re: New Orleans Saints/Washington Redskins: Bounty Hunters

I doubt they will take a 1st rounder, but I can see hefty fines for everyone involved, incuding Gregg Williams, suspensions of 1 or 2 games for active players and coaches, and maybe a 2nd round pick forfeited, but not a first rounder. I dunno though, Goddell does like to set an example, and has no quarrels with punishing severely without precedent.

Maybe Brees won't want to resign with the "dirty saints". Benson, Payton, Williams and Loomis all should be suspended and draft picks taken away for this kind of bullshit. Williams is a jackass.

According to the Washington Post, Gregg Williams was the master of the same bounty operation when he was the Redskins Assistant Head Coach Defense from 2004-2007.

What a dumb ass. Great thanks Williams. Probably will cost us a shot at RG3. Woohoo.

Oh that's right, we got the Stoners..
Oh we did, they did, Packers did, etc. It's called football, not fairyball. I'm glad to hear teams still go out and punish other players lining up against them. I want to see Romo decapitated, I want to see Eli catch a high-low combo. Goodell can put the good foot forward, and have a nice pretty PR face about player safty, but I'm glad to hear that the players are still playing hard nosed football.

:soapbox:

NFL32 people including schefter were saying that the Redskins have been linked, like you all have said. I don't see us gettting punished for what happened 5+ years ago, with players that are mostly out of the league. The only guys that are still here are London and Rocky (who currently aren't under contract), DHall, Landry.

GW's defenses sent a lot of people to IR after playing us while he was here, so i'm not shocked, but is it really worth throwing cash in when it's only 1k here or 2k there for guys that many 100 times that every week?
I'd be willing to bet that this still goes on around the league. I have no problem with it. Trying to knock out the other teams best player has been around since the start of football. Again, as long as the hits are legal, and the ones against Farve and Warner were legal, then I have no problem with it. Of course Mr. Stiff Suit himself (Roger G.) is going to think differently.
The hits on Favre weren't legal

Philip Daniels is on record saying he received $1,500 for a game vs Dallas in 2005 and some bonuses were up to $8,000. Only player I can possibly imagine getting that kind of money would be Sean Taylor.

FWIW, I get the sense that Brees would like to run for office in New Orleans after football. He's been very clear that he and his wife are committed to the city, if not the team, for the long haul and plans on being there.

Well, to be fair I updated the thread title. Williams not only made no attempt to deny it, he apologized for it and said he knew it was wrong when he was doing it. Yikes.

Sean Payton knew about it NO, but I've gotta believe that Gibbs didn't know about it here.

Yeah, I mean according to the WaPo article, he was encouraging players to go out there and land what he called "kill shots" on opponents. That's not ok.

There were a lot of things Williams kept from Gibbs, which was one reason Snyder was always kind of suspicious of him. I'm guessing this was one if them

On the other hand, Gibbs had to have some idea of Williams' way since he was essentially a Buddy Ryan clone, one of the few people Gibbs legitimately could not stand

Anytime you have a bounty for big hits, it's likely to lead to late hits, intent to injure hits, etc. That's why no kind of bounty system is legal, because the league knows it's going to lead to problems even if it wasn't technically calling for players to injure others.

For all the people who post "I have no problem with it" or whatever, it's against the rules. Coaches and players don't get to decide which rules they want to follow and which they don't.

Good thing you're not the type to overreact. In cases like this, especially 5 years removed, they may dock us a 6th round pick, nothing higher than a 5th. Probably a $50,000-$150,000 fine if anything.

Well I think you might be suprised. It still may cast enough doubt that the Rams say we cant risk trading with you.

Re: New Orleans Saints/Washington Redskins: Bounty Hunters

They were talking about this on SiriusXM NFL Radio this afternoon. They interviewed several former players who basically admitted that this is a wide-spread thing across the league and has been for a long time. However, the difference is it is usually done as a player-only funded and involved thing as a motivator in games. Not with the purpose of putting someone on a stretcher, end their career, etc. But to make a good, legal hit. A lot of it directed toward special teams play in particular. I can see something like this going on all the time in the league. The way it sounded like Gregg Williams ran it, however, seems like a different case. This definitely puts a twist on things. I hope he doesn't drag down the Skins organization with him.

Explain to me how the Saints get nailed and no one is saying anything about Gregg getting penalized now? Or could he be suspended while with the Rams? It always rubbed me the wrong way that Pete Carroll never got any penalties for what happened at USC. Sweatervest Boy at Ohio State got penalized before he could do anything with the Colts.

That's too bad, ironically, GW was about the main reason Gibbs won 10 games twice. Maybe Gibbs should have paid our players for TD's those years. I kid...

The Saints should be punished by having to trade Breesus for John Beck.

what are you talking about. Drew Brees is too short, and he only ran a 4.7 at his combine. Are you crazy!!!???????
And he was a 2nd rounder. Everyone knows good QBs can only be had with the first or second picks.

Just read across the ESPN news crawl that the bounty hunting has been confirmed with the Redskins from 2004-2007. This is all we need right now. Bet Danny is livid. Probably need to distance ourselves from this crap, this is all we need right now....plus Williams has issued a statement and apology for doing it and continuing to do it after he was told to stop....god damn it...

Dirtbag59 03-02-2012 08:43 PM

Re: New Orleans Saints/Washington Redskins: Bounty Hunters

So if I'm understanding this right is the reason the Saints are in trouble due to the fact that they were caught back in 2009, asked to stop, then continued doing it?
