NFL.com is reporting 4 yrs, $17 mil, $5.25 guaranteed, $3.25 of it in a signing bonus. That's not bad at all from a cap perspective. That's pretty easily managed past 2014.
Yes I would definitely agree. The low guaranteed money here makes me overall pretty happy with this deal.

If this info from NFL.com is right, I'd venture a guess that the 2014 cap hit will be about $2.5M. Not bad.

I like this too. Now if the contract has a clause whereby each time he commits a stupid late hit for 15 yards that extends the opponent's drive, he has to buy dinner for the other starters on defense, I would be even happier.

Re: Redskins resign DeAngelo Hall to 4 Year Deal

Hall is getting paid like a no. 2 corner. He was better than that last year, not so much the years before that.

This is a pretty solid deal for the Redskins. I don't think Hall could have gotten more than this on the open market, and I think it would have been prudent to see what was out there. The CB market is flooded, and Hall's agent did great to get $3+ million in SB money from a team that had a lot of cap space.

On the other hand, if you can negotiate a reasonable contract, it's hard to argue with that. The top corners on the market will sign for a lot more than this.

TJ Ward? Or is he getting tagged?
TJ Ward? Or is he getting tagged?
He's probably second best, but there is a TJ Ward or two that gets to the market every year. Wouldn't go over 5/$20 for Ward.

Chris Clemons from Miami can play a little bit and I'm a big Malcolm Jenkins fan, but this is a weak safety class. Corner is loaded, though.

The safeties in the draft are intriguing, though. Jimmie Ward could be available with the 34th pick.

I don't think we're going to spend big money anywhere except on resigning our own FAs. Bruce Allen said, "We’re going to have to get about 20 new players for this football team.” If we want to do that, players like Byrd and Mack are out of the picture.

20 players, not all are going to be pricey.

you figure 6-8 draft picks. BA seems to be pretty good at moving around in the draft so I figure even without trading KC we probably end up with 8.

3-5 mid level FA's who are competition and priced at about the slots they are filling,

1-3 impact FAs, Byrd or Mack might make a lot of sense, also a solid RT, these are the guys who salary cap room means we have a chance.

and then about 5-8 undrafted rookies or training camp bodies whose salaries will never break the top 51.

He's not talking 20 starting caliber players.

SirLK26 02-19-2014 08:47 PM

Re: Redskins resign DeAngelo Hall to 4 Year Deal

Maybe one elite FA is a possibility. Like I've said before, I'm no cap expert. But after we resign Orakpo, Riley, Baker, Jackson, and Moss, to list some of the most expensive, we'll probably have less than 15 million in space left(unless we tag Orakpo; in that case, it will be considerably less). If you add in an elite FA, you're at less than 10 million in space; with draft picks, UDFAs, and lots of FAs still to sign.

Perhaps I'm way off base and/or not explaining myself very well. If that's the case, I trust someone more cap-knowledgeable than myself will weigh in.

Yeah don't forget, for every player you sign you bump someone else out of the top 51. So sign someone for $750K, you bump out the 51st player whose cap hit is $500K. So the net impact is only $250K.

They'll get a lot of those kind of guys. They can still afford a Byrd if they want.

I was an open advocate for giving dhall the proverbial boot until he put it together this past year. He had good to great efforts versus several top flight WRs. I'm not worried he will relapse. He never struck me as underachieving due to laziness or sloppiness. It was more like he just wasn't very good but tried hard. It seemed he backed off the gambling a bit last season and it made him better overall.

It's funny though, just about a year or two ago, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who wanted Hall back on the team.
Ive been a Hall guy since he got here, and been arguing his case. I felt like he wasnt appreciated by many skins fans though i agree.

People have Darrell Green as their standard, but Darrell Green was a different era and he had a great d-line to work with.

Re: Redskins resign DeAngelo Hall to 4 Year Deal

Hall gives up a lot but he's a big play guy. Gets INTs and tends to return them well. Those can be difference-making plays in a game.

Problem was the rest of our team stunk so bad that even when he made his big plays it wasn't enough to swing the result in our favor.

I've never seen so many wasted defensive TDs in my life!

Have to take the good with the bad and when you weigh it all out, he's OK as a starting CB. Since they got him for a mediocre financial commitment, it's all OK as long as we can land our impact guys at other positions.

Starters Hall and Amerson combined projections in in 2014:

INTs: 15
TDs: 7

Re: Redskins resign DeAngelo Hall to 4 Year Deal

A lot of the polarizing opinions on Hall have moderated as he's gotten older. The salary and cap number has come way down, the performance has gone up each of the last two years, and the frequency of dumb penalties are getting less and less every year. It's a lot harder to find a voice in the industry that thinks Hall sucks. Three years ago, that was consensus opinion.

The Hall truthers (not the Hall fans, the truthers) are still an annoying bunch. You know the guy who thinks Hall wasn't beat even once last season? That's the guy I'm talking about. But that guy is getting harder to find also.

DeAngelo Hall has come back to the Redskins given two separate chances to leave, and that will endear him to the fanbase. As it should.

Hall & Amerson can get it done with help over the top.

Guys like Sherman for instance.. cmon bro you wouldn't look as good as you do if Earl Thomas (a muschamp texas guy man I wish we had) AND Kam Chancellor are zonin out up top ready to jump. Its soooo important he has an elite S to let him play zone. Halls a zone guy. Let him do what he does best it will look like that game vs Manning this past year a lot more often.

That's really the meat and potatoes of it. I'm glad Hall is back and I'm glad he has stepped it up.

Re: Redskins resign DeAngelo Hall to 4 Year Deal

It occurred to me. Given that we still have practically no safeties on the roster, could they be giving thought to moving Hall there? Probably not, dude had a good year last year at CB. And it's not like Tracy Porter and David Amerson make for amazing starting CBs.

But still, the lack of moves at safety thus far at least make me wonder a little if this isn't part of the plan.

Given what some of the CBs have gotten in FA this deal looks pretty solid now.

In some packages maybe, but overall since he's clearly our best corner it wouldn't be the best move.

I would hate that. Last year was the first year he finally got it all figured out and played up to his mouth. If we played him at safety after that I feel like we would be starting all over with him.

With Dallas signing Melton to what I consider a similar contract 4 yr 27 for Hatcher, 4 yr 29 for Melton. Given that Dallas can walkaway after one year, where we have to wait 2 years, which guy would you rather have this season?

edit: sorry, thought i put this in the Hatcher thread

Neither. I'd take Linval Joseph.

This one's simple in my mind. Hatcher. He's not coming off an ACL like Melton is.
