I wouldn't complain if we started going for it on 4th down as long as we're at the 50 yard line or better.
4th down and 4 or less anywhere on the field should be spread formation with the RG3 QB shotgun sneak everytime. Like he does near the endzone. Other than getting tackled and fumbling the one time, that play gets the neccessary yardage everytime. |

what is this "easy" way to correct the mistake? Does David Akers have a more talented twin brother living in Shanny's basement that we don't know about? |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
No one was bitching when he made all 4 against the Saints. Not sure why he can put the kick offs out of the endzone but can't make a long FG.
Smoot I agree with you on Cundiff, but I will add that the Falcons are totally explosive on offense and every possesion will count this Sunday, so he better make all his FGs this week. The Skins will not be able to stop this team on defense, they will score 30+, the Redskins can only hope to stay with them.
The Skins wont be staying with Atlanta if they are relying on Cundiff anyways, except for extra points. Im a lot more worried about the defense at this point. |
Lovin Cundiff work on kickoffs. Gano had multiple kicks out of bounds resulting in the starting spot of the 40 last year, thats insane. Cundiff getting more touchbacks as well.
Tbh, that was all Danny Smith. He kept wanting Gano to corner kick it believing our coverage teams would hopefully force other teams to start at the 19 3/4 yard line instead of the 20 yard line. Starting the other team at the 19 3/4 yard line once and starting at the 40 yard line 5 times was considered a success to DS. Dont know why, but he seems to think anything is better than the other team starting at the 20, even if its past the 20. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Personally everyone can have a bad day. If his misses continue then bring in someone else.
On a side note.... who do we bring in as the replacement? Gano? perhaps, D.Smith had to set the coaching staff right I've heard and pointed out that it was not Gano's fault for most of the kicks last year, the fault lied in the OL for not blocking. So besides Gano who does the team bring in? are there any Rookie kickers out their with strong legs? or perhaps in the CFL? |

"Why keep the young kicker with the strong leg?? He's cost us so many meaningful games!! Bring in the vet, he's money from inside the 40!!"
So much for that.... I'm a Gano lover, but cutting Cundiff now is the wrong move. Sends a bad message. Give him time to right the ship... but if not... :point: GANO :point: |

I want someone like Wade Phillips, who took a terrible 4-3 defense and turned into into a top 3-4 defense overnight. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Man, I never thought I would ever prefer Gano over anyone but missing 40 and under field-goals for a vet and a pro is inexcusable. If Billyboy misses another gimmie kick you have to cut him during the game.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Here's my problem(s) with Cundiff
- He's too consistently inconsistent; more so than Gano was IMO - I'll give him a pass on the 57 yarder, but when you miss a 31 yard kick, that is unforgivable. - He made the kick but as many have mentioned; 1 yard back, he misses, and we're 2-2 - Lastly, when people say "he made the kick that counted", while that's true, he missed 3 others before that. If he makes just 1 of those kicks we might not have discussion. You can't ignore or dismiss, the 3 prior misses, knowing that if we were just a yard back from missing. Bottom Line: Whether it's Gano or whoever; I would like the FO to bring in a few K's. Any K can lose a game; but Cundiff has lost several in his career. We need to take a look at K's if he has another bad game this wk. |

We can't have a crappy kicking game and I am sure Cundiff is going to be in a short leash, however our defense just has to score TDs. To me that's the big picture. |
I'd rather the team focuses on how to actually score TDs instead of FGs and improve that 3rd down conversion rate. Because those things are going to lose us games more than Cundiff.
That being said, I am sure the Redskins will do their due diligence and bring in some kicker competition this week. I'm a bit bummed that some teams out there have picked up rookie FA who are doing well and with our kicking woes the only competition was between Rackers and Gano.
I argee I would much rather see TD. Shanny said that they wasn't bring anyone in, however ask Gano if that means anything. |

I don't understand why we didn't grab Wade when Dallas canned him? Did he and Mike have a falling out after winning SBs together? |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I would be severely disappointed if we cut Cundiff based on Sundays performance. Everyone can have a "bad day". NFL kickers are no different. Just an inch off his mark on the ball or a slight shift on his approach can make for a "really bad day", like we observed on Sunday. However, he is a professional, so I expect him to bounce back and be consistent once more.
I also believe the Skins chose Cundiff because they expected the offense to be much improved under RGIII. They preferred the consistency of Cundiffs short and mid range kicks than the others kickers semi consistent all around kicking. Based on that idea, Cundiff is on a very short leash if continues to have "bad days". |

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Can Wade play safety or CB? If not he isn't going to be much help. Our problem doesn't boil down to bad coaching. We lack TALENT in our secondary and don't have a shut down front 7 to make up for it. We have a solid front 7 and a TERRIBLE secondary. Plain and simple. It won't matter who the coach is as long as we can't cover down field. We really lack even one difference maker in coverage. IF we upgrade the talent we may be better able to evaluate the coaching. At this point I can't say whether it is good or bad. I suspect it is just average but who knows?

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I'm always iffy on Cundiff after he blew the Ravens AFC Championship chances last year, missing a... what do ya know... 31 yard FG.
Russian roulette. But if this is the best we've got then... C'est la vie. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I don't consider Cundiff amongst the best NFL kickers. He's had problems throughout his career making long range kicks. I was surprised by how Mike Shahanan gave him the job after Graham Gano had won it fairly in training camp/preseason. Let's hope Shanahan's decision to release Gano in favor of Cundiff doesn't come back to bite us later on down the road.

While it is well known that BC is not the >50 yard Juggernaut. His accuracy under that is formidable.....only not last Sunday...

How could we ever say that it did. I was a big Gano fan (yo Gano), but seriously even if Cundiff missed. how would anyone be able to rue the fact that Gano wasn't kicking. He had not developed that much of a consistency to make us confident he would make one BC missed. |

You're absolutely right about that. I just feel Gano would have made that 57 yarder, seeing as though he made a 59 yarder last season versus San Francisco. |

Because the Redskins don't play in Houston. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Two things:
1) Funny how week 1 Cundiff is 4-4 making field goals left and right and everyone here is "Wow we found our Kicker!" "Glad the Ravens got him!" to this past week "Cut this guy!!!" "We should have know after he missed that kick for the Ravens!!" 2) IF, and this is a big IF, Rex Ryan is fired this year, I think we should hire him the same day he is fired. Because I can really see the jets as a bottom 5 team this year. |
I've always been a gano backer but he was never Mr consistent. As many have said lets call it 1/3 and hopefully the misses are out of his system. No need to think competition already.
|
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Billy Cundiff is definitely on the hot seat now. Not saying he would have been cut had he missed that last FG attempt, but that 1/3 outing still makes him appear suspect whether he made the game winning kick or not.

No. Average d coordinators adjust the scheme and tweak the overall game-plan throughout the game to put their players in the best position to defend what the offense is bringing on the next down, next series, next quarter. I haven't seen Haslett do this. He tends to adjust at half-time, and not always get that right. Good d coordinators make adjustments at least every series, and get most of them right. Great d coordinators force the offense to adjust to the defense! Lousy d coordinators make fewer adjustments and get fewer right. See: Haslett, James. Specifically, Haslett let the secondary get torched by Danny freaking Amendola for nearly a half without putting a safety over the top on every play to shut em down!!! Why the eff did we go out and sign DL free agents, draft another and two top OLBs in the last two years if not to have a consistent front seven? And the guys standing in for Rak are getting pressures and sacks. Oh, yeah, a guy name London Fletcher plays in that bunch too. So give your hobbit DBs a hand out there when they face AJ Green, or a hot-handed VJax. And enough with the suicide stunts, a$$hole. Well geez I've thought forever Wade was in Denver then and nobody said boo, was it after then? One of the DCs Mike canned in the post-Elway years? That might explain it then...but bottom line, if not Wade find another guy who can give our defense a chance to consistently compete with it's athleticism, toughness and pride. Because we're not lacking in guys who can win if given the chance to compete. Hell, even our hobbit DBs have been hitting guys in the mouth pretty solid (this is not Hall, or Hall vs Wilson argument starter, leave it). And that's really the only group you should have to compensate for, having spent a good bit of time and resources on the front seven. So figure it the eff out JHaz. |

In terms of the talent issues, It's mostly the safety play. We basically have the same corners as last year. Look at the results we had last year. The difference is that we had a former pro bowler at FS and a quality SS in landry last year. Now we have the backup's backups starting for us at those positions and they are frequently out of position. There are some scheme issues there too in certain situations but the biggest problem is FS/SS. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
on the gano note: anyone who has attended a redskins practice, or seen a redskins practice,
did gano ever practice kicking over the "wall", roughly 12 ft tall and about 8 yds in front of the kick? |

I agree. While I'm not a huge Haslett fan I don't think anyone would be able to make our secondary look like all-stars. For everyone that was crying about play calling on offense last year, how's it look now that we have a QB that can run pretty much anything you ask him to? No amount of scheme was able to cover up the glaring lack of talent at QB, and we're seeing the same thing now in the secondary. If you don't have the horses you can't win the race. Simple. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I don't think many DCs could come to the Skins and turn this defense into a top 5/top 10 in the league. This defense has a LOT of holes and needs talent period. However, I feel that our current DC doesn't do a good job at adjusting and compensating for those deficiencies. I've seen people that know a hell of a lot more football on Twitter talk about Haslett's inability to adjust.
In comparing both units, up until last year, the defense has always had the better players. And upon MS' arrival, the team spent picks/money on defensive players. Losing Orakpo and Carriker has been a HUGE blow to the defense, but some of the issues that we are having on defense have to do a lot with coaching. |
