Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
We need to stay far away from Nicks. He pouted and cried for more money than Cruz, so what did he do in his contract year? He sucked. Big time. No touchdowns and looked like he was giving half effort most of the time. Plus, he's injured pretty often.
He's going to want too much money for what he's worth and probably won't be on the field half of the games if we sign him.
i would be shocked if anyone gives him a big deal, i think he is gonna get a 1 year deal to "prove it". No risk to bring him in on that kinda deal. |

Nicks could not catch this year. He's to blame for a lot of Eli's INTs. |

We're going to have to settle for some stop-gaps. We have more holes than money despite the huge influx of cap space. From that list, I like Collins, Rinehart (should never have let him go), Daryl Smith and Grimes. James Jones too, if we can't draft a #2 WR. He's been around for a while, but only 29 and solid. He'd be a big upgrade over Hankerson/Morgan/Moss/Robinson. Morgan and Moss are probably gone. Moss can still play but not for what we're paying him. Morgan has been overpaid from day 1 but with the cap penalty, he's the best we could afford. |

I say keep Niles Paul, he's our best ST player.

Nicks is going to Carolina

I would say that much differently. The amount of cap space we'll have is near endless. The problem is there won't be enough impact players available who fit our system, so Bruce will do the smart thing and find stopgaps instead of overcomitting to players who don't fit. |
Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
I personally think both Bowen and Carriker need to be let go.Bowen will cost us over 7 mil against the cap and really hasn't done jack the last 2 yrs.1 sack 4 pd and 5 TFL in the last 2 seasons? Carriker is due nearly 7 mill and he hasn't played in 2 yrs.I like Carriker but he is more body builder than football player.
Not sure how much of that is Guaranteed but i'm sure the release of those 2 would clear up some more space.Does that create a hole? Sure but is that position not a hole as it is? Why not clear some space to actually fill it instead of hanging on to these 2? Also Golston will cost over a mill and he should have been let go yrs ago. This is one of the reasons i was hoping we would move to a 4-3 base. Even with the release of these 3 (and the cap space that would free up) we would still have Cofield , Jenkins and Neild at the DT position with Rak( franchised) and Kerrigan at DE. I think all of those guys are better fits in a 4-3 than a 3-4
Hey guys I have been reading the salary cap info for years on this site and find it very informative. No other Redskins' fan forum gets this indepth and I am intrigued by the cap for whatever reason so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. These suggestions made about releases are pretty good but some would result in a lot of "dead" money. I have a spreadsheet I made that is heavily based on Spotrac but that includes a column of possible savings. I'd like to post it for you guys if you'd like but not sure how to add attachments. According to the our $ carryover and potential 2014 cap of $126.3mill (from what I've read) our cap space will be just under $36mill. This is already great but we can get additional space with the following moves: One of the biggest savings would be to cut Adam Carriker outright who is scheduled to earn $6.7mill. Although he would cost $3.5 mill in dead money his savings would be just over $3.2 mill. Also another big savings would be getting rid of Chris Chester. He counts for $4.3mill against the cap and cutting him, even though it would cost $1.6mill in dead money, the savings would be $2.7mill. Unfortunately Steven Bowen's $7mill cap figure and resulting cut would be over $5mill of dead money so only about $2mill in total savings. Maybe worth it still I'm not sure. They should definitely get him to take some sort of pay cut IMO. Kedric Golston would be a good cut savings wise. His $1.1mill salary would only have $240k of dead money so about $900k of cap savings right there. I don't want to step on anyone's toes but let me know if you guys want a copy and how I can post it then you can play around with it yourselves. :) |

You can count on one hand the amount of available talent that can:
1) improve the roster 2) do so without costing a contract that will look bad in the future So the team may have 14 spots where improvement is needed, but if you can get five or six reasonably priced players (reasonable is relative, you can give big bucks for a great talent) to come in and plug holes, you've done well. And you still have 7-8 holes. The good news is that there are zero teams who will enter next season with no holes (even Seattle is going to have some issues on the OL), so the goal of the offseason isn't to fill all the holes. It's to take a situation that's bad (we have too many weaknesses) and add players who can help. Level the playing field a bit, so that when you draft/develop your stars: Griffin/Williams/Morris/Orakpo etc, the veterans on the team are competent enough to handle their assignments. |

Despite his talent, they can have him IMO. Anyone who lollygags through a contract year is not someone you want in a championship locker room. |
Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
Yeah between Nicks and Maclin I'm on board signing Maclin to a incentive filled one or two year contract. My ideal choice is Decker, but I know the money difference between signing Maclin and Decker could allow the signing of one if not two offensive linemen or just in general two mid level contracts.

I can never figure how much you actually save when you cut guys because of the way the contracts are structured. I'm not sure how you could post aside from cut and paste (new to the site) but i would like to take a look at your spreadsheet. According to my math cutting those 4 would free up just under 9 mill. To me that is more valuable to us than those 4 by a long shot IMO. Chester was a bad signing and he played soft all of last season. He needs to be replaced and upgraded. I think a rookie could give us at least as much production out the gate with the potential to grow at a much lower price. Carriker clearly has to be cut. There is no way to justify paying him that much. He has had 1 good year (2011) and even then he was ranked very low as a run defender. Bowen was also good in 2011 but has been a non-factor since. The dead money part sucks but if he isn't producing and cutting him saves 2 mill plus opens up a roster spot to bring in someone who can (or has the potential to) i think thats the way to go. Golston never has been anything more than a big body and he is one of the poster boys for the good guy, good in the locker room types that we hold on to even though they bring nothing to this team on the field. Needs to be let go just for the sake of opening up a roster spot. The money saved is just gravy If you are right and we have 36 mil to work with before these cuts that would put us at almost 45 mil when/if we made them. I would be interested in seeing if we would save anything substantial for cutting Lichtenstiger. I think he is set to make something in the 3 mill range which isn't much but that guy just doesn't look like an NFL OL. I think if he stays he should move to C. He usually gives up about 40 lbs to the people he is trying to block. Can't be to surprised when they just walk him into the backfield every time we pass. |
Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
Thanks D.O, it looks like I am not able to post attachments on here (says so on my "posting rules" at the bottom left of my page). If you'd like send me your email address and I will email the spreadsheet to you. I agree with you on the Carriker, Golston and Chester releases or at the very least pay cuts. I think Bowen would be better let go next year (less dead money according to spotrac).
Also another one that is listed on their site as counting towards the cap is Brandon Meriweather. I have read in other spots that he is a free agent but if that's not the case and they can release him, his cap figure is $3.4mill with $1.2mill of dead money. That's another savings of $2.2mill. That one to me is a no brainer. How about Sav Rocca? Slated to make $1.3mill with only a $162k of dead money for a savings of $1.2mill. Another no brainer IMO. See ya Sav. |
Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
I know it gets posted frequently, but short of CrazyCanuck's salary cap sheets which you can find on this forum, Overthecap.com shows every team's cap situation for the next 4 years. It lists out every player's cap number, the deadcap/savings if you were to cut them, and basically gives you most every number crunch that you would wonder about. It's an excellent site for cap curious individuals.

Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
Warpath cap sheets have been updated for 2014. They should be online in the near future.
I have us with about $17M of cap room right now. Voiding the contracts of Fletcher, Merriweather, and Morgan (as mentioned in the article below) saves $13M. This brings our current cap room to about $30M. Agent's Take: Raiders top list of teams with best 2014 cap situation - CBSSports.com "8. Washington Redskins Salary cap room: $28,055,889 Adjusted salary cap: $127,893,111 The Redskins will gain $14.5 million in cap room when the remaining years of four contracts (London Fletcher, Brandon Meriweather, Josh Morgan, Brian Orakpo) void a few days after the Super Bowl. The lack of 2013 and '14 first-round draft picks because of the Robert Griffin III trade increases the likelihood the Redskins will be aggressive in free agency. The most important player headed to free agency is Orakpo. The two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker has 10 sacks in his return from tearing his left pectoral muscle last season for a second time. Since Orakpo views himself as an elite pass rusher, it will probably require a long-term deal in excess of $10 million per year with over $30 million in guarantees to retain him. Using the franchise tag, which will be right around $11 million for linebackers, is also an option. Revamping the secondary should be the top priority for the Redskins. The play of the safeties has been a long-standing issue for the Redskins. Jairus Byrd could be a possibility if the Buffalo Bills don't use a franchise tag on him for a second straight year. The Redskins could also renew their pursuit of cornerback Aqib Talib, assuming he isn't designated as a franchise player by the New England Patriots. Talib was targeted in free agency this year but Washington's cap penalties were an obstacle in signing him. He could be looking for a contract between the Jason McCourty (slightly more than $8.6 million per year, $17 million in guarantees) and Brandon Carr/Cortland Finnegan neighborhoods ($10 million average per year, $26.5 million-$27 million in guarantees) provided he can regain the form he displayed early in the season before injuring his hip." |

Jacksonville or Seattle are the obvious exceptions. If Oakland loses Lamarr Houston, they're in as well. The 3-4 teams would obviously be willing to go to 10 or 11 for Orakpo, but I'm not sure how many established 3-4 teams are short a pass rusher. Cleveland has cap space, but they just invested in Mingo and Kruger last year. The Bears are a threat once they release Peppers. The Colts aren't going to part with Mathis, so they're not in on it. Ditto Suggs and the Ravens. Woodley and the Steelers. The Packers and Matthews. The Jets are a real threat though. As are the Patriots, but they can be priced out at $10 million. I think those are the biggest threats for Orakpo: Seattle, Jacksonville, Chicago, and the Jets. We should be able to make best offer. But it might go to $11 million. |

Re: 2014 salary cap....and the money we have
And Orakpo wouldn't be cheap for them. But he might take a little bit less to go there. That Leo position is perfect for his skill set.
Jacksonville too, but I don't know Orakpo well enough if he'd go to Jacksonville on the idea that they have a brighter future than the Redskins. That'd be a pretty aggressive stretch based only off this season. Chicago though, man, he'd really be the centerpiece of a defense that needs more pieces. |

I bet their GM and Carroll wished they hadn't done the deal for Harvin. What has Harvin provided for Seattle so far? They could have just kept their picks and saved the money. He's obviously not a top wr cause he can't stay on the field. I think they thought that he was the one player that could push them over the top. They were wrong. They're already a great team w/out him. |

I don't blame you for wanting to live in Ontario even though we are getting taxed to death as well. If it's any consolation the winter this year sucks donkey balls as well. I still love Montreal, but maybe it's just mostly Crescent street and the "scenery" ;) Ok so we are close. The only discrepancy I have is that you are around $30mill and I'm at $33 but if I take Meriweather out then I'd have an additional $2.2M of savings so then $35M total. Sounds good once you post your sheets we can compare closer. |
