The market will vindicate Clinton Portis.

I absolutely wish him the best if that happens. I hope the team can establish a deal that will work for both sides and he can stay.
BUT more than that I HOPE this teams days of paying millions for "what used to be" are behind them!

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

There will be a market for him, i'm sure. But strictly as a backup RB. Nobody on here can say with any seriousness that somebody is going to give him big bucks to start.

He'll be 30 when the season starts. And he has reached the "magic number" that RB's fall apart on. And he fell apart right before our eyes. And it was painful, and sad to watch all at the same time.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

Look for a news update soon, Fox news is saying that Mike Shanahan told them today that his release will be finalized within 24 hours.

Portis, on his official twitter has made comments of "The passion i had for the game just wasnt the same anymore after coach Gibbs retired.".

And he said "I look foreward to finding a new team without the drama of redskins park".

CP was being CP all the way to the end....

He made some good comments. It sounded to me like the skins gave him the chance to re-work his deal for less money, and he decided to go for the money.

He at least was honest with 106.7 the fan when he told them his passion for the game has not been the same since Joe Gibbs retired again. That speaks volumes when you think back to how his play seemed to drop off a cliff...it makes perfect sense that he wasnt playing with his heart in it, especially when all the major injuries started hampering him. He just couldnt play through the pain anymore. Injuries overtook him.

Good Luck Portis. All hard feelings i had for you in the past are gone now. Thank you for being honest with the fans about what really happened.

He has one year left in the NFL, IMO...I hope he goes out a winner.

ST's death definitely took some of the wind out of his sails as well.

His first year under Zorn in '08 wasn't too shabby though, 342-1487-9

It's only been the last 2 years injuries have really caught up to him, starting with the concussion in '09.

I wouldn't be shocked at all if CP retired. He's made mountains of cash as a Redskin, and he's publicly saying he's not into football like he used to be. There have been star RBs (Shaun Alexander comes to mind) who have gone from great to out of the league in a matter of a few seasons.

CP can't seem to stay healthy anymore, he's on the wrong side of 30, and has a ton of mileage. He's not gonna get a big pay day from anyone. I could honestly see him hanging it up.

MTK 02-28-2011 12:59 PM

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

He could retire... depends on what his expectations are. He's simply not going to find a starting job in this league carrying the ball 20 times a game. If he's ok with being a role player at a decent $$, I'm sure he can find work.

Shaun Alexander was the guy who shocked me the most with how he ended up out of the NFL.

The guy was a beast in Seattle, and even though he had that 1 injury year, i felt for sure he would be back in the NFL. When we got him for that 1 season, i was shocked at how bad he looked. Its like his career ended overnight. And it did, in hindsight.

saden1 02-28-2011 01:20 PM

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

Yeah, Clinton Portis is no Shaun Alexander. He will get to play and get at least 10 to 15 carries a game...sorta like LT did with the Jets.

re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

If he's no longer going to be a Skin, I'd prefer he retires for selfish reasons. He's been my favorite Redskin since he joined the team and busted off that long TD on his first-ever run vs. the Bucs. He's the only current player jersey I own too.

For his salary that he's used to, he's not finding a job from a sane team. Al Davis is set at the RB position.

I really think he could make a good 3rd-down and blocking back for us for another season or even two if the limited play can help his health. He looked GREAT last season before his groin tear, even running the ball.

Then again, he could pull another Tomlinson and go take over the starter gig when everyone said he was washed up and broken-down and nothing more than a backup now.

A lot of people (here too) are really trashing him as a horrible player and think he should be out of football. As Redskins fans, we should really appreciate what he's done in B&G. He's only a few yards behind the lehendary John Riggins as the top Redskins rusher of all time. He's 26th all time in league history at just shy of 10,000 yards, ahead of Earl Campbell, Jim Taylor, Herschel Walker, Jim Taylor, Roger Craig, Larry Csonka and other great RBs. He DID have some big plays for us. He even threw for 3 TDs. CP has been the BEST blocking back in the game in addition to being a more-than-capable runner. For years, he was all the offense had, being run into the ground with 300+ carries annually, especially under Gibbs. He topped 1500 AP yards 4 times as a Redskin. His career total is 11,941 yards from scrimmage. He's in the HOF discussion.

I dont get why people hate on Portis. Yes there were some negatives, such as not practicing(nothing compared to Riggo's negatives), but he overall did some amazing things for us.

One of my favorite Skins.

I like CP, but he brought a lot of criticism on his self by talking too much & throwing some people under the bus, including his head coach - Zorn. Even that latest interview w/106.7 he said something like it would be good to go somewhere where it isn't "Portis,Portis,Portis..." But he brought all that attention to himself.

Again, I like him & actually hope he can come back as a 3rd down back, I just don't see it happening given the way these things usually go. He sounds like he wants to move on anyway.

Portis was awesome, good memories and solid back. Out of the players who may still stand a chance to be back next year, I think Clinton stands a better chance than Fat A$$ Peice of Sh*t and McNabb. I could see him taking less money and returning.

Hope you're right, and MS kept open the possibility. I hope for CP's sake that it doesn't become an Art Monk situation, where he could've stayed for less $, then tests the market to find out there's little interest, asks to come back at reduced salary but by then there is no roster spot.

SolidSnake84 02-28-2011 02:50 PM

Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)

I dont think he will be back. My gut tells me that he will sign on with a team that offers a low salary but with good incentives for playing time.

His comments in the past couple days and even today indicate that he does not want to be here due to alot of things, and he wants to go somewhere where he can be just a regular player without all of the drama and crap elements that are Redskins Park.

Again, no animosity anymore from me towards CP. Good luck Clinton and if he decides to retire, we have great memories to remember him for. Way more good memories than bad.

CP brought it every game. You can't deny that. He be remembered for some great years here. Kindof a crazy dude, but that's refreshing sometimes.

I saw a blog post at another site, ask the question..Now that CP may be gone, should the Skins have traded Champ Bailey? It kind of pi**** me off. That was along time ago. CP is the 2nd highest rush leader in Skins history...give it up. He had a pretty good run here. It's time to move on.

His final radio interview. He explains his mindset as to why he still insists he's a No.1 back. He says he realizes that the NFL is a 2 back system, but he will never accept that he's a No. 2 back. At least he's honest.

I mean really, when do you hear about an athlete who is cut, or forced to retire, and they say "Well, i just dont have it anymore".

They always say "I'm better than i ever was". Or, "I feel like i'm still in my prime", or for NFL players, they always say "I've got good football left in me".

Portis is just not gonna come out and say "Well folks, my body is wore out, i just can't handle the load anymore". He's gotta try and sell himself for 1 more season.

The only chance he has of becoming a no. 1 back is to sell himself as a no. 2, and emerge as a no. 1. Honestly, I don't know any team that would give him starting money.

He's not coming back here. It's time to turn the page people. You could hear it in his voice. No way he comes back to a below average team. I think it's over for the guy. He had a pretty good career.

I have the most awful feeling that he's gonna be a live camp body, and look good somewhere in drills and stuff, but then end up like Larry Johnson. LJ tore it up here in practice and in OTA's, but when he got onto the field for gametime, he didnt have it anymore.

I think Portis eventually ends up in New England as their nominal no. 1 back. But he'll be spitting with Green-Ellis, Woodhead, and Morris, so he'll be starting in name only.

def goes down as one of my favorite Redskins of all time ... in a rough patch of years for the Skins' he was really a shining light ... hell of a blocker, probably the best blocking RB i've ever seen .... HTTR .. Good Luck Clinton
