As Matty stated, Shanahan isn't going to drop that kind of coin on a guard. Same thing with Meyers (C) in that we aren't going to give a interior OL a 8mil/year contract.
Too bad there isnt a RT to give that coin too. Because there lies the biggest need along the Oline, and now with 2nd gone and our 1st round decided and the bums in FA at Tackle, dont expect much improvement. Hopefully Round 3 the Tackle from California is still available or we can move into the back into the second.
As a free agent pickup at wide receiver, who would you guys rather have, Mario Manningham, Pierre Garcon, Vincent Jackson, or Marcus Colston? Reports have already surfaced that Mike Shanahan is going after Manningham.
yeah lets talk about the same receivers we've talked about for the last 2 months in another thread, and lets make it O-line thread.

Good observation, however we need to have good interior protection. I don't think we should pay Nicks a boat load of money, but we should invest to get a guard in case Kory L. Has trouble coming back from his injury.

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft

I'm amazed that people are wanting Garcon and Manningham. I have no desire for two average NFL wr's. We already have guys in Stallworth and Gafney that are just as good as those guys are. WR's don't win games in the NFL.

At this point Shanahan shouldn't be the decision maker. He's proven he isn't capable. If I were Snyder, I'd tell him to shut up and coach the team and leave the personel to the front office. We need to bolster the O-line if we're going to be starting a rookie.

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft

There's no value with the free agent receivers. Even Morgan is going to get a ton of money.

There's enough bargains out there where if we wait until April, you can get a good receiver off FA for less than $2 million (Braylon Edwards, Chaz Schilens, Early Doucet, Jerome Simpson) on a one year show me deal, and I think we should. It would make a ton more sense than bringing Stallworth back. But big money for any of these FA receivers is a bad idea.

The draft is/was far more promising. And the trade market is intriguing because it's a buyer's market.

So much for keeping this an o-line only thread

Anyway, back to the subject of the thread. What is the deal with McNeil, one moment he's a top LT in the league and the next he's being cut. Does he have health issues or something. I would like for the Skins to shore up the RT position and not roll the dice with J. Brown again.

My bad, OL I think we'll go after Briesel the guard from the texans.

Since March FA is so thin at OT, maybe we can find a FA right tackle after the June 1 round of cuts.

Pretty much, I was gonna go back and bump a random Hanyesworth thread and just open with "which WR free agent should we get Legudu Naane or Eric Weems?"

I think the market have a load of injury prone, vetern tackles, but that doesnt really solve our problem. Just dont overpay if we do it. I just dont want to see Jamaal Brown pass block for us anymore, its like playing craps...its just a matter of time.

I read somewhere that we may need to go with a veteran at RT since the options are not that great out there.

Maybe. And we probably won't even have to wait until June 1st to find out who that is, since teams can designate a player they cut as a "June 1st" casualty in order to release him sooner.

Are there any 3rd round RT projected as starting caliber?

If they were right-away starting caliber they likely would not be in the third round.

Personally the only trade up into the second move that I would like would be a trade-up to get OT Mike Adams.

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft

I think MS and BA did a good job finding good prospects in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds last year. We have four picks in those three rounds, so I would be fine with the staying put and doing their thing again.

My question is about the third round prospects:
Which of the this year's third round RT could start and become this season's Jared Veldeer?

I know you didn't say anything about trading up. I did not mean to put words in your mouth. But you did mention starter. 3rd round starters are very rare...or they would not be third rounders...hence the trade-up mention.

But to go with the spirit of your question, IMO perhaps Nate Potter from Boise St. can be had in the 3rd or 4th and be developed into a starter. He has the Shanny build.

In the middle rounds, you can either address needs or try to take whatever starters are remaining on your board. You just need to get incredibly lucky to do both.

Tight end starters with good upside are typically there in the middle rounds. Although this is kind of a weak year for TEs.

Such as Washington's own Chris Cooley (3rd rounder).

Baltimore just made a "sizable" offer to Ben Grubbs, but he has not immediately accepted it.

He'll probably leave town if he turns them down.

Just the latest news.

This guy was at the senior bowl and played well elevated his stock to late second, 3rd round. Mitchell Shwartz out of California. Might need a year in the system, then a starter at RT wouldnt be out of the question. Has the versatilty of playing both spots.

Cards are going to release Levi Brown, per Sheft. Was drafted 2007, 5th overall pick.

He may not fit our system though. I've thought about him too. With not much money..not so good, to risky to put money on someone who may not fit our offense.

I think Winston's going to cost big bucks, but he's pretty much playing in a similar offense as ours. Very durable, 28 years old, yeah..let's give him a look.

$6 OR $7 million a year, not that much considering what he's capable of. Then again it depends on how much cap space we actually have which I still can't get a clear answer on.

vallin21 03-12-2012 07:51 PM

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft

If he and Kyle Shanahan had a good relationship in Houston, SIGN HIM NOW!!!! This is slightly problematic, considering the NFL came and "took" 36 million of our cap space less than 24 before FA, but with a few more restructurings, and some more cuts, we should be able to sign Winston and possibly a Garcon, with an outside chance of signing VJ... I'm still livid the NFL chose 1 DAY before FA to take away our 36 million in cap space... UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Ruhskins 03-12-2012 07:53 PM

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft

Eric Winston needs to be a priority. MS should learn from watching the Iggles that you don't protect your expensive QB with a cheap offensive line.

Everything is falling into place like its scripted.
Griffin + Eric Winstrom provide great answers to our biggest offseason questions.

Sign Eric Winstrom.
