Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Why do you care if he gets hurt? Not like a big drop off if KC comes in. Honestly at this point losing Niles hurts more then losing RGIII.
Because if he gets hurt we owe him 16M next year. If he sucks and we cut him, we owe him 0. That said, it shows he still doesn't understand the context. This is preseason, why are you taking hits? To me, Cousins is great until his first INT and he crumbles. RG3 is the same way, but after the first big hit - he gets scared and crumbles. Last night I saw the same team I've been watching for years. It's still early. It's preseason. I saw improvements in the OL play on defense and I think our secondary is better, although Hall may not recover in time for the opener. Here's what I saw last night: Pros: - Preston Smith played well. - Our rushing attack looked good enough to keep us in games. - OL overall improved, still not a superior line, but making strides. - WR group has a lot of talent even without the Jackson in there. - The Redskins players seems to be building a bond. I didnt see that last year. - Cousins and McCoy looked pretty good with/vs backups. Again. Preseason and Game 1. Can't put too much stock in that. - Matt Jones. This kid runs hard. He may be after Morris' spot. Cons: - RG3 did not play well. He only had 8 passes, so the jury isn't out. He got 36-ish yards on those passes. I saw him move to the 2nd read a few times which made me happy. Still question the decision making. Even the bomb to Garcon he wasn't decisive, pumped the ball and threw it to the wrong shoulder. Garcon adjusted and should have caught it. While the result looked okay, I highly doubt that was the plan. - Tackling. Defense was letting them get way too many YAC. Lazy tackling, poor tackling, etc. I was hoping that would change with ol' Haslett outta here. - Missed assignments. What drove me crazy last year was big plays on coverages that were clearly blown. We had one in the endzone. If they catch the ball near our DB, I'm typically much less upset than standing alone. Only Redskins drop wide open TDs. - Special Teams. I think we need to look for a Kai replacement. He's a good kicker, but we have gotta start having our opponent on the 20. Roberts fumbles sometimes, that one was bad. Not worth pulling him off yet. I'd be interested in seeing that tiny guy (#19 I believe) that KC threw to a lot trying that role. - Nothing I saw made me think we can make much noise this year. I hope we're building, but this team, in my opinion, lacks the talent to compete. I simply don't believe in RG3. I hope he proves me wrong. Truly. But I'm not seeing the progression I had hoped to by this time based on camp reports/8 preseason throws. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Minus - Gruden laughing and clapping Garcon on the shoulder after his drop.

Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Can't find the link, but read earlier today that the Garcon pass was an in-route adjustment based on the safety's reactions that both Garcon and RGIII read the same. As a result, Garcon altered his route and Griffin made the same adjustment on the fly. If Garcon and Griffin are making the same reads and adjustments, that's a good thing and would certainly explain why the pass may not have been better (Garcon should have caught it regardless - two hands on the ball = catch the damn thing).
Also this bit on our 4th round Guard.
John Keim @john_keim One thing I've noticed: Arie Kouandjio blocks with some attitude. Not sure how he'll develop overall, but has some nasty
If he can develop into a starter, he and Scherff could make our interior OL a whole lotta mean. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Other good stuff from last night:
Johnny Manziel was the Browns’ leading rusher with 14 yards. Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Kai doesn't necessarily need to be replaced as the place kicker because he's poor at kickoffs. Any active player can kickoff. I've seen teams use their punters to do kickoffs. Tres Way has a big leg. Perhaps he'd be willing to give it a try, if asked.
The one thing that the decision-makers shouldn't do is keep doing the same thing and hope for the best. We need better kickoffs. End of story. They need to find a way to get them or the team will surely pay the price for not fixing the problem. If that means Forbath needs to replaced as the placekicker because they can't find anyone on the team who can kickoff through the end zone, than so be it. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Nice article with snap counts for every player last night. Martrell Spaight led the defense. The first team offense played 27% of the team's offensive plays.

Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Plus:
Scherff is going to be good. When he is able to lock onto someone he wins. His hands were too slow some. Moses looks serviceable. Alfmo. Jones. Niles Paul was owning 99 until injured. Hatcher looked liked the most explosive pass rusher at times. Baker too. Murphy has unbelievable reaction time to the snap. He also looked a lot stronger. Smith is long and strong. I consider it a plus that our first team consisted of 3 back up LBs. Murphy, Smith, and Houston Bates. Minus: Special teams sucked. Our kickoffs are terrible. Fumble, etc., etc. Too many missed tackles. We didn't have an explosive pass rush with the exception of flashes from Hatcher. Murphy and Smith don't have that initial move to beat anybody. (Murphy did thread two defender's on the scramble pass. More attributable to his reaction to the snap than an explosive move.) They apply strong steady pressure but are not the explosive rushers that panic QBs. Should improve drastically with starters. DHall looked a little rusty. Our back up TEs (Hamm and Dixon) looked weak blocking. |

KC had a couple of real bad quarters of football. Expected from a player with limited starts. Peyton threw 28 picks his first year. Drew Brees has had some big int years. Romo and Luck same deal. The difference is those organizations let their qb's play through their mistakes. KC wasn't given that opportunity and may never get that here. Not with Snyder insisting that Griffin be handed the job after two years of sub par play. Had Shanahan been given more time here, KC would have at least had a chance to compete for the job. |

In preseason. To bad he doesn't win much when it counts. Plus he always looks pretty good in quarters one, two and half of the third. |

This is a smart post right here. I agree completely. Dan Snyder has decided that RG3 is the starter no matter what, just like always. Kirk Cousins for being in the league 4 years has had very little actual playing time. I still believe he should be the starter..... |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Went back and watched it again on DVR.
On the Skins' first play from scrimmage, Trent Williams literally was blocking 54, OLB with ONE HAND, while looking back at the run. Trent Williams is a plus. At times he makes it look so easy. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
it's preseason, we weren't running a real offense (they weren't running a real defense either), guys generally don't play as hard in the preseason, and it's the browns.
It wasn't a train wreck, so that's nice, but it didn't look like a 10 win team either. our Qbs and WRs are deep, so are #2/#3 SHOULD look good against scrubs. preston smith looked decent, hall looked bad, our D in general wasn't awful (but again... the browns). i never felt less interested watching a skins game, hopefully a win in a real game fixes that. |

Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Paul is a good dude and would have been a valuable piece this year. I feel awful for the guy. From a football perspective let's be honest, we didn't lose Tony Gonzalez. We did lose our only decent and durable all-around TE. Wondering what the plan is from here. We almost certainly can't go into the season with Reed and a bunch of TC bodies.

Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Truly concerned about our kickoffs. STs need help and one of the biggest ways we can help them is by limiting returns. Forbath simply doesn't have a good enough leg for the job.
More returns means more coverage which means more balls out beyond the 20 (and further) as well as more injuries. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
To me Griff looked the same, same short passes as last yr.As someone else posted, wheres the medium range passes that are over 20 yards in the air that Kirk seems to complete effortlessly?
Losing Paul is a killer,do the Jets have any tightends that are any good? I'd trade Griff to the Jets if they did. This is yr 4 for Griff,we shouldnt be looking for improvement like we are like he's a rookie,we should be well past that point.I still think at this point in his career he's Vince Young Jr.Once he stinks it up again this yr he'll be out of football pretty soon, maybe he'll hang on as a backup like Vick. Having said that,I would like nothing better to have VY2 make me eat my words,I truly hope I am wrong but I dont see it. |

Your probably right,if he takes it in for a td VY2 is probably done for the day,but that didnt happen and we got more of a sample size from Griff,I for one was not impressed.Even the deep ball to Garcon was thrown to the wrong shoulder but he was so frickin wide open he was able to adjust to the ball being on the other side. |
Re: Plusses and Minuses vs. Browns
Sigh, if Garcon hangs on to that ball we're probably having a different conversation right now.
Maybe, maybe not. I mean, the drop was all Garcon. Hit him in the hands, simple as that. Was it a great throw? Nope ... but, RGIII threw the ball to a spot where it HIT GARCON IN BOTH HANDS. A pass gets to a spot where the receiver can get two hands on it is a must catch, even when the throw is not perfect. However, even if PG catches it, while it improves RGIII's stat line, you still say RGIII's play was just what Keim and others were reporting -- "improved but inconsistent." He still missed some reads, he still was inconsistent with his footwork, and he still was not nearly as decisive with the ball as KC. On the other hand, he made some really good reads, made a couple good timing throws, and showed improved footwork. Further, even without the Garcon catch, and as I noted somewhere, PG saw the safety's reaction and adjusted his route during the play & RGIII saw the same thing and made the same reaction and anticipated Garcon's adjustment correctly. In preseason, catch or no catch, a QB reading and reacting to the D on the fly and in the same way is a very good thing. Bottom line, with or without the catch, RGIII looked improved but far from a finished product. On the other hand, KC looked smooth, sharp and decisive against 2nd & 3rd stringers (He's a four year QB, he damn well better look good!). When that is juxtaposed against RGIII's work-in-progress night, the comparisons are inevitable. I really, really, want to see RGIII get a lot more reps in the next preseason game. He is progressing. To continue, he needs to play and get reps against defenses with which he's unfamiliar. We know what KC can do and the things he needs to improve, cutting down INT's when the pressure's on, is not something reps in preseason fixes. On the other hand, RGIII getting comfortable with his fundamentals & reads against unfamiliar D's and in situations more closely approximating game speed is something preseason game reps can fix. In preseason, a lot of fans look at the stat lines and make judgments based on them. To that extent your right - 5 of 8, 100 yds and a TD looks a lot better than 4-8 for 35 yards, no TD's. Particularly when compared to KC's stat line. For anyone who breaks it all down through the preseason lens, however, I just don't think Garcon's drop changes the underlying conversation. |

He threw the ball away from the safety which was the right thing to do, Garçon had plenty of time to adjust. Had he led him down the field over his right shoulder it could have been a contested throw. |

According to Robert, Keim and some others, both Robert and Garcon saw the safety was closing on the inside of the route. In response Robert threw out towards the sidelines (on the other side of Garcon) to try and give a better margin of safety to catch the ball. Garcon just failed to put the ball away before hitting the jets. As Coach said, you won't see that very often out of PG...... |
