This is an awesome thread. It brings back so many great memories.
I know. Suddenly I can remember all of the names from my childhood that I haven't thought of for a few decades! This will be a good education for the younger members. |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Emtman could have been great... he had a rough time with injuries
Anyone else remember Reggie Brooks, #40 RB? He was a 1,000-yard rusher for us.
Great one year wonder. I was so pumped when we drafted him, remember this run from Notre Dame? [YT]X6j_GnIb2pY[/YT] |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Marcus Washington. LOVED that guy when he played for us. Was beast most of the time and one of the nicest players I've ever met off-the-field.
|
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
We probably have so many QBs no one remembers.
Cary Conklin Jeff Rutledge Tony Banks Shane Matthews Danny Wuerffel John Friesz Ed Rubbert Unfortunately I'll never forget Heath Shuler. The bum still makes my blood boil. It was like false advertising, bait-and-switch...he was supposed to be so great. |
I knew that Terry Crews played for us, had one tackle too...but I did not realize he was the Old Spice guy until just now.

Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
We have so many players that no one remembers was on the Redskins. Most were great players with OTHER teams so it's quite sad:
Frank Wycheck Stan Humpries Rich Gannon Gerald Riggs Henry Ellard David Akers Trent Green Jeff Hostettler Alvin Harper Steve Entman (one of the biggest NFL busts ever)
Here's another one compliments of the "Way Back Machine": Paul Krause. Krause is a HOF Free Safety. Played his first three seasons with the Skins and was then traded to Minnesota. |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
I'm going to go with Reggie Branch. Not because of his stats, or lack thereof, but because of this story:
While tailgating before the 2004 Redskins/Eagles game in DC, some Eagles fans Reggie knew caught up to him in the parking lot. Apparently he'd bet them in the first game that year that the Skins would win, and since they lost, he had to wear a T.O. jersey into the stadium. He had his 1987 Super Bowl ring on, and since I'm a loudmouth. I yelled "Reggie, you can't wear an Eagles jersey and a ring at the same time!" He replied, "You're right," and handed me his ring. It was the heaviest piece of jewelry I'd ever touched. I had it for about three minutes before he took it back. Totally worth it. |

Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Great story Brud!...welcome to the board ;)
I forgot Todd Bowles |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
I know he wasnt a player, but I bet alot of people dont know Vince Lombardi was our coach in 1969 - and on top of that completely turned the franchise around.........

Havent heard that name in a while. Awesome. Alot of these guys were pretty damn good players for a long time with the skins. Isnt this supposed to be players that totally flew under the radar in b&g. Either way this list is awesome! |
RB Gerald Riggs
How strange is it that when I think of Riggs, I think of him in the red Falcons helmet first, despite that he played on the Redskins for a while? He was one of the best in the league for Atlanta in the mid-80s. In '85, he was a few yards short of 2,000 AP yards. |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
It's funny that a lot of people say Bryant, because at the time many thought he was a bit of a bust with us after his tremendous USFL career

At the time I always thought Bryant was misused,as in not used enough. He became mostly a 3rd down back and I thought we should have used him more |

He had some injury issues didn't he? George Rogers seems very forgotten when you talk about Redskin RBs (and I guess to some extent Terry Allen as well) |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Yeah Bryant wasn't a workhorse type of back, he was always dinged up it seemed.
George Rogers had a couple of nice years here. |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Odell Thurman and Dre Bly. The Redskins that never were.
|
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
How about Kentwan Balmer? He's the Redskin that no one knows where to find.
|
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
Actually come to think of it I miss the stars from our one year of Martyball. Kevin Mitchell, Ki-Jana Carter, and mostly David Szott who was a master at running that inside pull where the center and guard would block down and Szott would pull into the hole functioning as a lead blocker.
Also a lot of people forget the greats like Sam Shade and Pete Kendell. |
Re: 10 Favorite Redskins That No One Else Knows About
RIP Kevin Mitchell

I didn't mean on this list, I just meant in general I mentioned Rogers along with Bryant because they were the backs (along with Vital I think) on that 1986 team (which was widely underappreciated) |
lol I too thought the idea here was to name some obscure guys
Yeah obscure because people other than skins fans dont realize how great they are or they played for a short time with the skins and prople dont know it. |
