Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
I hope you aren't suggesting Senators as a name for the Redskins...no way in hell we should name our team after the most corrupt people in the nation and the people who would be helping flush our team's tradition down a $60,000 gold-handled toilet in the Capitol Building.
If it really comes down to legally being forced to change our name (Good bye 1st Amendment), we should keep the B&G and change to Braves or Warriors. "Braves on the Warpath, Right for old D.C." will still work and it's our original name. Of course, the real racists starting this argument will probably be offended by that name too, so I guess Warriors would be something to sttle for. But, I will never call the team by the new, "politically-correct" name whatever it is. This team will ALWAYS be the Redskins to me and I'll still cheer for the Redskins vocally. I still have not accepted the cheesy Wizards name...I still hope the Bullets name returns but that won't happen during this Presidency obviously. Credit to them for ditching those ugly blue and gold uniforms for the new Bullets-esque set, that's how the team should look.
I agree. I actually think Braves would be the best, because it is a part of our history, already in our fight song, ect. I'd also be fine with PigSkins/HogSkins (although I know alot of people hate it)... and as much as I can't stand him, I did think Mike Wise had a great idea of changing to the Warriors, and having it pay homage to Veterans/Wounded Warriors, ect.... That said, I hope we never change. |

Too much emotion/bias is wrapped up in it no doubt. I know that a majority of people don't view it as a big issue based on poll numbers, but I don't think that automatically makes it insignificant or something that shouldn't at least be considered. |

I agree with that. I have no allegiance to the name Redskins rather to the football team that represents the city I love. Teams change names it has happened throughout the history of organized sports some of it has been voluntary others have had some sort of mutual coercion. Society, regardless of whether you agree with it or not, will always continue to change what it values |

Camo alternate uniform! :D RGIII would be for that too, I bet. It would also make us as an organization look like the better people on this issue, which we are already. While the opposition is creating racial divides and filing lawsuits, we honor the heroes of our country. Then, the protesters will just make new signs and show screaming that we're promoting war, violence, depressing foreign countries and guns for children. You cannot please these people, they make a living stirring up trouble and protesting. The rent-a-mobs need something to punch their timecards with. Of course, preference is keeping our real name. |

We could always go this route:

Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
I never understood why there was such an opposition to a name change. As long as the team stays in DC (or the DC area) I will be their fan no matter what they are called.
I do believe there should be a discussion, and Snyder should not be so dismissive but I have heard from reporters that is part of his personality at times. I'll say this, if the team would be allowed to move back in to the city and get a brand new stadium and the city would be willing to give money if the team changed their name, I would want a name change. Other than that, I am not a Native American so I cannot say if it is offensive or not and I do not know the history of the term. |

That Frog Picture made me spit out my coffee. Love that you called them the "Maryland Frogs too".
Those Warriors uniforms are badass. That 2002 look was my favorite Skins' alternate ever. |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
I'd prefer the team move to Virginia and away from the morals toilet of D.C. before changing the team nickname. I'm a Redskins fan.
Snyder is being dismissive because a.) he owns the team, b.) this false issue has been pushed for decades I don't want the team to get bribed or blackmailed by politicians with a new stadium in exchange for throwing 80 years of tradition away. I'm glad Snyder is taking a stand for something he believes in and I'm glad he values our team's history and tradition enough to fight for it. He's not willing to sell his beliefs for a shiny new stadium and Super Bowl venue. I appreciate that of our owner. |

Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
Im not sure why people keep recommending the Warriors as an alternative name. If we are changing from Redskins, why would we change to a name that the people against Redskins say is derogatory to Indians? The Indians fighting against Redskins are going to go after the name Warriors for being derogatory to Indians if they can get the name Redskins to fall. They have already given their view of the name Warriors and they feel it should not be allowed.

But taking the Green Bay protestors at their word, they are offended at NAs being called "warriors". So that name should be a non-starter in reference to Indians, if the name has to be changed. Washington Sentinels, or go Washington Warriors with a modern US Army motif would make more sense. Camo or standard drabber colors? Represent a demographic that isn't "offended" by the name, and appreciates us cheering for them. |

Now Warriors is derogatory? We need to just move to London and be the Sillynannies because it's seriously moving in that direction. |

They are against Chiefs, Braves, Indians, Warriors, Seminoles, Blackhawks, Fighting Illini, etc. to be changed. The NCAA already adopted that rule. Thats why Marquette changed from Warriors to Eagles and Stanford changed from Indians to Cardinals. The NCAA has a rule that if an Indian tribe ok's a name, then it can stay. Which is why Florida St. was allowed to keep Seminoles. Which prompted Suzan Harjo to say that the Seminole tribe in Florida that ok'd the name are a bunch of sell outs. |

It is seen as creating an unfortunate stereotype. If we were the "Warriors" with a nuclear missile as an emblem, things would be different. |

The nickname has always been Warriors but they changed from an Native American to a Robin Hood-looking guy since the school name is Sherwood HS. I think they also use a knight sometimes. (ironically, European Americans couldn't care less about this, but whatever). I believe the Golden State Warriors kind of did the same thing. |
Warriors is such a broad term.

Warriors is specific to Indians according to her. The ones doing the fighting for Indians were called Warriors or Braves. If we are doing away with a name that some Indians say is derogatory to them to another name that Indians say is derogatory to them seems somewhat ridiculous to me. Im against changing the name, but if we do, we shouldnt go right back to what is considered derogatory by a handful of people. Amanda Blackhorse has already said that if they can get Redskins to fall, they are going to try to get all of them changed. But they dont want to get people against them that support all the other names for now. They hate the Warriors being used as a name and flat out call it derogatory to them. If we are going to allow the Indians complaining to decide sports names, then we shouldnt allow any of these names to be used. How 'Indian' mascots oppress - Issues- Native Circle This site points out most of the names that is called Racist by the ones fighting against the names. If the ones calling Redskins racist also call Warriors racist (which they absolutely do), then its pointless to change to Warriors. |

Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
I've always thought the name Warriors was kind of cool (particularly with the Washington alliteration). I know Snyder bought the rights to the name to coincide with the possible expansion of an Arena team to the DC area (latest on that by the way: Proposed Arena Could Bring Football Team to D.C. Region « CBS DC) but the rights to the team and name did expire from what I understand and I'm not sure he renewed them (most likely he did though).
But anyhow, I think it would bother me if those who opposed the name because it depicts NAs as savages, or warriors, would be ok with the name Warriors. I mean how is one ok, and the other not? I asked Mike Wise this specific question when he suggested Warriors. He said as long as they're was no deragotoray logo. So I asked him if it's the Redskins name or logo that bothers him. He said both. But still I found it a bit odd for him to say Redskins bothers him because of what it depicts, but then suggests using one of those adjectives in description as one of the new names. |
Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000
I am so offended by people being offended and find it incredibly offensive that offense is being taken others. As offended as I am, it is not nearly as offensive as those who do not take offense at the offense at which others are offended. In fact, the entire debate is clearly far to offensive for anyone not to be offended and the mere fact that you are not offended should be cause for great offense in the media.
Now, if we could only get some of that great offense to take place on the field, I'd be much less offended. |

In 2011, the poverty rate on reservations was 28.4 percent, compared with 22 percent among all American Indians (on and off reservations), and 15.3 percent among all Americans. In addition to poverty rates, reservations are hindered by low education levels, poor healthcare services, low employment, substandard housing, and deficient economic infrastructure.
But yeah, having Daniel Snyder change the Redskins name is way more important!!! :Flush: |
