I don't like this move. Looks like training camp fodder. He was out of football last year. Relatively old for a wide receiver and slow. Looks like another Larry Johnson, Shawn Alexander or Joey Galloway signing.

He was with the Ravens last year. He's only 30 years old.

He's 30, not 33. He's just a camp body for now.

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

I don't get this move at all. Stallworth has pretty much been an underachiever his whole career. I know it's low risk but get the young guys on the field. Who cares if they make mistakes? Does MS realize that this isn't a playoff team?

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

It's cool man, as for Stallworth? I don't see him making the team. AA is better and Moss and Hank will be here obviously. Plus I still see another WR signing coming

Speed deep threat not a bad choice for a competition

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

Stallworth is another shining example of the [possibly foolish] "dual mandate" the FO is operating in. They're probably hoping he can play good special teams and be ok should the injury bug strikes. Hopefully, he gets cut unless his competition(Paul, Robinson, Kelly) proves themselves utterly incapable of contributing.

It's a 1-year deal for depth, don't make any more of it than it is.

I don't have a problem with the signing, there's no risk or damage done by it. In fact, I am glad they did not spend a lot on a WR because it's really not a big need, we are deep at WR.

Stallworth may not even make the team....don't get your panties in a knot and pile on with the media saying "Redskins are so stupid....durrrrrrr".

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

How much communication between team leaders and the FO is there? We drafted 3 WRs, signed moss, have AA, and are looking for a big time WR in FA. Signing Stallworth as a camp body seems unusual in my mind unless we pitched to him that he could very well make the team, which seems unlikely for us to do unless we believed it considering it would be pointless to lie, and it would create poor trust among agents. How many of our rookie WRs showed up at our team practices? Is it possible that it has been reported to the FO that one or more of our rookies simply aren't preforming?

I don't think the coaches would put much stock in what happened at those organized player practices. That wouldn't even be fair. The coaches want to see these guys up close and personal and have the chance to coach them up before they would write them off.

This is a pretty harmless move in my opinion. Let's not Chris Wilson it (who amazingly is becoming one of the more tenured Redskins it seems)

The fact it's a 1 year deal tells you everything you need to know. He knows, we know, coaches know, and his agent knows that this is basically a tryout.

Also, you have 3 rookie WRs, not many rooks perform well as WR in that first year.

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

They need(ed) to address the OL, CB, and QB situation (in the draft). Now it appears to be too late. Did they think it would be possible to address these issues with FAs? They'll probably sign McGahee...

Too bad you can't sign a monthly contract. LOL

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

I don't see harm in this versus something like the Moss deal. This is the Redskins bringing in a player that no one else really wanted.

This is the kind of deal that gets made in mid-June without a lockout, but now seems bigger than it is because it's being announced before the official start of free agency.

Stallworth probably looked at the situation and said other than Moss they have no consistent WR's why not go there.

Guaranteed Roster Spots
Moss
Hankerson
Armstrong

Fighting for the other 3 spots:
Stallworth
Gaffney
Robinson
Paul
Austin
Banks
Kelly

As of now we have 7 receivers fighting for 3 spots. I hope Robinson makes the team, I like everything I've read/watched about him so far.

Moss would be a costly eat, but if he's drastically outplayed by either Stallworth or Gaffney, you can only keep so many veterans.

I wouldn't pencil in Armstrong quite yet. Moss and Hankerson are the only two I feel are locks to make the squad.

GTripp0012 07-27-2011 03:07 PM

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

With potentially 11+ receivers around, Hankerson is the only lock.

Moss' contract is basically Larry Johnson's contract.

MTK 07-27-2011 03:08 PM

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

Well, they're not going to cut Moss after just re-signing him. Plus when you consider his experience and production in this offense I'd say he's the only true lock.

LOL .. how can you say LJ's contract is "basically" like Moss' ... wake up people we re-signed him because he #1. wanted to be here #2. works his ass off #3. is productive #4. knows the system #5. with talent around he can finally shine .. i'd say if we have anybody to throw the ball to him Moss may have one of his better seasons in years

I'd have to pick Gaffney, Austin and Banks. Banks makes it because we need a returner and Paul/Robinson, the challengers to Banks in the return game, won't make the cut.

Last I checked, he signed a 3 yr/ 3.5 million contract with incentives that could bring up the total to 12 mil. Not sure where you get he was guaranteed 3 mil.
Johnson signed a three-year, $3.5 million contract with Washington back in March. The deal also included up to $6.75 million in incentives. His contract did not include a signing bonus.

He definitely was paid his entire 2010 season salary for two weeks of work, per the 2006 collective bargaining agreement.

Agreed. Assuming Edwards is signed, I think you have Moss, Edwards and Hankerson as locks and then 8 guys fighting for 3 spots.

At the same time, GTripp may have a point, perhaps Gaffney and Stallworth are here only to compete with Moss for a spot - it may be that they make the team only if they drastically outperform Moss.

Then you have the younger guys: Anderson, Paul, Austin, Robinson, Banks and Kelly competing for the remaining 3 or 4 (if they don't sign Edwards) slots.

Re: Redskins sign WR Donte’ Stallworth to a 1 year deal

^ Possibly, Gaffney plays slot like Moss will, but he's too good to cut outright.

Still early in FA...who knows, we could flip one of these guys in another trade?

Seriously doubt Moss is cut (but then again, I'm not exactly batting a thousand these last couple of days).

Can't really compare LJ to Moss. Putting aside Moss' history with the franchise, there's a big difference between Torain and Williams having four months to move WP and LJ out the way; and Stallworth and Gaffney (and the others) having four weeks.

Brady threw to him in the slot Pre-Welker and he did play there with Denver at times.

I would be EXTREMELY disappointed if Armstrong did not make the team this year. He was on our team last year, was successful, and does all of the right things, he deserves to be on the team again.

I think he is a lock. If he were to get cut he would get swooped up very quickly by some other team.
