The new stadium is going to be in Va unless the mood changes in he next 5-7 years. The state made a huge push to get training camp and even kicked money in from the state General fund.
DC will want it but the cost is going to be prohibitive unless Danny can finagle a deal to sell FedEx for a mint and just pay for the the land and building himself. Also DC is not likely to sell the RFK site to him I wouldn't think. That's really the only viable site in DC proper. Maryland seems out of it. No decent options with proper metro access and they don't seem terribly keen, at least publicly. They have the luxury of already having a team in state so losing one wouldn't be catastrophic. Of course all of this is the situation now. It could all change in just a few years so we'll see.
Va seems to make sense, since training camp and the training facility is in Va. But again, it comes down to location. Just can't really think of anywhere in Va that would make sense, or anywhere where there is enough land and is near public transportation. |

It will probably just sit there and rot. Maybe a few college games will be played there but that's it. Va Tech and Notre Dame I think played there a few years ago. Maybe a bowl game as well. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
I would be curious to see if Maryland would take it over. They have to be drawing bigger crowds being in the Big 10 with bigger schools than the ACC (other than FSU most of the schools are medium to smaller in size). There is no way they fill it to capacity but Byrd stadium is crap too.

they've done a few college games there, a couple got 80k people out if i remember correctly. it wouldn't be a single college's normal venue, it'd be for special events and bowl games. |

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
I don't know a ton about how these things work, but if the hired an architect and have drawings that means they have a site already right? Usually you fit the design to whatever site you have. If the have a site worked out and it hasn't been leaked that in itself is impressive.

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
getting plans done doesn't mean there's a site already. danny can tell them everything he wants it to have, they can figure out the cost and footprint and use that to find the best site. plans can also be reworked if the site doesn't conform to what they want.
i just hope they pay attention to traffic and transit this time. |

I don't want to start a new thread for this but I just saw a potential model for the new stadium and I think it looks awesome. I know some will say "too potato-chip-y" but it looks great. My only concern is acoustics, if it will be an outdoors stadium I'd like something that makes the acoustics sound like the Seahawks stadium.

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
why would you design a stadium in 2016 without a retractable roof? that's important when you want to host superbowls or use the venue for concerts or whatever.

that's was my first thought too- it would be nice to host a Superbowl someday. I doubt they will get it without a retractable dome. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Idk, I think there's a lot of factors that go into having a retractable roof. Cost being the obvious one, plus the weather. Plus if you go retractable it could affect your field choice, and maybe they want to keep using grass instead of Fieldturf. So if you go grass do you do a retractable field too? If you want a retractable field then you need more land. Do we play enough games in bad weather to warrant a roof? I don't think so. As for this design, maybe they went open roof as a homage to RFK, I can see a passing resemblance in the design. Maybe that was one of DS's requirements, I remember it being mentioned when the topic first came up. Either way with or without a roof I will be happy. Besides, i think having a roof as a requirement for the SB is a little outdated since the Giants stadium went well.

if you want to make money, the roof helps get non football events. since it's only used for football 10 days a year (or less if you play in london), it makes sense to make it multi purpose. it could help defray the cost, and you know they're going to try and force taxpayers to foot most of the bill. the giants SB might have gone well, but what if there's a severe lightning storm? how happy is TV going to be with a 2 hour delay? |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
what's with the moat for kayakers?
is that the upcoming trend now for the next generation? |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
I like that the design appears to have a least one hump around the rim. Pulls on all the right RFK heartstrings.
what's with the moat for kayakers?

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
what's with the moat for kayakers?
is that the upcoming trend now for the next generation?
it's because it's a euro design firm, if you look at some of the newer apartment complex designs in denmark etc, they have bike paths that go to every apartment (even on the tenth floor), gardens on the roof, etc. i can't imagine them actually putting a moat around a stadium though. besides being expensive and providing no return, it also creates bottlenecks on the bridges, which is bad for a place where 80k people are going to come in and leave at one time. it's also a security and safety issue. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
60 Minutes just ran the story on the architect and showed the model of the stadium. The man is innovative and original.
|
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
I don't know if the final design will include a moat either since space will most likely be at a premium, but if they are trying to be creative I can see why they included.

Having a roof does not automatically mean no grass. The stadium the AZ Cardinals play in has a roof and natural grass. The field is on a "tray" and that "tray" is on tracks so it it brought outside for sunlight and to protect the field when other events are taking place. I really love the cool modern look of this design but think they would be crazy to not put a roof on the stadium. Having a roof means the stadium can be used for football (no roof = no Super Bowl), NCAA Final 4, political conventions, mega concerts and lots of other events. The roof makes it something that can be used 365 days a year and that's gotta help justify and offset the extra cost. |

I also understand your point about the roof but I believe it's not a dealbreaker, concerts can still be played outdoors. Sure some events will be excluded but if they aren't concerned about it I won't be. Maybe the cost of a roof on a design like this is a big difference, and rather than start from scratch they just want to go ahead with it. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Are there any retractable roof stadiums in the Northeast right now?
I don't see how not having one is a deal breaker. I'm sure all these things are being considered. That's what you pay developers for. |

Sure concerts and other indoor events can still be played outdoors, just not Nov-April. I agree that roof/no roof isn't a deal-breaker but with space at a premium its foolish to not build a year-round all weather venue. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Gotta think this design is more in the vein of marketing. The moat is an..."eye catching" conversation piece I'm thinking. Pretty impractical, but the concept of integrating green space and creating more of a park atmosphere is a good direction. Id agree that a roofed stadium is probably more appealing to DS and the NFL financially.

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Can't wait to swim in the moat in mid-December!!
Actually the rumor I heard about the moat, is that it would connect to the river that surrounds the old RFK location. So it might be a subtle hint as to the location. Not sure which river is there, I'll leave it to the local geography experts. |

Here's another hint at a possible location (National Harbor):

Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Other side of 95 between 295 and 95 there is plenty of land.
|
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
and national harbor would be the absolute worst traffic wise. you'd have to take the local with all the alexandria traffic to be able to take exit 2 there. without massive spending on road work, it'd be a nightmare (for any VA fans).
nearest metro stop is over 3m away (straight line, walking), though it does have bus service. it's not that it can't be done, i just don't think PG county is going to pay for the infrastructure work to support a stadium like that properly, and everyone else is going to suffer for it. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Yeah I'm not sure National Harbor would be the best choice either, if there's a dealbreaker to the land deal it has to be Metro access. Or they have an innovative traffic design that allows a ton of fans to get in and out very quickly. Speaking of...
This article from Redskins.com goes into greater detail about some of the concepts, including an interesting angle on the moat (it's also a security feature in addition to a wavepool/skating rink). I will admit I'm really intrigued about the ideas they have, including having leveled parking garages with grass on top for tailgating. With all that said no Metro access is still a dealbreaker for me. They either need direct access to a station or setup a deal like they had in the early years of Fedex where there was a ton of shuttles to catch between the Metro and Fedex. The latter is the worst case scenario obviously. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
Anybody read anything about containing fan noise or aspects of the design that would enhance a home field advantage?
I haven't seen anything about it and am a little disappointed. The Seattle design is the real deal and it works. |
Re: Report: Redskins to unveil drawings of new stadium, location tbd
I agree the National Harbor area is a terrible spot but there is land. I think ideally DS is going t get this thing built on the RFK site. It really is the best option from just about any angle.

land status can change, especially with the money it'd bring in. it just depends who's in charge of it. |

Agreed. Stadium or no stadium, this part of town needs a metro stop BAD. I think putting a stadium there would accelerate this process. |

PG county already has money from the Redskins stadium and if your statement was true about the "status " again forget that and concentrate on the RFK site. |
