Re: Thread Series: The case for/against Tyrann Mathieu

He is a talented football player that is undersized. However judging the type of player the redskins have been drafting lately, team captains, locker room leaders, on the field leaders, this guy does not fit that recent trend. So on that point alone I do not see the Redskins drafting this troubled player unless he drops to the fourth round or below and that is not going to happen.
Bottom line: we have to many needs and this draft is to deep to be taking a chance on a player with a troubled past.

Re: Thread Series: The case for/against Tyrann Mathieu

His size shouldn't be an issue, it's whether he is meant to play safety or corner, and if his head is on straight.

Mathieu is pretty much a no-brainer to me if he's still available in the third round.

I'm rolling with whatever the FO thinks, but if he's there in the 4th then make that phone call. We had Banks on the team for 2 years and IMO he did nothing at least this guy plays corner and ST.

Re: Thread Series: The case for/against Tyrann Mathieu

Third or Fourth Round, Like Mike Mayock said from NFL Network, Redskins should not take him until the end of the third or risk taking him in the fourth.

Great instincts, even though I do not see him as a safety because I think he maxed out his frame at 186 and if he tries to build more muscle he won't have much flexibility, just be a worst Laron Landry.

But as your 3rd or 4th corner/punt returner, he is worth a late 3rd/4th round pick. I wouldn't trust him to cover Victor Cruz one on one, feel like he would beat him pretty often, like Tavon Austin, The entire Alabama receiving core, and Rogers did. But if the Redskins would be willing to play more zone, he would do well.

Like many of said, its not necessarily that he can play any position, its more of the fact that he really does not have a position, not good enough in man or has the size to play on the outside, not big enough to play safety consistently and there was a reason LSU rarely used him to cover deep parts of the field. Great playmaker but has huge weaknesses that a defense coordinator would have to build around.
Those are good points.

IMO his size, off field red flags and lack of college football experience makes him a no pick or a 5th through 7th round pick. There is better talent out there.
I wouldn't say he has a lack of college football experience, and I have been saying since his Sophomore year, I will not hesitate to draft him in the 2nd, 3rd, whenever. If he is our guy or the guy Shanny wants better a round "too" early than a pick too late.
You simply can't teach the skills that Mathieu has. He almost reminds me of a smaller #21. The guy looks like he was born to play football. I'd love to see this kid in burgundy and gold and become a star.
I didn't want to be the first to throw these two in the same breath. I think he plays at the same emotional level that Sean did. I would like to have him at the right time in the draft. I think the 3rd is too risky, but we need to look at's whats on the board at that time. What's the downside? We burn this years 3rd rounder, sign him cheap for 2 years and see what happens.

5'9 DBs are still all over the NFL...

Not sure where he is drafted, probably no earlier then 4th.

Or they can tell him how hard it is to hide a drug problem and that the NFL will suspend your ass with the quickness.

As NFLdraftscout said on Twitter, someone wants mathieu to fall in the draft.

I knew he failed drug tests in college but I thought it was 2-4, not 10. Holy smokes. And how LSU doesn't get penalized is beyond me.

Right I had heard that could be motivation. I just think its pretty sad you can keep failing drug test and playing, but accept a steak dinner from someone and its time to shut down the entire program.

Er, it wasn't just 10 failed drug tests. When asked how many, “I quit counting at 10,” Mathieu answered. “I really don’t know.”

D Green was one of the most athletic and fastest players to ever play in the NFL. And this was before half the leauge was taking adderall.

I watched Darrel Green, I knew Darrel Green, Darrel Green was a friend of mine. Tyrann Mathieu is no Darrel Green.

Seriously, though. I really don't know the guy's play. From what I have seen, it he looks like a very good college player whose talent makes him an average NFL DB. Add in the off-field issues, I am fine with whatever the FO thinks about him. Personally, with the depth of this draft at his position, I would rather go with the "safer" pick at 2 and 3. If he's there in the 4th, fine.

Also, I get the feeling he would be one of those fan polarizing players (think D.Hall) and, I, for one, I have enough of that drama.

Mathieu is Janoris Jenkins 2.0, if he falls into the late 3rd round or below, I think we should go after him. People knocked my man Russell Wilson for being short too and we all know how that turned out. I'm all aboard for the Mathieu Train. Choo choo....
