With a year's experience, Helu will be better. Helu Plus, if you will.

It looked bad early on in the FA period before the linebacker market set. At this point, I feel comfortable saying that no one will beat the offer the Skins have on the table.

The Skins might have to raise the offer a bit to actually get him to sign, but he's not out there taking FA visits or anything.

Encouraging. So how much cash above the market price is London going to take off Danny's hands?

Who do you (all) see as the best replacement for him on the horizon? Or maybe another FA is appropriate as tribute to London as maybe the team's best FA signing in two decades! :food-smil

I agree. IMO it is just a matter of time before he re-signs. He wanted to find a sweet deal elsewhere but we have the sweetest offer there is.

Helu would of rushed for well over 1,000 last year if he would of been starting from the jump. He ended with 640 rushing yards and 2 TDs in 5 starts, although he did play 15 games.

Even if the Redskins have to restructure a contract or two in order to give Fletcher a fair deal, they'll do it. He's too valuable to the team.

I think he'd be a good short term solution to our safety problems. Although I'd rather see Meriweather at free rather than strong safety though.

Easy to see where Shanny and Co focus has been since the move up trade, secondary. The FA signings and draftee workouts have all been focused around the Safety and CBs positions. Good to see.

Down the road, will Perry Riley be the quarterback of the defense? Or will it be whoever we eventually get to replace London?

That's the real question; is Perry Riley's leadership skills and understanding of the defense accelerating as rapidly as his physical play on the field did last season. If he's up to the task, we draft someone mid rounds for depth that may turn into the next Perry Riley. And Perry becomes the next London Fletcher.

I think this is the reason why London needs to be back. I feel that Riley needs another year under London to become a good QB of the defense.

On a somewhat related note, I was listening to an interview with Patrick Willis on ESPN's Football Today podcast. And I was thinking that the 49ers must have the best ILB duo in the NFL in Willis and Navarro Bowman.

Byron Westbrook now a FA:
The Redskins failed to tender restricted free agent CB Byron Westbrook, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Westbrook went undrafted back in 2007, but was picked up by Washington and has been there ever since. Brian's little brother spent his first two years on the practice squad, but has contributed on special teams and provided depth at corner over the last three seasons. There's a good chance he lands a camp invite despite the non-tender. Apr 5 - 3:47 PM
He's got an offer from us.

I really wanted him a few years back, solid player and an even better person. Has had some tough injuries in recent years though and I'm not sure it makes sense to take a chance on both him and Cedric

No crystal ball here, but suppose this means we're looking for an RT with the 3rd round pick? If Fletch is back at ILB, Williams as a possible safety, Cedric / Merriweather -- seems like RT is the glaring unmet immediate need. Unfortunately a 3rd (or later) round rookie may not start this year anyway, so I hope we are able to get a viable solution more reliable than Yoga Brown..

We know Shanahan's great at picking late-round O-line gems, so with 6 late-round picks, I hope he can work some magic.

According to a report from The National Football Post, the Washington Redskins have offered a contract to the San Francisco 49ers' free agent safety Madiew Williams. The 30 year old safety played his 8th season in the league for the 49ers in 2012 after two longer stints with the Vikings and the Bengals. Williams played in 15 games for the 49ers but did not see heavy rotation, and he registered only 9 tackles, significantly fewer than in previous years.
The terms of the Redskins offer to Wiliams are unknown at this time. The 49ers defensive backfield has already seen some action this offseason: the team parted ways with Reggie Smith, who signed with the Carolina Panthers, and they applied the franchise tag to Dashon Golson. I like Westbrook. I always favor the underrated players. He was the hero of the Arizona game when he recovered that fumble to secure a win. While I personally think that he'd be a better safety than a CB, he's a most excellent special teams player. I would definitely like to see him back in 2012.

Our secondary is underwhelming, to say the least. I don't know that we can hope to see any improvement over last year apart from, wait for it Tripp, significantly better play from Hall. I'm never certain of anything about Hall, except the fact he's got potential to be elite because he's shown (brief) flashes of brilliance. Seeing as how the offense hasn't had a bona fied star while Hall's been a "star" on defense, maybe the automatic attention toward Griffin has Hall preparing for his best season ever? ;)

This is the precise reason Raheem Morris was hired as defensive backs coach. The front seven played hard nosed football all year last season. But the secondary was weak. Injuries to Atogwe and Landry made it possible for reserve safeties Gomes and Doughty to start and receive playing time. Also, Josh Morgan played well all year but came on strong towards the end of last season. DeAngelo Hall did play well at times, but struggled against elite wide receivers and revealed once again that he can only play his best football when he's not covering elite receivers. Had it not been for the secondary, the defense would have finished within the top ten in the league. Hopefully the addition of Morris will assist greatly in limiting passing yards.

We finally signed a free agent o-lineman. Anyone know anything about this guy?
The Redskins also announced the signing of free agent offensive tackle James Lee. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Lee has spent the last four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The South Carolina State product started nine games for the Bucs in 2010. Last season, he appeared in three games for Tampa Bay, starting one.
