Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I'd give Keenan Robinson a lot of playing time, next to Fletcher to help with coverage on the tight ends and running backs. His scouting draft reports suggests that he can help in coverage, especially covering tight ends. The redskins need coverage help as much as they can get it. And he was productive in the preseason with 17 tackles. No one else in the front 7 has proven they can cover. And the secondary is in shambles right now with the corners needing help from the safeties, who are the defense's biggest concern and personnel weakness right now.
It's either this or rely on Orakpo, Kerrigan, and the defensive linemen to put constant pressure on Brees without blitzing. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
ouch, and against Drew Brees too
|
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Perhaps they'll use Doughty primarily, but put in Gomes on passing downs?
And am I correct in thinking Bernstine is much too raw for anything but emergency use? |
ouch, and against Drew Brees too
Don't think it really matters since Meriweather is a horrible coverage safety. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Before, I was saying that we will upset the saints.
Then Merriweather got injured in preseason and I was cautious. Then Tanard Jackson got suspended and I was like 'ehh' its not looking good for the upset. Now with Merriweather hurt and down for sure from this game, and no tanard, I'm just hoping its not a blow out. |

Once, the last game against Philly. |

Are Jackson and Meriweather difference makers?

Was that a blow out? I don't remember that game. But that's an in division, we played that team well because we see them twice a year. Saints we see 1-2 every four years. Drew Brees with a football is more dangerous than Mike Vick IMO, because I've seen the eagles offense be stopped many times. Havent seen the saints just get shut out or even stopped. |

Well, they're two young pro bowl players, so yeah I'd say they definitely could have been difference makers... |

Ugh..
Well, next man up... Let's see what depth is made of.. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Are Jackson and Meriweather difference makers?
opposed to our depth at safety, certainly yes. I think they are even more important when you start the season with instability at the 3rd corner position and D Hall coming off a bad season. Those CBs need a lil help, it was more likely to come from Meriweather and T Jax than M Williams, Gomes, and Reed. We saw the Reed, Gomes starter combo last year for several games, man that was horrible. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
btw what happened to Nick Collins, did he retire from that neck injury or what?
|
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Reed will do exactly what Merriweather was going to do. Great run support, and average pass defense.
Our safety play this season won't be affected by who we put back there on our active roster at the moment. They are all above average to average. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I'm concerned about M. Williams. Gomes, Bernstine, and Doughty are about the same players overall, with Doughty and Gomes having the edge with playing time and Bernstine with potential play making abilities. Williams has limited range in the deep passing game.
|
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Gomes actually played great this preseason. He's not that much of a difference maker but he's solid. It's too bad that Jackson and Meriweather are out, Jackson much worse. But Doughty is serviceable and we're learning about Bernstine and Madieu Williams is an experienced veteran. It's truly no different than last season with Landry and Atogwe.

Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Brees might get 400 Sun.

Interesting. When we picked them up people just shrugged and said meh, they're "just guys". Now they're pro bowlers... potential difference makers. Not picking on you, just funny how perceptions can vary so greatly. |

so true around here. As soon as someone gets hurt they were the potential difference between losing and winning on Sunday. Look S position sucks for us the level of play from starter to PS is not that great. Anyone at that position could go down it won't make that big of difference because the next guy up is at about the same talent level as the guy he is replacing. You can bust on Reed but some how he has stayed on the same team for a long time by NFL standards he must be doing something good. Merriweather and Jackson can't say that they are journey men. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I think the bottom line is
Merriweather, T Jax > Reed, M. Williams, Gomes We are a most likely a stronger team with T Jax, Ferryweather in the lineup |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Depth wise I understand the concern, I'm just not sure there's any significant drop off in talent/production.
|
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I think the more disappointing thing is T Jax is a damn idiot and it especially hurts because he was lights out great in the preseason games.
I think a drop off from say average to below average is significant, especially in a fragile secondary where our CB play is already questionable. I think the pressure falls now on M Williams to play well. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
^ and i FEAR that statement, against the saints especially
|
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Even with Jackson and Merriweather our secondary was not very good. These guys are cast offs from other teams for various reasons. Merriweather was let go by a bad New England defense, benched by Chicago and then released. Does this happen to good football players? No. His Pro Bowl days or day is long gone.

we share the same thoughts on all your posts in this thread and I was wondering the exact same thing. When healthy this guy is elite. I would even pick him up if he has a chance to become healthy. We are in desperate need of playmakers at safety. I was comfortable with TJax and Merriweather. I just dont trust Gomes Doughty and company, Madiu is ok but i hope im wrong and they are ok but i think they will get torched. I have even tried to find next years top free agents at safety and in the draft lol but like i said i hope im wrong and we are ok there. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I just hope Bernstine is backing up Williams and has been improving to take over that position.

I don't envision us loading the box toouch against new Orleans unless their interim hc has a vastly different play calling philosophy from Payton. |
Wow, forgive the grammar and spelling on that, was via tapatalk.

I really would love to know how many fans, if they had the chance to be a GM would fall into the Vinny Cerrato mold. Here's what I mean: Vinny Cerrato absolutely believed in the importance of "the" player. A superstar or stand out player was the answer to any weakness, and conversely any weakness was simply a deficient player. Now, I am not saying that you don't want to always watch for a more talented player, but the biggest thing about football is that it truly is a team sport. Good coaching can cover multitudes of player gaffes, and mediocre players can do well in systems that understand their weaknesses. Will we have the number 1 safety play, or CB play, no absolutely not. Should we panic and sign a guy who is a "name", but not on anybody else's roster? I don't know about that. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
Id like Gomes to get a shot at SS over Reed. See if he has improved.

That would be great if our 7th round pick could turn out to be a quality starter for us. I wasn't all that impressed by williams in the preseason. Hopefully he shows me something that I didnt see during the regular season if he is our starter. Although I wasn't particularly paying attention to gomes last year, when I try to remember his time on the field I can't recall any glaring problems I had with his game. For this reason, I feel ok about gomes filling in for us. |

I just hope whoever the safety is keeps their head on a swivel. They did lose one of their best receivers, and Brees lost some time in the preseason. That with the loss of the genius that is their coach, it could be close. But losing a mediocre safety to injury and replacing him with another mediocre player doesn't really make the situation super gloomy. I think if the saints were going to dominate us, they will have done so with or without merriweather back there, regardless. |

For the record, I liked the signing of Meriweather. I loved the signing of Tanard Jackson. And when comparing these guys to Gomes and Bernstein (rookie, and 2nd year) and Reed (never a good starter), its like night and day. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
If I recall correctly RD had a pretty nice pick in the preseason. Yeah preseason I know. He's not the most physically gifted but he's smart and he knows this defense. If we give up a lot of points...a lot of guys aren't doing they're jobs. This whole game doesn't fall on Reed Doughty. I'm not making excuses before the game even begins. The rest of the team plays to their capabilities and we get a W.

Sometimes with players like Reed, when they don't have much athletic ability, they usually study tape more, so Reed needs to be on top of his film study this week going against a QB whose much smarter than him. Good luck Reed. Oh and CATCH THE BALL! |

Let's hope Stephen Bowen, Carrkier, and Cofield are able to collapse the pocket that Brees is notorious for throwing out of. If they bring Riley, Kerrigan, Orakpo, or Fletcher on a blitz there's a chance of a sack as long as the secondary doesn't break down and is able to man up on the Saints receivers. |

It'll be interesting to see how well those 3 collapse the pocket. Because the Saints OL lost Carl Nicks who was a Great guard, but signed a very good guard in grubbs...so they're still pretty damn good. |
Re: Brandon Meriweather Out 2-4 Weeks
I dont think our front three is the strength of our defense, and I still think that they will be suspect in collapsing any pocket short of maybe Arizonas or Tampas. Our push will be on passing downs with our OLB's of course, and a safety blitz here and there. Hopefully we wont go zero blitz crazy, because even with a weakened OLine and receivers, Brees is very cerebral, and can always check down to their RB's and TE's, who can all catch very well.
This is definitely going to be a chess match while we are on defense. I do think that our offense is going to be able to move the ball, but I just dont know how effective we will be in the red zone. If we can score TD's on half of our RZ posessions, I think we have a 50% chance to win. But historically speaking, that has never been a strength. It has been a bane for this team. But lets wait and see how much we have progressed in one year with a much improved QB and WR corps, as well as yet another year in the 34, which is still relatively new for us. I think this is the year our defense either takes a tremendous step forward, or a tremendous step backwards, we will either be top 10 in the league, or bottom 10. Feast or Famine for the D, if you will. |

It's how the Jets used to beat the Pats a few years ago. Brady was under intense pressure while trying to complete passes against 8 Defensive backs. |
