At first I hated our draft, then I got on the computer and studied our draft choices and did some home work on them, I still hate all the picks except for Moses and Seastrunk. I keep hearing the Bashard guy is good, but he ran 4.6 at the combine and his pro day was no better. I even hate the undrafted players. Maybe this is a good sign(although I doubt it). I think we drafted well under Shannahan. Now it looks like we are doing dumb shit again.
----------its the 7th round
True. And while some 7th round picks are ballers, such as Richard Crawford, most don't contribute at all. Also, in Jay's post-draft presser, he basically said that the Redskins were planning to add a rookie kicker to compete with Forbath, so they just took the cream of the crop with their last draft pick to avoid getting into a bidding war later with another team. So I've definitely started to feel better about the move.

Still though, it's unlikely Hocker will be able to unseat Forbath. And even if he can, it'd suck to put Forbath out on the street after finally finding a reliable kicker. The better move would be to find a punter who can also do kickoffs, IMO.

if he ran a 4.4 he wouldn't have been there in the 4th round. he'll never be better than a #3 CB or a safety, but if he's a cheap depth guy/ST guy, that's fine. you need those.

for quake, i bet LeRib is more likely to get cut than start. he's shown a whole lot of nothing. and long has a better shot at playing center than he does.

I think you and I may be two of the few people who think that LeRibeus can play. Still, after his weight and conditioning issues of last season, I don't trust his work ethic. I read that he is in better shape now but he probably has a steep hill to climb to gain the trust of the coaching staff.

Kory can play; he just may not be big enough to be more than the stop-gap at center.

I really can't envision two rookies on the right side to start the season.

Mike McGlynn could win a job at RG or center.

A kicker who cannot put the ball into the end zone is a huge liability on special teams. We need a guy who gets touchbacks most of the time, not returns to the 30 yard line and beyond.

Re: Reaction to Draft: exceeds, meets, or meh

At first I wasn't too thrilled about this draft, however after taking some time to really think about it I like what we have done here.
We beefed up the O-Line, added a pass rusher, got a speed running back, A sure hand catcher, and secondary depth. Also remember none of these guys have been in a NFL weight room or used a NFL nutrition plan.

It's on our coaching staff to develop these guys, the talent and work ethic is there.

Trent Murphy- What I like about this pick is that he has what Rack doesn't... He knows how to use his hands and has multiple move to get to passer. He is was the hardest working player on the Stanford defense. It was also noted that he brings the "Nasty" attitude that you want to hear about.

Morgan Mosses- Many of us wanted him in the second round, getting him in the third is a value pick. Watching him in the Senior Bowl, he can be legit. Coaching him up to play like that all the time will be key. We may finally have our bookends tackles.

Spencer Long- Big, tough, physical, ornery blocker with starter-quality is what is written about him. I think we can use that on this line. Brings the "Nasty", I see spencer as a smarter, younger Incognito without all the PR crap. Future Starter

Bashaud Breeland- He could be the steal of the draft. Considered by many to be a late second round pick, when he bulks up in a NFL weight room, he could become the starter opposite Amerson. He reminds me of Antoine Winfield. A corner who likes to hit.

Ryan Grant- Although he had a week 40 time, he was the top performer in the 3 cone drill at the combine. That means he is quick in space, not straight line speed. His strengths are route running and catching the ball. Another player that needs a NFL workout routine and weight room. working with PG can make him into a superstar.

Lache Seastrunk- Another possible steal. Great compliment speed back. I think being back around RG3 will benefit him on and off the field.

The 2 seventh round picks are camp fodder. Overall good, possible great draft.

Re: Reaction to Draft: exceeds, meets, or meh

I think this was a good draft overall. It's kinda hard to get worked up about a draft when you don't have a first round pick. I like the fact that we haven't done anything flashy during the draft and free agency (other than the D. Jax signing). It seems that in the past, whenever we've done a lot of flashy things in the offseason, they don't translate well into the regular season. I really like the fact that they've targeted hardworking and tough players.

It seems that in addition of bringing hardworking/tough/character players, the team has focused a lot on special team both in the draft and free agency. I'm fine with that, given how terrible the unit was last season (and it really hasn't been good before last year). While I hope that there are some gems in this draft that can become starters (I can see Moses being that), I would be fine with having solid contributors out of this crop of players (and I would like to see significant contribution from second year players as well).

redskins staff said he's healthy right now... but RG3 was "healthy" last year, so...

he had an mcl/pcl from what i read and not an acl (which is worse), but i don't know the lag time between being healed and being back to 100% effective.

I think it depends on how much Trent Murphy, Morgan Moses, and Bashaud Breeland contributes this year. I like these picks, but I'm not patient enough or willing to wait 2-3 years for them to develop. They need to show at least some kind of promise. Spenser Long was a risky pick, but if they did their work then he should contribute as well this year.

If none of these 4 contribute this year, it was a failed draft.

Good call, and I like that quote by Gruden. It sounds like a well reasoned strategy. Competition is good. Even if Kai beats him for the spot, that 7th rounder will result in a better kicker.

Nothing wrong with using a 7th rounder on a kicker. Looking at the numbers Kai definitely didn't have a good season. 24th in FG %, 30th in touchbacks, 32nd net kickoff avg.

I actually liked this draft. I'm a believer that you should usually draft the best available player in the draft, since it's such a shot in the dark.

They easily could have just drafted the highest MLB or Safety to fit our needs, but they went after players who probably won't even start this year.

Random factoid: only 13 players drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft are still with their original teams and only 6 have made a pro bowl. Brian Orakpo is one of them.

Might look a lot better next year if they can't resign Orakpo but still seems like a luxury pick. Hard to imagine him bulking up to much to play inside.

Apparently he came to the combine 10 pounds less then his listed playing weight so he might be a bit of a hard gainer.

3(66) Morgan Moses - OT - UVA - Grade A - Absolutely hate the game of chicken the front office played with the RT spot but it all worked out. 3(78) Spencer Long - OG - Nebraska - Grade C - I would feel a lot better about this pick if he wasn't coming off season ending knee surgery. From the little I've seen he really looks like a solid player. Very nasty and hard working. Kind of wish they took him later but I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting in a couple years. I also wouldn't be surprised if they cut him in a couple years either.

4(102) Bashaud Breeland - CB - Clemson - Grade B+ - I usually loathe CB's but Breeland doesn't seem to fit the stereotypical 'I don't feel like tackling' archetype for CB's. Seems to be very good at bump and run and as long as he's not asked to play on an island he should do really well. Also seems like he was good value for where he was picked.

5(142) Ryan Grant - WR - Tulane - Grade B - WR is a little crowded and I usually cringe at the idea of taking a WR however according to his reports he is excellent ball skills and runs crisp routes. Only knock seems to be he lacks big play speed. Regardless always a place in the league for guys that can catch and run good routes.

6(186) Lache Seastrunk - RB - Baylor - Grade B - For some reason I keep on think his name is Leon Sandcastle. Anyway love the agility and change of direction ability. Not sure if he'll make the team but should at least make the preseason more bearable.

7(217) Ted Bolser - TE - Indiana - Grade C- - Seems decent enough. I guess he could surprise but I'm not sure if he'll stick around. Kind of wish we got Jake Pedersen {TE Wisc}

7(228) Zach Hocker - K - Arkansas - Grade F - I know its a 7th round pick but it kind of feels like a waste. I hadn't posted my opinion because I wanted to wait for the best insight. Using the above, the gpa would be 2.5 and slightly above average. That might be about right, although I don't agree with a failing grade for the 7th round kicker.

The kicker would have been there to sign as an UFA. I know everyone here was high on Skov and I think that would have been the perfect pick for for us as a 7th rounder. It certainly fits a need. That was really my only issue. Never draft a kicker. However they seem comfortable at ILB after minicamp when no one has pads on. SMH...
