I'm not surprised ... I thought this might happen, as I stated earlier. Part of it is a matter of saving face, I think. The FO said repeatedly that they would match any offer to their RFAs, and they'd lose credibility if they turned around and let Johnson go. I too like the fact that we're keeping our homegrown talent ... I hope the same holds true for McCants. Maybe this latest move will make teams think twice before signing McCants to an offer sheet.

BJ will compete for the H-back spot and has always been a standout on special teams, but his contract is going to make the team make some tough decisions. I wonder why Larry Moore hasn't been released yet, seems like it's inevitable.

SmootSmack 03-26-2004 08:28 PM

As I understand it, Moore still hasn't been cleared to play from his injury last season. And NFL policy doesn't allow Moore to be released until he's cleared to play
So, was matching the offer to Johnson tied to the decision to let Trotter seek a trade? What are the financials behind a Trotter trade, do we save money?
Not sure how the numbers work out on trading Trotter... where's that Crazy Canuck when you need him???

ahhh, thanks for the clarification.

he will easily be replaced by some faster young stud that is paid the league minium. Its a smart move to let him go. Bye-bye good luck in N.O.

SittingBull 03-27-2004 05:23 AM

The contract was matched.

skinsfanthru&thru 03-27-2004 01:08 PM

all I have to say is for the money he's getting paid, especially this season, he better live up to the obvious expectations that Gibbs has for him.

Jamaican'Skin 03-27-2004 02:34 PM

Well if Coach feels he's the type of guy that needs to remain here in DC, then I trust him. I just hope BJ lives up to everything.

Ghost 03-27-2004 02:38 PM

BJ does two things real well: he blocks and plays killer special teams. No wonder Gibbs wanted to keep him.

Trade Bryan Johnson?

Check this out guys, from http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/03/27/sports1754EST0389.DTL

"The Redskins matched New Orleans' four-year, $4.3 million offer sheet to restricted free agent FB Bryan Johnson. Gibbs, however, said that Johnson's status had not been resolved, leaving the possibility open for a trade. Johnson has not attended the minicamp."

So could it be that we plan on trading Johnson (and Trotter) and getting a couple of late picks in return?

Is that what that means? I wasn't sure. So it might be some kind of sign and trade package? Do the saints have someone we want?

Ghost 03-27-2004 07:16 PM

Does anyone know why BJ isn't in minicamp? Does he have an excuse or is he AWOL? Nice to hear LaVar talking reconciliation.

skinsfanthru&thru 03-28-2004 02:25 AM

maybe we r gonna try and get them to take johnson and trotter and maybe next years 2nd or 3rd for their DE Howard(the one who was franchised) I think it is?
