That's right, Baker. If either of those guys can be effective/consistent Cofield as backup DE gives me some piece of mind. It's really about Jenkins stepping up though. I thought he looked hesitant too often last year. |

pretty big news if this is the case. "Both Mike Shanahan and Jim Haslett have indicated that the team will give Jackson a shot once he is eligible to return. Kudos to Cofield. I thought last year was his best too. Per the DE sitz, with both Cofield and Baker able to backup there I think we're in pretty good shape. Jenkins is still the X factor on the line as Bown and Cofield are solid. |
only if you want to give him a backloaded/high bonus vinny type contract, which we've been steering away from lately.
Not at all. You only need to have the first year with a lower number. A lot of the contracts tend to have a lower first year salary anyways due to bonus money being paid early, even from Shanny and Allen. Look at Garcons contract. 2.1 mil base salary last year with a cap hit of 4.7 mil, 5.6 mil base salary this year with a cap hit of 8.2 mil. Most teams do it that way. They escalate the annual salary so that if they cut the player before they finish the contract, they are paying out less than if they had the annual salary stayed the same through every year. |

Re: Redskins News & Notes Chapter 6
So I stopped off at the grocery store today after work to pick up a couple of the NFL Season Preview magazines. I decided to get two (Lindys and Sporting News) and was going to get Pro Football Weekly's (which is out of business, yet had the magazine out so this might be their last one) magazine. I went to skim through it and saw that they had the Redskins finishing 3rd in the division. I immediately put it down saying to myself "now I know why you all went out of business," and bought the other two.
I just started reading through the other two. Lindys has us finishing 2nd (which is respectable/more understandable) saying that basically they didn't pick us first because they thought we had too much what ifs regarding RG3s health. And who did they have finishing 1st? The frickin' cowboys who just got a new defense, got beat by us twice last year, and have Romo as their QB. Then I looked through the Sporting News Magazine. Sporting News has us finishing 4th in the NFC East, and has us as the 23rd best team in the NFL. Their reasoning is something along the lines of "theres a lot of change in the NFCE and new champions from year to year with some years the winner finishes last, and with RG3s injury it doesn't make our case better." Now sure some of these magazines were made almost a month ago, but still it was almost 2 months ago that RG3 was already being talked about being ready for the first game of the season. A few other things to mention about the magazines: - Sporting News gave our draft a D, and failed to even mention Rambo, or Reeds names. - Both magazines said very good things about our DL; I, along with others here last year, didn't think they were that great, just OK/Solid. - To go on about this now even more meaningless magazines, Sporting News had the Giants winning the NFCE (1), Lindy's had them finishing dead last (4).. - A "scout from another team" said that RG3 isn't "a progression-type QB...when he's in the gun, when he has to read defenses, he has a long ways to go." - both magazines have the Broncos reaching the super bowl - EJ Biggers is rated by Lindy's as the 5th best NB in the NFL (they do a position by position ranking, ie No. 1 CB's, No. 2 CB's, NBs) |

This article says what a lot of us have been saying for a while. The read option doesn't expose RG3 to injury; rather scrambling is the problem. This next season, I hope RG3 utilizes the sideline more instead of taking the hits. |

Amerson, hall, Wilson, Biggers, Crawford, 6th? Thomas, Merriweather Rambo, Jackson, Pugh (PS) Gomes gone who else or will we even keep 8 defensive backs? Any one have any idea how that plays out? |
Re: Redskins News & Notes Chapter 6
Cult - I'm kinda surprised by the comments and predictions in the magazines. Based on the progress of healing, Griffin isn't going to miss that many games. Granted, we haven't seen enough of Cousins yet to determine that he actually is a starting QB material but the way we ended the season (not counting Seattle game), the team started to gel together. Enough to help Cousins to win games. If Cousins played bad at the Browns game then I would be worried but after that game and how he rallied at ending of the Baltimore game, I'm convinced he can win us some games.
Based on last season, our defense wasn't good so I guess it kind of make sense to at least assume that the defense won't improve much. It doesn't to me but I could see why some people would think that. I love the idea of flying under radar so if many people actually believe that then I'm happy. |
I looked at two mags and both had us 4th in the division, I was shocked and honestly don't get it. I just hope the Skins put their stamp on the division this year and prove them all wrong.

The addition of Amerson, Phillip Thomas, Bacarri Rambo, Tanard Jackson, E.J. Biggers and Brandon Merriweather to our secondary in one offseason is a HUGE upgrade from last years secondary. Keep in mind that Josh Wilson played injured last season and is hopefully coming back healthy and add decent holdovers DeAngelo Hall, Reed Doughty, Richard Crawford and DeJon Gomes. In a short time we have cheaply added a ton more talent, athleticism and NFL caliber ability to what was a weak ass secondary. Tanard will add much needed NFL experience/skill to a young safety position and will serve as an on field coach to Rambo/Thomas. There is no risk in Tanard because if he gets caught blazing the cheeb again we do not have to pay him or have him count against the cap and we have the depth to deal with losing him. IN the series or two I saw Tanard play in last preseason the guy is a player. Bring him back if he is in shape and ready to play. Have I mentioned I love the job Allen/Shanahan/Haslett/Raheem Morris/Bobby Turner and FO have done? We finally have depth! Not since 1992 can I finally finally say have the start of a formidable roster. HTTR! |
Re: Redskins News & Notes Chapter 6
We have so many quality DBs now, it's insane how much changed in one offseason WITHOUT cap money.
We're going to have to release some of them. There's not enough roster spots for this many defensive backs? Who? Gomes? Doughty? Pugh? Berstine? Can Crawford any Minnifield even find a spot behind Wilson, Hall, Amerson, Biggers? This season's defense is going to be like night and day compared to 2012. I'm willing to say we have a top-5 offense AND a top-5 defense. |

That's a joke that is not even funny. Philly and Dallas will continue to be chaotic messes. New York lost a LOT over the offseason. Ironic that they don't know how to handle a tight salary cap situation like us. They're on the down side of the mountain. I don't see how we don't dominate this division. |

He's not a very good WR. If we use Aldrick right, he's an adequate option with a longer shelf life and cheaper cost. |

If we use Aldrick right, he's an adequate option with a longer shelf life and cheaper cost.
Hester's only use would be as a return man, and we already got some options there. I can't see him realistically competing for a spot as just as a WR with our current corps. |

Its pretty nice that we can say no to some vets due to having young players that can develop into better options (or already are better options). Having depth and roster competition is making everyone on the team better. |

Football Outsiders DVOA - Redskins the best!
According to FootballOutsiders.com, no NFL team in 2012 utilized play-action more — and better — than the Redskins. Washington, which used play-action on 42 percent of its plays, posted an NFL-best defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA) rating when faking the pass and throwing the ball. DVOA measures how a team fares relative to the league average in certain situations and considers numerous factors, including the quality of opposition. The Redskins’ play-action offense was likely helped by numerous factors, with a mobile, accurate, strong-armed quarterback in Robert Griffin III one major reason Washington’s play-fakes vexed the opposition. Moreover, Washington has a robust running game that very much needed to be respected. More of the same this season! |
