Even better. Don't resign him...lol |
Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
^ SS listed Golston as "maybe" one of the players we resign soon.....
I guess the locks for DL are: Carriker Jenkins Cofield Maybe Golston and then Anthony Bryant, Holliday, Jarmon, Neild and Haynesworths. In that order is my guess. If we add a true NT things could really get shaken up! |
Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
As I've said earlier, this is the move I wanted more than any other. I think it will be great. He is reasonably talented, will fill our much needed NT, we take him from the giants, and most importantly he is young.
Also I don't think his contract is unreasonable. I think of it as the same as Andre Carter's 6 year 30 mil contract he got 5 years ago. Salary cap goes up, so does the salaries. Hopefully he can contribute like Carter, and not some other players signed that year. edit: and for the record, I want Chris Chester next on the list. I think young guys that have shown they can hold their own should be our priority. Cullen Jenkins is my one execption to this rule. But that's only because I believe he will help us transition properly to the 3-4, be able to tell haslett the way things were done in GB, provide leadership in the lockeroom which will hopefully help change the culture of the redsinks for years to come. The culture of a team I feel is important, and I feel ours needs to be changed. I'd honestly hope that we'd trade Chris Cooley (and start Davis) if not for his locker room influence. We need veterans like Chris to help change our culture, we need everyone to be on board with the coaches. For the record, Orakpo IMO has displayed this more than anyone and I will enjoy watching him develop into a leader on our team. |

Much like the Kerrigan pick, this makes our front 4 on passing downs very strong and able to generate a pass rush without blitzing help. Rak - RDE, Cofield - 1-tech, Carriker/Jarmon/J. Jenkins - 3-tech, Kerrigan - LDE Cofield plays a lot of 1-tech so if we move to more of an attacking 3-4 he's a very good fit to play NT. If we stay in the 2-gap 3-4 he'll probably play DE with Bryant/Neild/tbd platooning at NT. Great signing. |

Carriker Bryant Jenkins (J) Coefield Gregg/Neild Jenkins (C) |

I like this move. He's an upgrade over anyone we currently have on the DL.

I agree but hopefully they'll put the guy in good positions to get after the QB. But if they put him at NT then terrible move. Cofield is not a NT. |

Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield

I think he means younger AND cheaper. The giants apparantly have guys they think will fill in well that are still in their rookie contracts. Not that Cofield is old, but the giants just have other priorities of where to spend their money, and would prefer to replace cofield with young/cheep talent and spend the money elsewhere. In general the Giants do seem to be getting younger, of course not 100% of their moves will reflect that (like when I believe they will give Osi a big contract). |
Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
The man is a player that will be able to provide depth at DE and NT and be used acrossed the D-Line. We needed GOOD depth at both badly. Plus he is still only 27 years old. Im glad he is on our side, and not going against twice a year. Plus he sounds like a team player. We are building a team full of good guys and guys that I will be proud to call Redskins. If we can get another 6th rounder from Haynesworth from an AFC team I would be pumped. Skins are on the right path. Hail!!!

Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
Versatility as everyone has said. I think our defense in general will be giving a lot of different "looks" to opposing QB.
Landry in the box, Rak coming off the edge, Rak rushing from a standing position. I think we're going to do it all this year. I also like the fact the Cofield gets to stay in the East. He's familiar with Philly, Dallas, and obvi the Giants' offense. So that's a huge plus, especially as the division tightens up down the stretch, which we know it will. I think Shanny is basically saying to Haynesworth, if you're gonna stay you're gonna have to compete your way onto the field. No head games, just bust your ass and earn it. |

While the 3-4 defense does a good job at confusing offense, fundamentally a team needs to have a solid NT that can take on blockers and push the the center, and DEs to control the running backs and keep blockers from the rushing OLBs. I think in Carriker and Cofield, we'll have two solid DEs for the defense. Cullen Jenkins could probably play better NT than Cofield, an given his experience on a 3-4 defense would be helpful. |
Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
This is a signing with some upside, and I would have been ecstatic under similar conditions just two years ago. But if you take Barry Cofield and if you plug and play in our current defensive philosophy (or even an adjusted philosophy run by the same people), you're going to get a guy who isn't anything near worth what we paid to get him.
Basically, the people who knew Cofield best opted not to make an offer remotely competitive to ours. Which is not to say that we, who know him quite well from playing him for five years, don't have a plan for bringing him in, but if we know anything about our team's plans on the defensive side of the ball, it's that most gambles typically just don't work. |

He'll be the elephant in the room yet again. He's the highest paid guy on the team and has been the most disappointing by far. Had Haynesworth lived up to his contract the past two years, I'm not sure the Redskins invest this much up front. It seems to me, the Redskins are planning on life without Mr. Haynesworth's services in the event he's his usual honory self. |

As for the move to a 3-4 defense, McCartney indicated it wasn't anything that scared Cofield. "The thing about Barry is he played (nose tackle) in college and he's a big-body guy, so he's one of the few interior guys who can go either inside or outside. He has some versatility," said McCartney, a former director of personnel for the Eagles. "The one thing he hasn't had a chance to do a lot of is get up the field, and I think the Redskins' coaches did a good job of saying, 'We're going to utilize you in a variety of ways.'" |

Well but the Redskins got into this mess. Why make such a high investment in such a low character guy with a coach that was not in a stable situation? In the end, whether Haynesworth had worked or not, this team is notorious for putting square pegs in round holes. And part of this switch to the 3-4 means getting players that have both experience in playing the defense and/or are versatile enough to adjust to the new scheme. My personal preference is a mix of the two. Cofield can excel as a 3-4 DE, and while he may do well as a 3-4 NT, personally I think it'd be a bit of a waste. The discussion is first and foremost on how players fit into scheme, and some fans like me hoping that the team uses new acquisitions to the best of their ability. Let's look at the Ravens, Ngata is a beast and can play at any position along the d-line. But he's not their NT, they play him mostly at DE. They had Kelly Gregg as their NT, and then they drafted T. Cody to be their NT of the future. That to me is using your player to the best of their ability. The reason people will continue to bring Haynesworth is because they want to b*tch about him. |

cofield's a baller, i remember seeing him in the SB just destroying people... very happy with this, didn't know we were seriously considering him, but yay!

The thing is the Giants are a team that puts a lot of importance in their front 7. More than we do. This guy played well for them. He's going to be a good player for us.
