I still want to cling onto the hope that I had from hearing his radio interview.

Re: Samari or Freddy?
This move cant be good. we need continuity. Smoot laid his body out on the line last year. Samari Rolle played only 11 games which means one of two things:
1. He doesnt have as much heart as Smoot, with both being in their contract years, to play every game. 2. He had a bad injury, so he may be hitting the downside of his career. Why shell out that much money for a new player to learn a new system again (Even though he has had GW)? This is insane ... l long live smoot. Potential Best Secondary in the league next year (CB1: Springs(2nd year in system) CB:2 (Smoot, team leader) FS: Sean Taylor (Most talented athlete in the league entering 2nd year, 1st as full time starter) SS Ryan Clark/Matt Bowen : With this secondary, they only need to do what their good at: lay down hits. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
If we are within 2to3 million we should work the deal and forget about Rolle. Smoot is still young and I think he will improve some over the next couple of years. With Rolle we do not know if he has peaked and is now starting to decline. Smoot has been here watching us over pay washed up player after player and if I was him I would want my due compensation. He maybe asking for a little much but we do know it won't be wasted money.

The first 3 years he spent in the NFL, he had Gregg Williams as his D coordinator. Gregg Williams system is broken down like this for the Cornerbacks, cover your man, you will get little to no help, because we blitz our extra coverage guys. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
Well... They said Springs was injury prone before he came here. Rolle has played for Williams before and he has personal ties to this defense in the coaching staff. The Safeties coach is a former teamate. I think he will fit in nicely with the skins. I don't really care about what he did in his personal life, everyone goes through tough times. I think he would come here to reunite with Williams and play on the #1 defense in the NFC. Smart players want to be on a team were the coach knows how to exploit their talents correctly, and Williams clearly knows how to do that. I hope we offered smoot around the same amount of money Then i would feel we tried to give smoot a chance to be on the team. the Corner position is clearly effected majorly by the defensive scheme, so to me it doesn't matter to me who we get. I just don't want us to overpay.

Re: Samari or Freddy?
look, the other FA we brought in that one year, sanders smith, etc. were all in their mid thirties. rolle is 28, and williams has coached him before. he knows what kind of player he is. if williams says hes the kind of player for HIS defense, then let it happen

Big C, I am squarely in your camp. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
I'm on the fence on this one. Granted, Williams IS the NFL coach here and not me, I just don't quite understand why he would let Smoot walk. Saying that, I also agree with who posted that we should have at least OFFERED Smoot the kind of money that Rolle is asking.
I still want to cling onto the hope that I had from hearing his radio interview.
Gibbs on Saturday said that negotiation had been steped up with Smoot And Peirce. I find it hard to believe that he would be saying this and at the same time having talks with Rolle. This does not sound like a Gibbs action.

I was thinking the same thing. Which leads me to believe that the Rolle thing may be a ploy to get a reaction out of Smoot. And if he doesnt respond appropriately, then they have already set up talks with Rolle, and they can continue. The Skins are trying to tell Smoot that he doesnt have any leverage. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
I will be very let down if we sign Rolle. He is a hell of a player but so is Smoot. Smoot has already expressed how much he wants to be back. I will be very pissed off to see them give Rolle a contract bigger than the one that Smoot is asking for. He is a true Redskin and I can already see Gibbs having character problems with Rolle in the future. I really hope the front office thinks about this before offering him a contract. BRING BACK SMOOT!!!!!!

Which is a good thing because he really ISN'T top 5 corner money (not to say his play won't escalate to BEING top 5) |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
i can honestly say i love smoooooot dog and i don't want him to leave our team. it is bewildering to me that we can pay rolle that much his production is obviously down and last season was major low point in his career.
POSITIVES OF BOTH We must remember however that ROLLE was under greg williams for his first few seasons and i believe that he may go back to that level of production. the titans went to the superbowl with both a good defense and offense and rolle was part of that team. he did pick off 6 int in the 2003-2004 season. He is probally in the top 7 CB in the league and is a coveted free agent this year. Smoot has improved greatly this season just like most everyone else on our team. he is definitly a leader on the team as are others but he is the voice. We hear him and get to see him. He is a true redskin one that has fun on the field. we can remember his dance after a sack in the lions game that washington got. it cost us 15 yards but we all must of laughed after we got the ball back. he is a face of the team and is probally.....no most definatly the best "NUMBER 2" CB in the league. COMPARE Rolle is probally better . he is known to be one of the best. But smoot has been the team his whole career. Rolle is a wife beater while smoot is a city lover. money is a surprising issue in that 12-14 million and we may pay rolle 15 million, it could be less and the difference in the bonus could be only a million. I don't think he can be compared at all to deion or bruce smith, they were past their peaks and samari is just getting started he could have another 7 good years if he is lucky. Both have experience with greg but samari seems to be greg's favorite. WIlliams knows the players more than any of us, we are just fans and reporters are just reporters and when williams is aware of both of their strengths and what they mean to the team. If GW Is OK then i will trust his judgement. ???? WHAT ABOUT TY LAW? |

On the status of Fred Smoot's negotiations:
"Fred Smoot is definitely a Redskin. Freddy came in last week and had a great talk with Dan and myself. The defensive coaches think a lot of him and we're working hard on that." straight from Gibbs. I hope this is some kind of sign!!!! BRING BACK SMOOT!!!!!! |

I truely want smoot back i have 2 jerseys of him, he is in my top 3 favorite players but this negotiation stuff has gone on to long also someone said he expressed how much he wanted to be here..... how? they have been arguing for months about a couple million both sides should cave a little. I don't want a new player on the team with questionable character but williams is not dumb, williams knows the positives and negitives of both of these guys and he is advising that we pay more for rolle and " I hope this is somekind of sign!!!!" |

Re: Samari or Freddy?
It makes no f-ing sense to me how they can justify not paying Smoot and then paying more money for his older replacement. it would be one thing if they decided they could not afford Smoot and then signed a less expensive free agent replacement. This is just typical Redskins though, in valueing other teams players more than their own. How in the world can you say on one hand that giving Smoot his demands will cost you other players and then go out and spend even more money on a different CB. I really thought Coach Gibbs was going to put a stop to the revolving free agency door. I am really disapointed today, becasue this proves that the Redskins have not changed at all. They may be better coached now, but the front office thinking has not changed one bit. very disapointing...

I agree, but just to let you know....Rolle is only 2 years older than Smoot. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
Smoot also has played for Williams. Last year!!
I was commenting on if Samari would fit in here as a skin on defense, I honestly don't feel one way or the other on this one. We don't know how much smoot was offered, and I think if Rolle was offered the same amount as smoot and he takes it, while smoot thinks he should get more, o well life goes on. Its a business and u can't pay for emotional attachments. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
I know Rolle is not over the hill, but he's still older. Two years is two full seasons. When you are only talking about 10-12 year carreers two years is a significant percentage of a players career. This makes no sense to me at all. Smoot you could say is still getting better in this league. Rolle has peeked and if he's better than Smoot now it's only marginally better. This is the kind of move that aggravates me to no end with the Redskins. No matter how much of a Redskins apologist anyone on this site is, there is just no way that anyone in their right mind can justify this move. When the hell will the Redskins stop valueing other teams players more than their own? They talk about core redskins and wanting to play here. It's a f-ing 2 way street Danny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to really dislike the way Fred played. But after the last 2 seasons I have changed my mind. He has heart!!!
You cant play on heart alone . Smoot is the furthest from a shutdown corner and Rolle, when healthy is. Remember this he flourished under Greg Williams in Tennesee and he will again here. Re: Samari or Freddy?
As I understand it Smoot and co. are official free agents tonight (on the 1st) and can sign with other teams tomorrow on the 2nd I think .
The coaches and everyone might want Smoot back but there has to be a plan B if we sit on our hands and wait for Smoot to decide or not to come back here any top FA will be gone and Smoot could turn aroundand simply say he has a better offer elsewhere, then we are up a certian creak without a padle. By at least geting your name in the hat for top CB prospects then it gives you a fall back position . I truely think and it is not a Redskins thing here agents representing all kinds of players are waiting till free agency ... |

Re: Samari or Freddy?
I don't know how credible this report is and i didn't trust the coles one when i heard it and now it is accepted that it is not gonna happen. Remember we won't hurt our team expecially here. We may feel smoot is amazing and if we are gonna pay rolle more it must be because he is better or that if smoot has now fallen back on the deal. GW is not stupid we jumped 22 spots in d and that is his credit and he will not hinder the team. ROLLE is not "old" he may be older but not old. I think shawn springs is better than smoot and he is also older. Springs averaged 11.6666 games the three seasons before he got here and got the same amount of INTs this year as he did those three years. People said he couldn't replace Bailey but i would not take bailey back in replacement of springs. Rolle is also said to be faster than smoot and the speed on our defense is elite and will get better. Rolle also got the sacks with williams in the begginning, think of two CBs like that and we would have 2 shut down CBs along with the best free saftey and bowen or clark who are just amazing additions.
EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT, I TRUST THE TEAM ENOUGH NOT TO HURT ITSELF. THERE IS A REASON |

EXACTLY! |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
Rolle is a top 10 corner, sorry guys but Smoot isn't quite there yet. More like top 15.
If Smoot and Rolle are both looking for the same money, Rolle is the better player therefore the better value. Don't forget Williams coached Rolle and probably feels he's a better fit in his defense. That's the only thing that's making me feel ok about this deal. If Williams wants Rolle and we have to let Smoot walk, I'm ok with that if that's what Coach Williams wants. Nobody can question his ability to put together a top notch defense. |
Re: Samari or Freddy?
Rolle is 28 and Smoot is 26, so let's stop with the silly older player comments, it's not like Rolle is 38, that would be a concern. 2 years is not a concern in the grand scheme of things.
