im guessin 10 years before they changed "old glory" to "old DC", people thought it was just PC crap and it would never be changed either. |

Sorry if you read my previous comment Matty, I misread what you wrote. Please accept my apology. If you didn't read it, good. On the subject, I'd be fine with a change only if it were changed slightly to the 'Skins. Everyone would still know what it means, but it would be a good gesture and a compromise that probably should be done. |
Re: Name change
Well the song mutilation was cheaper. A franchise-wide rebranding will cost millions, perhaps over a billion...and for what valid reason? None.
The pittance they'd spend in new signage (marketing is always changing so I dont see that as an increased cost) would be more than offset with the sales of new hats, shirts, mugs, etc.
As a historical note, even when Washington's baseball team was called the Senators their officical name was Nationals and had been since the 1860s. Charley Brotman took to calling them the Senators because he couldnt come up with a good logo for Nationals and then everyone started calling them the Senators. Nationals wasnt some name they pulled out of thin air.
Oh awesome man, thanks. |

Snyder would have to renovate all of the team facilities, the stadium, new licenses would need to be obtained, web domains, uniforms and a lot of things we won't even think of. |

Washington Whalers? It rhymes and we could have a kick ass Killer Whale with a harpoon through it's torso as our logo. Brilliant!

Re: Name change
But its still the same team, just a different name. It amazes me that anyone cares what they are called. I am a fan of the team no matter what silly nickname they use.
No it really wouldn't be the same. They would still be Washington DC's pro football team and i guess most people from the area would still cheer for them. For me the name is everything...I have been a Redskins fan since i was 5 years old and it started with the colors and the name of the team and grew from there. The team i grew up loving is the Redskins and if they are no longer called the Redskins it will feel like the team I love got killed. And i can't see myself keeping my season tickets and driving 4 hours each way to see any team other then the Redskins. |

Dan should do some nice little PR moves and install something at the entrances of FedEx with a little team/name history, donate to some native american museums, or something.

Not bad. They can view the team as a symbol of recognition and pride. I wonder if teams had started changing there names purposely before this liberal move started, (We don't want any reference to indians in American football) if they would now be complaining of discrimination. Just a thought... |
Re: Name change
I hope never. This was never an issue until the early 90's when "politically correctness" came into focus. Society has pussed out over the years and getting worse.

Re: Name change
There are really only two scenarios where the Redskins name would change - - and both of them are based on economics.
Scenario #1: Someone - or some group - finds another angle on a lawsuit which results in the team being denied a trademark for the name or the logo or the colors or whatever. That would mean anyone and everyone could make and sell "Redskins stuff". That would eat into team profits in a huge way. If Scenario #1 happens, the Redskins will change their name. Probability of that happening is small - - but it is not impossible. Scenario #2: A time comes when a critical mass of people are so offended by the name that they can successfully organize a boycott of Redskins branded products. At that point, the team would want to change its name AND the NFL would urge the team to change its name quickly to avoid the possibility of similar boycotts being fomented against other teams. If Scenario #2 happens, the Redskins will change their name. Probability of that happening is very, very small. Absent those kinds of "environment-changing events" the Redskins' name will stay just the way it is... |
Re: Name change
Scenario #1 almost happened but the team won the appeal

Re: Name change
Matty:
Exactly. With that decision on the books, it is now going to be more difficult for another lawsuit to prevail against the precedent that is set by the original case. That is why I said the probability of Scenario #1 was small - - but not impossible. |
Re: Name change
Trademarks are just not words, they're wordmarks (text styles/logos)as well. This is how a team like the Lions, Eagles or Cowboys with more common words as team names can still trademark their name, or the WAY their name appears.
Someone could take a gray t-shirt and print "Cowboys" in cursive, not resembling the team wordmark at all and probably legally get away with selling it as long as they never call it a "Dallas Cowboys" shirt or use their logo. But, once they use or the team's star logo...violation. Make sense? This is the reason that the team's trademarks can never be taken away. They own and . The images and the specific usage of the name. |
Re: Name change
As for scenario #2...sure, we know the liberals can hire mobs to protest loudly for any chosen reason, but the fact is the FAR, FAR majority of actual Native Americans approve or aren't offended by the name, many feel honored. This will help us immensely.
It's not going to happen. Unlike the Bullets, we have a tremendous amount of tradition and longevity wrapped up in this identity. The backlash would be far greater than the petty protests of a few whiners trying to force their way on the majority. |
Re: Name change
If they changed the name what would happen to the "Hail to the Redskins" song? What about the band?
Hail to the Redskins Hail Vic-tor-y Braves on the Warpath Fight for old D.C. Run or pass and score -- we want a lot more! Beat 'em, Swamp 'em, Touchdown! -- Let the points soar! Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Fight!, Fight!, Fight! Hail to the Redskins Hail Vic-tor-y Braves on the Warpath Fight for old D.C. |

Re: Name change
Man I hope not. I think the name stays cause Ole Danny Boy loves the publicity and the fact that people are still talkin about us even though we are a mediocre team. Any publicity is good publicity. The name and logo are a big part of the history of the NFL.

First of all, welcome aboard. Secondly, you are absolutely right that the name is a big part of the history of the NFL. The logo has changed a few times, so the logo is not so big a deal. However, all publicity is not good publicity. Just ask the folks who run the archdiocese of Boston about how some publicity can be "not so good"... |
Re: Name change
What I meant was, Ole Danny Boy is an advertisement guy. So as long as people are talkin about the Skins he can use that as a selling tool. And thanks for the welcome.

A new lawsuit could be based on the April, 1999 ruling by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The lower courts are forcing the hand of the U.S. Supreme Court to make a ruling. Dan Snyder has open the door for a law suit because of his claim that the Washington Local Newspaper has used antisemitism in their article about him and his empire. |

Why not just call them what they were originally known as, the Braves. |
