Re: Redskins sign QB Kellen Clemens
To me, this signing says more about the Redskins plan to rebuild the QB position than it does about Kellen Clemens. Kellen Clemens, Matt Leinart, and John Beck all have something in common. They were all top two round picks. They all had really good predictive college statistics. They all can be acquired at bargain basement prices (I think Leinart is not coming here because there's actually a market for him).

Basically, the Shanahan's are making a bet that the market missed on a QB drafted between 2006-2008 and they can find him
Agreed. I'd rather have Clemens, Beck, Leinart under C in 2011 than any QB that was drafted this year.

To all those that are complaining about our QB situation....There is no franchise QB ripe on the franchise QB tree at Redskins Park. We gambled on McNabb, it didn't pan out. We're going to have a journeyman QB unless one of these guys steps up or we get one in the 2012 draft. Be patient, like it or not, we're rebuilding. There aren't any other options at QB out there that don't break the bank or require multiple top draft picks to get.

Good!

I'm not against Orton. I am however against trading any picks for Orton. You'd think with the events of last year, you'd realize that's not the right route to go. It rarely ever is.

"NFL Network's Michelle Beisner reports trade talks between the Broncos and Dolphins are getting "serious," and a deal could be reached within six hours.
Just minutes before, the Miami Herald reported that Orton remained interested in restructuring to stay in Denver, which hardly seems credible. Orton isn't going to accept the long-term No. 2 job behind Tim Tebow when he could land a starting gig elsewhere. Expect to see Orton to the Dolphins in exchange for something in the neighborhood of a third-round pick. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports both teams "would like" to make the Orton trade happen."

Well this is best chance Clipboard Jesus has had to become a starter. We'll see if he can beat out Leinart or TJax.

That's his middle name, but it also happens to be her last name. My guess it's by design. :)

lol...wut?

You'd think he'd jump at the opportunity to potentially play elsewhere?

JoeRedskin 07-27-2011 02:01 PM

Re: Redskins sign QB Kellen Clemens

^^ Interesting. Why is Houston hot to keep him? And why would he stay there when he has a chance at starting in either Seattle or Washington? I thought Shaub was entrenched and that either we or Seattle would pay more.

SmootSmack 07-27-2011 02:08 PM

Re: Redskins sign QB Kellen Clemens

Well, I think he appreciates what Houston did for him last year, and with Houston he's perhaps one injury away from starting whereas he and Seattle he may be two. I never really thought Seattle was a serious choice for him, but apparently it was, I did think he'd give serious consideration to the Redskins. But maybe we didn't extend the same courtesy to him.

Basically, the Shanahan's are making a bet that the market missed on a QB drafted between 2006-2008 and they can find him. They're probably right on the first clause: probability alone suggests that NFL types probably missed on Leinart OR Clemens OR Quinn OR Beck OR Nate Davis. But obviously, they didn't miss on all of them.
And personally, the one guy in that group who seems like he has the least upside is Beck. But at least, I believe, the intentions are in the right place.
How is that obvious? You may be correct but it is also possible that all of them are mediocre at their very best...

Also, even if only one of them is going to turn out to be "more than just decent" as a QB, that would give a team - - like the Skins - - only a 20% chance of picking the one that will turn out well.

Clemens will not embarrass a team as a back-up QB. However, if he is the guy who wins the QB competition and the guy you start the season with, the team's fortunes look bleak

Re: Redskins sign QB Kellen Clemens

I'm a little confused on the signing of Clemens, who has been a career-back up thus far in the NFL. That leaves us with John Beck, also a backup, and Rex Grossman, who is now the only proven NFL starter on our QB chart.

I want to ask the veteran members here why the Redskins didnt go after a starting caliber Free Agent QB? Someone like Matt Hasselbeck, or Marc Bulger? I think Bulger is finished but he has tons of starting expereince, and I could see him lasting here for one year while we prepare for the future.

Is the answer just as simple as Mike Shanahan beleives that he can win with these guys? Does this make Rex the favorite to start??
