I think they make the Super Bowl this year
Please enlighten us how?

Their old defense has gotten a year older and has lost their best playmaker for at least the majority of the regular season.

They have a difficult schedule.

And well their offense is still their offense. Good but not great.

I don't see it but everyone has their opinion.
Yeah, what the hell?

I expected this to be a joke thread by Smoot since he was asking for it yesterday.

I hate this move.
Well, I wasn't asking for them to sign him and cut Gano. I just suggested they bring him in today (as today is a common day to bring in vets anyway) and try him out. I mean he's right up the street, just bring him in, let him kick some. See what's he got and keep him your back pocket if/when necessary.

I'm not the Gano fan that others are, but I do feel bad for him. Shanahan has never been a strong fan of Gano's either, but Danny Smith fought for him and he stayed on. I suspect MS' plan was that Gano could stay until he found someone better. For whatever reason, he felt that-basically sight unseen-Cundiff was that someone better.

Well I picked the Patriots last year and I didn't feel like picking them again, and I just don't see anyone else that really blows me away...but anyway, this is not the thread for that
@JohnKeim Surprised by this: Cundiff has attempted more than 25 kicks in a season five times; has made more than 80 percent of his kicks once.
Stats, numbers, percents, etc... can be manipulated any way to either sound good or bad.

Look her it is manipulated to sound like Cundiff is good:

6. The best kicking leg in the league: whacked. You can look it up. Over the past two years, Billy Cundiff is a 90 percent field goal kicker inside the 50 (53 of 59), and no other kicker averaged more yards per kickoff (69.5) or had more touchbacks than his 84. But the Ravens, bugged more by his 1-of-7 from 50-plus in the last two seasons than his crucial miss in the AFC title game last January, cut him Sunday. They prefer to save $1.5 million on the cap and go with a four-year kickoff man from the University of Texas, Justin Tucker. Risky move for a Super Bowl contender.

Bottom line; Redskins said we need more accuracy inside 50 yards then we do outside of 50 yards. They are rolling the dice. They want to make sure they make the layups and take a chance of on their 3PT percentage. That is what Cundiff gives them over Gano.

skinsfaninok 08-28-2012 10:17 AM

Another horrible kicker

Re: Redskins Sign K Billy Cundiff, Release Gano

I could definitely see bringing him in. Was Cundiff cut for a reason other than money?

Gano's no superstar but these two aren't too far about. I like that Gano is so young and we could potentially have a kicker for a long time if he develops. Also, he does have a very strong leg and has been improving every year. I was hoping this would be the year he really makes strides.

Oh well. Cundiff is better than some of the kickers we've had over the years.

At least we've had good luck with punters. Hunter Smith was our leading scorer, now Sav Rocca, a LB who punts.

Yeah I mean to me I don't see this as Cundiff vs. Gano. I see it as Cundiff vs. Rackers. And what he saw in Cundiff that he didn't see in Rackers I'm not really sure.

Bad move in my opinion. If Cundiff doesn't work out, there's Giorgio Tavecchio who kicked at Cal, the 49ers just released him. Pretty good kicker.

Yeah, he was outperformed by a rookie kicker in camp.

A guy named Giorgio should be able to kick. They weren't going to keep anyone over Akers, so he was just s camp body for them. Lets bring him in.

hmm I don't really like this move. Apparently one thing I've concluded from all this is that MS is not a fan of Ganos and Rackers must be pretty bad now.

Re: Redskins Sign K Billy Cundiff, Release Gano

Rackers has really fallen far, fast. A few years ago, he was one of the best in the league with Arizona.

Honestly, if Cundiff doesn't work out, there is a strong likelihood that Gano is still available mid-season. This isn't a terrible move imo and there is always turnover at the kicker position for most of the league throughout the season, anyway.

Not according to this; to me it sounds like the Ravens want to save some dollars and thought the rookie was on par with Cundiff:

I don't get the "I don't like this move" sentiment. I mean I can see that this is a head-scratcher in some ways but it's not like we cut a pro-bowl kicker for a scrub. At worst this was a lateral move.

Re: Redskins Sign K Billy Cundiff, Release Gano

Should have just kept Gano. At least he was young and possibly could have turned things around (which I honestly felt he was doing). Now we have an old, washed up kicker, who is no better.

Typical Redskins move if you ask me.

32 honestly isn't "old" for a kicker. He is basically in his prime.

shocked by the Gano love, but when we let Carlos walk, people rejoiced. strange.

undrafted, statistically poor kicker > probowl corner, for a team in desperate need of secondary help

I'm not sure you could call this a "typical Redskins move"

Re: Redskins Sign K Billy Cundiff, Release Gano

The thing with graham gano is that you could never sit back and say "Oh, he's got this one" because he would be streaky. He did improve though last year, but he still wasn't in the top tier of Kickers. Cundiff was, until that playoff miss. We shouldn't worry about him missing playoff field goals for us anytime soon, but we should also treat him like a more experienced Gano. But the one thing I always say about kickers "If you have to rely on them winning the game for you, then you're really not that good of an offense if you can't get TDs"

Now I know that quote is going to get criticized and draw uproar, but the fact of the matter is if your team has been not converting on 3rd and 4th and shorts and has been fumbling, throwing picks and allowing big plays on defense, yet your team is somehow in the game, where a field goal will either tie it or win it, and the kicker misses it, all the blame goes to the kicker instead of the rest of the teams players who missed up earlier big time in the game.
What does coaching have to do with it?
Just look at our special teams over the course of Danny Smith's career here the past decade and you'll see they suck. The coverage teams, the blocked FGs, the endless penalties....it goes on and on and on. Sure, you can point the finger at the players, but if it's not corrected, it ultimately falls on the coach. Well, it's been long passed time to have parted ways with Danny.

Re: Redskins Sign K Billy Cundiff, Release Gano

Definitely can. This is like Dallas getting rid of Flozell Adams for Alex Barron. You get rid of a guy, and replace him with someone who is no better. I'd rather have the younger kicker who looks like he's on the rise.

What Graziano fails to understand or to point out that both kickers were not asked to do the same thing on kickoffs. Cundiff was allowed to boot it out the back as were the Skins wanted Gano to directional kick it with air so that the coverage team could pin inside the 20. THAT is why there is a difference in the touch backs.
