Well, it really depends upon the situation. I mean, there are such things as ECOs and TDOs (Emergency Custody Orders, Temporary Detention Orders) that are issued by a court once our emergency clinicians have evaluated the individual. They either voluntarily come off the street and seek services, or they're arrested for something and the police requests a clinician to come and evaluate the individual. So, it's not always that they come into our facility, our clinicians are prepared to go out and see them. Not that it's going to prevent every situation like what happened today, but it's possible that there may have been several like situations that have been prevented because of our behavioral health services.

We all can agree that people who do these things are not in their right minds, but where we all may disagree is how did they get to this point? Was it genetic, was it some experience that happened in their lives? Was it drugs? Was it alcohol? What was it?

A senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation says a brother of the alleged shooter was found dead in a home searched in Hoboken, New Jersey. We already knew the suspect's mother was found dead in the elementary school.

Gonna be a lot of conflicting information coming out for awhile.

[Updated at 3:54 p.m.] Three guns were found at the scene, CNN's Susan Candiotti reports. According to a law enforcement source, the third weapon found on the scene was a .223 Bushmaster. The other weapons, previously reported, are a Glock, and a Sig-Sauer. No word on the models of Glock or Sig-Sauer.

Guy came to rumble. Sick. Guy takes out his whole family and innocent children. Makes you wonder about people, ya know?

its just disgusting. i just dont understand why we allow crazy people to walk around with assault rifles, its just as baffling.

For those that don't have children here is one way I describe having kids.

Ever almost fall and you get the tense feeling where you like stiffen up and you get kind of butterflies. Before I had kids I alone got that for myself. Now if I see them about to fall or get hurt that same exact feeling floods over me but I am perfectly safe. It is weird but that is how connected you are to them.

The reporting has also been pretty sick if you ask me. If this happened at my daughters school and a reporter stuck a mic in her face I'd kick that SOB's ass. Strang thing is the parents are allowing their children to be interviewed. The media has no business being allowed on the school grounds and they need to back off. The reporting was also way off just to be the first to report what they thought were facts.

"Hear 3rd graders first hand account" - NO THANK YOU!
These kids had so much taken from them today; shoving a camera and a microphone in their face isn't going to help anyone. Let the counselors and parents do their jobs to help these poor kids.

Words fail me ... been holding my 5 year old extra tight tonight.

I can't imagine the hell those families are going through. Although I know there isn't, I wish there was some way to give them some relief from there pain. Prayers & thoughts are all I have to offer.

If I had guns in my house, I'd keep them locked up in a safe and hidden. Can't trust anyone. No need to have an assault weapon laying around.

Good, at least some people in the media have more integrity than that. I mean damn, these kids just witnessed something that could traumatize them for the rest of their lives and a reporter's first thought is to put a mic in their face? How do they sleep at night?

I'm at a loss for words right now. I just have a hard time understanding what could cultivate someone, even someone disabled, to do something as horrible as this.

The fact that he killed a huge majority of his own family tells you something went wrong mentally or he had some serious hate within him.

According to the reports, his brother being questioned said he hadn't talked to his brother in years. That says to me that something is wrong with that family structure that they don't even communicate.

Something's kinda weird about a kindergarten teacher owning an assault weapon. Rest her soul but still, if you have a son with an emotional disturbance and you're keeping weapons in the house? That seems like a pressure cooker. Then again, I'm not sure if the son was even still living with the mother. It'll be interesting to have all these kinda of questions cleared up in the coming days.

Really sad and tragic. Let us remember those that lost loved ones and not these jerks that did the shooting. As such a tragic day not just in CT but in the USA! Parents will have not just a miserable holiday season this year, but for all seasons to come! :(

The United States averages 9 gun deaths per 100,000 people per year. Canada averages 4.78. France averages 3. Australia, 2.94. Norway, 1.78. Greece, 1.50. Germany, 1.10. Spain, 0.63. The Netherlands, 0.46. United Kingdom, 0.22. Japan, 0.07.

If you think it is impossible for gun control laws to work, then you must believe we are more violent than the people of all of these nations. That is the wrong kind of exceptional.

I know he was autistic. I know autistics that are just not capable of this, but they are reporting it as if he may have had a severe case. So ****ing terrible. My daughter is in kindergarten and my wife is her art teacher. I have always said there should be armed security gaurds and or metal detectors at every school. It is way to easy to walk rite into a school. I am praying for every victims parents, family , and friends. Cannot and do not want to imagine where their heads are ag rite now. I also find myself wondering why his mothers weapons were not securely locked up. From what im hearing he was obsessed witb guns. His mom was a kindergarten teacher but was not at school today. God bless all of our children tonite. Hug the shit out of them tomorrow.

Where's it say he was autistic? All I've seen is that he had a personality disorder, but hasn't been identified by name.

Oh God no. Just pointing out that I heard that. Every individual is different , autistic or not. @Rave - the initial reports were that he had autism, i heard it on tv.
Edit: initially they were saying the shooters mother was a teacher at the school too.

My nephew has a very mild "form or case" of aspergers. Again every individual is different. Not sure how he got his hands on the guns in the first place but i know if i had guns there is no way my children would have anyway to get them. That is what gun cases are for. You dont just leave a key laying around. Im hearing now the mother was a doomsday prepper?

That's what I was thinking. Kinda weird for a retired school teacher to have so many guns, including an assault weapon and she's just living with her son. Heard she was also a bit frigid towards him. Something about that living situation seems a little off.
