springs is a true #1 and was great for us until he started missing games.

Green Bailey Jimoh Dishman Springs I think DHall is tremendously overrated. He is a gambler and is exceptional at reading plays but no one can tell me that they would want him to shadow a #1 WR all game. When was the last time he shadowed a solid WR and took him out of the game? He hasn't done it in a skins uniform so no freaking way he is on my list. Springs had some battles with TO one on one and won a few of them. He was the last guy we had that could shadow a WR leave him on an island. |

I would say that Hall excels in our new defensive scheme. I'm also excited about Wilson and I think between the two of them. We will have a lot of turnovers this year. |

Unfortunately this topic will come up as long as there are people that don't like Hall as a person and b*tch about him every single possible time and those that get all geeked up about his picks and call him the best ever. As I said, here in the Warpath opinions tend to go to the extreme. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
I am not sure if all time Redskin great is an appropriate word RIGHT NOW. This is his 2nd, 3rd season with us. He is a good corner, but I am not sure he stands out as one of the greats. His completion % against is pretty high, Carlos had better cover numbers. What he does do is bring the ability to gamble and make plays. He doesn't have the ability like a Dieon Sanders to make up for the mistakes. If dieon gambled, he got back into the play with just his pure speed. WHen Hall makes a mistake, it leads to big plays. I think I go
Green, Bailey, Springs. Not sure where Hall would fall in Redskins greats though. I am sure there were probably some guys from earlier years that may have made a bigger contribution to the team, I just can't remember them. |

Surprised to see a lot of Dishman mentions, he was great in Houston but barely a shell if that here. By the same token...no mention of Vernon Dean?

Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
U gotta admitt Tripp that Hall has played some of his best ball here in DC. Is Hall in the top 5 CB all time in DC? I think he has to do a little more to be considered. But he contributed a couple unforgettable moments as a skin...The dallas strip, the J Cutler game and probowl MVP are significant moments. Kinda wish people would celebrate it and not try to bring the guy down.
He's made a number of really good plays while he's been here. The play in the first quarter against Baltimore was another really good play. I'm not going to remember him here for his individual great moments, which is a shame, because even guys who had short careers like Antonio Pierce, Lemar Marshall, and Ryan Clark all had a number of great moments here before signing elsewhere.
I'd point out that plenty of people have shown an excellent ability to forget Hall's most embarrassing plays as a Redskin, because it simply doesn't match up with their perception of him as a player. Sequences like the Baltimore TD-XP one are also pretty noticeable and unforgettable. But I guess it's easy to just pretend it never happened. |

Funny stuff man.. Fred Smoot wasn't even a #1 or #2 CB, but he did manage to pop the roster in that spot because of the lackluster talent we had at this position for such a long time
Oh, you don't say? That's how plenty of people feel about Hall. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Maybe I need to go back an watch this extra point. Because I don't remember it being so awful that I was like "damn where the hell is seal team 6 to off this mofo! Shit's got to end now or America will never be safe"

A player on the defensive team though? I think you're looking the other way because of who the player is. And I think a lot of people are doing the same thing. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Or maybe you're looking one way because of who the player is. I mean really, worse than anything Haynesworth ever did? Don't accuse others of letting personal feelings cloud their judgment while acting like it never clouds yours. We know you're better than that.

Or Martin Mayhew who was solid and left via FA. |

Look, you have a weekly thread about things the Redskins can improve on, etc. I thought you brought up some good points. But you omitted (actually defended) Hall in the OP. So I added him. Then a big discussion ensued because I said Haynesworth in a post. My bad. I was going to start a "the Redskins should release DeAngelo Hall thread" that would have been based on only a rational response to what happened in the game on Thursday and his value to the team going forward. I opted against it because I know how all D-Hall threads ends up. See above. People like you pretend his weaknesses on the field are some sort of necessary evil that we just need to deal with and people like me try to argue stuff like "DeAngelo Hall really isn't that much of a playmaker to begin with." I'm open to the idea that the answer is probably in the middle. But the culture of ignoring bad plays that DeAngelo Hall makes simply because of the man that makes them is not something that I need to honor in the name of being unbiased. It's actually quite the opposite. I was not ever intending to compare Haynesworth off the field to Hall off the field. After work hours, it's not even a comparison. There is enough evidence to believe Albert isn't a good person off the field. I don't hear anything about Hall getting into trouble. That's why Haynesworth-Hall comparisons are unfair, it has nothing to do with on field play. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Well I'm about to board a plane so I dont have time (nor desire) to get into it. But a) I did suggest this offseason that trading Hall should be considered. At least I think I did. And I wasn't exactly defending Hall. I said I love that he makes plays for us. My favorite play in football happens to be a pick 6, so when one of our players does it I happen to love it. At the sane time though, his aggressive style is not all that helpful if there's no steady hand on the other side of the field. Either Hall has to be more disciplined or Barnes,Wilson, or Buch has to be more reliable. Right now, in my opinion, our secondary is our biggest weakness.
As for this thread. He's not top 5. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Sammy Baugh wasnt much of a slouch at DB either, from what I've heard

Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
I love, love, love, when defenses score touchdowns. That was my big criticism of Blache's defense. When Hall ran in the TD to end the first half against Dallas, I was crazy-excited. We hadn't seen that play since 2007, when big-play Carlos Rogers picked off Jon Kitna and ran it back for the TD. When Hall did it again in Week 7 and totally changed the game, that was really cool. When he did it to Flacco on Thursday, that was also really cool. No one can possibly complain about Hall when he's running back an INT: he's probably going to score.
I agree with what Smoot wrote on Thursday night about the secondary being the team's biggest weakness. That was mostly true in 2009 and 2010 as well, with the only exception being that our offense was so weak during those seasons that as bad as our secondary was, we had worse units on the other side of the ball. It's been weak back there ever since we cut Springs to give Hall a monster deal. Would Springs still be a major contributor on our 2011 team had we not cut him for Hall? No, of course not. We had to get younger sometime. But now that the other shoe (Rogers) has dropped, and we brought in a player stylistically similar (though, IMO, better) than Hall in Josh Wilson, I think we've completed a large downgrade on the outside that took three years to complete: we took our corners from a team strength under Grilliams to a team weakness under Haslett. And we're actually paying out more at the position now than we were before. And I just don't think you can scheme around having a bottom ten pass defense with creative blitz packages. At some point, the secondary just has to get better. |

Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Gtripp, I agree with u that both Wilson and hall having similar playing styles-- which can create problems when opposing offenses attack deep because theres only one free safety that can help over top. But I still think that there's a chance that this defense can be successful despite that. There needed to be changes from the bend but don't break philosophy of past redskins d to hasletts philosophy. And part of that was letting go players like Rogers.
And the play with Evans burning hall- hall still had good coverage on Evans. It was just a problem because if hall knew he wasn't going to have safety help - he NEEDS to jam the receiver at the line. |

Your idea of "good" and my idea of good are completely different. http://www.thewarpath.net/redskins-locker-room/41838-football-outsiders-worst-rated-cbs-nfl.html D. Hall continues to write checks with his mouth that his play doesn't back up. |

Currently with what's available to us. Yes. I wouldn't be surprised if CB isn't a issue addressed next draft in the higher rounds. |

Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
Well Green played a lot of years, so there was more than one corner playing opposite him.

I'm pretty sure it was Vernon Dean (San Diego State) that played opposite Green.

And the play with Evans burning hall- hall still had good coverage on Evans. It was just a problem because if hall knew he wasn't going to have safety help - he NEEDS to jam the receiver at the line.
Well, we certainly expect to improve our run defense over last year, given acceptable linebacker play, and Ryan Kerrigan gives a second legitimate pass rushing threat. So it's not all bad. Haslett's philosophy is that getting pressure on the quarterback can lead to big time plays if you have the right guys on the field. Are Josh Wilson, DeAngelo Hall, OJ Atogwe, and LaRon Landry the right guys to have on the field? Well, if the pass pressure takes as long to get home as it did last year, there's not much range out there and every one of them is a hard biter on double moves. Plus, those shorter passes are going to be there regardless of the down. Basically, I think the defense has to excel on first and second down so that this group can drive on routes in third and long. A big problem last year was that we weren't good in standard downs, not to mention passing downs. We're still not going to be very good on passing downs. However, the longer the opponent has to go, the better Wilson, Hall, and Atogwe will look out there in coverage. Can we stop a 3rd & 4 with those guys on the outside? Probably not against most opponents. The Redskins have no schematic solution if teams want to spread them out and isolate poorer cover players. And with the Patriots, Cardinals, Bills, Rams, Seahawks, and Eagles on the schedule, I think the pass D could be in for a long year compared to the run D. |

Cant wait for the haters to be exposed.
Ill make sure a revive this thread at Week 9. |
Re: Where does D. Hall rate as a CB for the Redskins all time?
I think D hall has some good, bad and ugly to him.
Good in that he takes chances trying to jump routes, bad in that it leads to him being burnt on double moves, etc. Good in that he will try and bait QBs into throwing his way so he can step in front but bad in that he will play off the guy and give up more receptions than if he just tried to blanket the reciever. Even his attitude is a double sided coin to me. Good in that i think he gives it his all for the B&G, but bad in that he causes unnecessary trouble and extra stuff on the field. He is what he is to me, love him when he takes one for 6, hate it when he gives up 6+ receptions in a game trying to get that one pick 6. |
