I am of the opinion the NFL Combine is mostly a lot of fluff, hot air - Bull Shit.
But there is a narrow purpose for it and our GM Scot McCloughan stated it perfectly:

"This year we had 117 juniors come out, or underclassmen. Last year was 65. So that plays into it, too,” McCloughan said. “But that’s scary. [B]That’s why it’s so important to be here and get measurable, [U]get the medical, get the interview[/U] stuff with the juniors, the underclassmen.[/B] But it’s a strong draft, very strong.”

Medical exams, interviews and up close eye ball test is what this is really about. The rest is made for TV BS. If a players 40 time, bench press or other measurable changes your draft board, you are not a good GM. What they do on the field and against who (game film) is much more important than a Mike Mamula type work out.

Yeah there's what the fan thinks the combine's purpose is, and then there's what real GMs think the combine's purpose is. Getting to know the player and measure height and weight, get medical checks. Very valuable. But knowing how good a player is, you watch college football games for that.

I watched some of the OL and RB drills yesterday and I'd like to report (comment? express ignorant opinions?) on what I observed. Just so you know, I think there is value in watching these players work out at the Combine. You can get a direct comparison of the athleticism of players. So, here we go:

Of all the O-Lineman I saw, Laremy Tunsil and Ronnie Stanley were easily the most polished. Both of them have everything you could want in a LT. To keep it simple, I should just say "WOW!".

Jason Spriggs of Indiana also showed well at OT. Right now he's 6-6 301 and I'm sure he can carry more weight.

If we want a C in this draft, we'd better make our move early. Ryan Kelly and Nick Martin are both NFL starting material. After them, meh. Kelly is bigger and faster than Marin but hey are both very athletic and Martin has excellent quickness, if not speed. Kelly is a beast at 6-4 311 and although Martin came in at 6-4 299 he has the frame to play at 315 or thereabouts. So, two very fine center prospects, IMO.

At OG, Cody Whitehair and Chrisrian Westerman really stood out for their athleticism, especially Whitehair. Neither of them is big, as NFL guards go. That could be an issue for both of them. Westerman is very powerful and seems to be able to anchor against anybody.

Another OG who stood out was Sebastian Tretola. He's a bit slow but he has good quickness and an amazing lower body. Right now, he's 6-4 314 and I think he can improve his upper body. Tretola could become a real people mover.

At RB, Ezikiel Elliott is The Man! He has everything you want in a RB. He wowed me with his quick feet and his blinding lateral quickness. Derrick Henry is not far behind Elliot in athleticism. That really surprised me. Henry is 6-3 247. That is the kind of size than Scot M. loves. Those two were far and away the best looking RB prospects.

Kenneth Dixon has the best hands of any RB I saw. He's very athletic but he wasn't quite as fast as I expected. Nevertheless, he ran 4.55 at 5-10 216. I think he could become a very good 3rd Down back in the NFL.

C.J. Prosise was very solid at everything he did. At 6-0 220 he could handle some 1st and 2nd down carries, he's a very good receiver, he has very good speed, and he is supposed to be a ST maven. There is a lot to like about him.

Daniel Lasco may be the best athlete of the whole bunch. Does everything well. At 6-0 209, he's probably a 3rd Down back in the NFL. He's been hurt a lot.

Tyler Ervin of San Jose State is a good looking athlete. He can run and catch and he's been a good return man in college. He has a small frame at 5-10 192, so he would be limited to a 3rd down role and ST.

Paxton Lynch-underrated in my eyes, played under the same coach/system as Andy Dalton, for me he's as pro-ready as Goff or Wentz

Hackenberg, Jacoby B, Ark QB and Vernon Adams

I like Henry in the 2-3 round, big explosive back. His running style (not body type) reminds me of Murray; Eddie George size with speed. Not a lot of side to side wiggle but good downhill vision with speed and momentum. With an OL that keeps him clean in the backfield and build steam could put up good numbers.

He's only been a RB for 1 season, so he's still learning he was a former WR.

The NFLN guys were saying that despite his stature he toted the ball a ton some games 30+ carries. His quickness and speed are eye popping.

I'm interested to see how he looks. Footwork, arm strength release, ball placement on routes etc side by side with the other QBs.

QB thoughts on how the QBs looked at the combine:

The big 3

[B]Wentz[/B] delivered, to my eye clearly threw the ball better then anyone there. Solid footwork on 5-7 step throws. Ball came out clean, threw the ball with confidence. Looked confident.

[B]Goff[/B] quick feet, quick arm, footwork wasn't as crisp as Wentz (to be expected for spread guy) Very fluid, looks natural throwing the ball, not as much pop in his arm as Wentz though

[B]Lynch[/B]Didn't throw the ball as well as I saw on film, mainly b/c imo he was thinking about his footwork in 3-5-7 instead on just ripping the throws. To my eye he has one of the best arms in the draft but didn't throw that way. On film Pax is still my pick for #1 QB.

Other guys that stood out to me:

[B]Jake Brissett[/B]Now I'm speaking strictly about the combine. Jake threw the ball as well as anyone. Good footwork but a little plodding. But the his throwing motion and delivery of the ball is fluid and easy. Has plenty of easy velocity and wasn't trying to gun every throw (kinda like Wentz). But when it came time to throw the go routes I thought he was the best

[B]Stave[/B]- arm talent stood out to me, he was like a mini-jugs machine the ball comes out clean with velocity, compact and consistent. Every throw was solid and the throwing mechanics were consistent nearly identical. Footwork was solid but a little choppy; missed the least throws to my recall

[B]Boykin[/B]Threw the ball well. Nice compact delivery. Consistent mechanics. Footwork on the the 5-7 wasn't sharp but again its to be expected for a spread guy but threw the ball well (better then some pro-style QBs with solid footwork)

[B]Adams[/B]Very confident thrower with liver arm then I expected. Solid and consistent with his throws. Footwork was good for a spread guy

[B]Brandon Allen[/B]Rock solid footwork, good arm mechanics; not the most arm strength and it showed on the corner routes but had a good day throwing

I wish Coleman would have ran so I could finally decide where to rank these guys. But right now I got Doctsun as my #1 WR over Treadwell and Coleman pending their pro-days. I like the fact that he stepped up to the table and ran. Coleman I kinda understand with the injury but he did the vert?

I really like Doctsun's body control and ability to adjust to the ball

I think I can convince you. He can't be an outside receiver because we're going to draft him and he'll play play slot receiver for us since we already have DJax and Pierre on the outside. At least, that's what I've been day-dreaming about.

BTW, today Darron Lee of Ohio State ran [B]4.47[/B] with a [B]1.55[/B] ten yard split. Now get this: Lee is a 6-1 232 lb. LB!

Over the past few years the top S have been drafted in the first round. There are a handful with good enough tape...Thompson, WV boys, J Cash. If they put up good measurables i think a couple will be first rounders.

It's way too early to make anything out of this but . . .

The highest rated players on the list that the team talked to are the D Line players and the QBs.

Everyone else on the list consistently grades out as a mid to late round picks according to:

Agree, a good GM could hopefully tell the difference between a Trent Williams and Fred Davis when they both got suspended for MJ. One was a good guy who got caught doing something stupid and is now a perennial ProBowler, and one was a hopeless pothead. That's a lot of interviews with players, coaches, teammates, family, neighbors, etc, etc...

Getting a good player who drops for a random one-time incident & something to prove.. would be awesome.

Would love to see Shep in slot this year, even though I think he gives Garson a run for his spot on the outside. Imo Shep has the 1 thing PG lacks...separation.

I try to pretend I didn't see Lee b/c he'll be long gone by 21 don't want my hopes up...but I got some notes on some LB prospects I liked

Kyle Fackrell 6-5 245 4.72 --- Ran well, OK in drills, said to be good on ST. Could be a nice later round pickup.

Some players who looked good in conversion drills who might be good 3-4 OLB prospects:

Shilique Calhoun 6-4 251 4.83 --- ran slow but looked good in drills. I think he can cover. Need to check that 40 time at his pro day.

Kamalei Correa 6-3 243 4.7 --- Terrific athlete but very short arms. Could move inside.

Noah Spence 6-2 251 4.8 --- Slow 40 but a good 10-yard split. Did not look good in space. Might be a pass rusher only.

Shaq Lawson 6-3 269 4.7 --- I dont think he can cover either. Might be a 4-3 DE.

Yannick Ngakoue 6-2 252 4.75 --- Looked very smooth and comfortable in conversion drills.

Emmanuel Ogbah and Charles Tapper are two amazing big athletes who have every physical trait a team could ever want. I don't know anything about them as football players but Ogbah did OK in the conversion drills.

Didnt watch alot of the DL, i got some work to do there.

But generally speaking I'm never very worried about the coverage ability of an edge rusher.

Don't know much about the other guys but...
I like Spence, Lawson and Ogbah they proly get drafted in reverse order above. PFF was raving about Ogbah prior to the combine. Will post later.

For the ILB I was specifically looking for guys that were stout with an eye to helping out the run game. Even tho most of these guys have size some of them are scheme protected so u don't get to see them stack and shed

I watched the Interior D-Lineman drills. Most of the known studs checked out both in their measurements and their drills.

Andrew Billings - Very impressive quickness and power.
Joey Bosa - The Energizer Bunny. Versatile.
DeForest Buckner - Made everything look easy.
Jonathan Bullard - Fast, quick, and strong. May be a 4-3 guy at 285 pounds.
Kenny Clark - Great in drills.
Robert Nkemdiche - Amazing athlete at 294 pounds.
Sheldon Rankins - Runs well, very quick with great balance, and strong.
Jarran Reed - Top notch athlete.
A'Shawn Robinson - Same as Reed. Does Alabama have a 3-D printer for D-Lineman?

That makes 9 D-Linemen who could be 1st Round picks, IMHO.

With the draft so deep at DT/DE, I take either Ragland or Doctsun. I know I didn't answer the question, but I'd narrow it down to those two.

Now, if I'm future-proofing my team with the expectation of losing either Garcon or Jackson (or both) I take Doctsun. WRs make me nervous as hell, but I'd be fine on living with Compton and Mason for a season or two.

30, imo you listed guys who are late first rounders/borderline 2nd rounds. Ragland probably, Rankin 2nd choice

I think Spence, Ok st and WR go in the second round.

Alexander CB probably goes in the first. Sidenote ive heard a lot of bad things about his tape lately. The main thing is, its not good and he benefited from good safety play and the best Dline in college.
