I read that article earlier and it is a big heap of stinking garbage. Keim's comments on the signing show a much better understanding of how it fits within the Redskin's team-building strategy.
He is 29, but he is a young 29. Late bloomer. Coming into his prime. 53 games is not alot. Drafted in 2012.
28. He's 28 until December 15, when the regular season is practically over. These negative age insinuations are driving me crazy. He graduated college at 25, not a lot of wear, was drafted in the same draft as Kirk Cousins. Both just came off their rookie contracts. We are getting a player in his absolute prime.

Knowing what we know about his performance, he has a higher value than anyone that's going to be drafted next week. It's like we were gifted a proven number 1 pick that happens to be an all pro. And we're getting him for his prime years. So exactly what's not to like?

You say the money. I say what's it to you, not coming out of your pocket, and we have adults, smart guys, running the show. I guarantee we keep all the players we really want to keep. We fell into this one, folks. The football gods are continuing to smile on us...

Best part: I live about 20 miles south of Coastal Carolina where he went to school. Great to see a homeboy do well. By all accounts he was a great stand up guy there and won the conference championship, as well as at his high school in Greenwood, SC where his team won the state title.

A winner and a leader wherever he's been. Doesn't get any better than this!
Mixed emotions on this one. That's a lot of money for a 29 year old with one very good year under his belt. I do like his competitiveness though. He'll blend in with Cully and DHall well. If we somehow could get Ragland in Round 1, our D would have some intimidating dudes!
Cully is definitely gone after this signing, you meant to say how he blend with Breeland and Dunbar.

Between this move and the Eagles trade and what the Giants have done the NFC East is all ready a better division.Nice pick up but I would still like to know why you let someone of this caliber walk?

Please, the Giants went off their rocker this offseason with the moves they have made and $ spent. Obviously they believe the window is closing on Eli. Are they hiding Vinny somewhere in the building?

The Eagles...

Let's recap:
1) Sign their veteran, injury-prone, proven-mediocre QB to a two year 18m+ contract.
2) Sign an unproven backup to $7M this year and $12M guaranteed.
3) Give away the farm to move up and draft a QB that would probably be a 2nd rounder in a lot of years...thereby completely pissing off your $18M starter and (presumably) your $7M backup.

Who's drawing up the plans here?

Love this, love this, love this.

Worried about the cap space, but honestly the past 10 years have proven we can usually make anything work. We need $$ to go around to Cousins, Reed, and Baker next year, but we'll have something like $29 mil from Garcon/DJax gone & and the salary cap increase..

IF we get some Dline from draft - the only holes on paper seem to be finding real safeties, and getting better MLBs..

Re: Josh Norman CB is a Redskin

Need to know more about the financials(what the actual guaranteed money is), I think he is a positive team guy and locker room guy also. I still think we overpaid a bit, but looking at some of the other CB contracts, its not terrible, IE Janoris Jenkins & Byron Maxell. He is much better player then both, and his pay is only about 12% higher. Obviously SM must feel like he is a big difference maker that doesn't hit the market often.

It sure will be fun seeing Norman go at it with Dez and OBJ the next few years. With him and Breeland we've got some serious attitude at corner now.

50 million? Sorry but I would have passed. Way too much money for someone with one great year. As I said, almost all of the time when teams go out and overpay on a guy in free agency they RARELY get that return back on to the field.

The positive is he fills an immediate need. That's great. But I would not have done this deal. No way.

Evilgrin 04-23-2016 10:28 AM

Re: Josh Norman CB is a Redskin

At this point the deal really looks more like 2 years 36 million guaranteed, its alot per year tho.

It really depends on how that 50m is structured. And I can't remember where a recent contract was just a bad deal for the team (or player really) I think the skins really write fair contracts overall

I don't even think we need to mention Cousins when we are worried about next years cap implications, we are under the cap right now and he is at 20mm it won't be much more next year and probably be less due to a long term deal.

The concern are the others that are dirt cheap on rookie contracts right now.

hutch17 04-23-2016 10:47 AM

Re: Josh Norman CB is a Redskin

I was reading that Drew Brees was really pushing for him in NO and was willing to really restructure and extend his contract to make it work. That is very telling to me of his abilities when a top flight QB who has played him twice a year for the past four years is desperate to have him on his team.

Well looking back on Jackson's overall production since he's been here, I'd say we're not quite getting the return on that investment. I'd like for Jackson to play a full season and see him get the numbers he had under Chip Kelly.

The team last season was very different (in a good way) when Jackson was on the field. No one can predict injuries, yet with injuries he made a difference.

Free agents, like draft picks, are a gamble. Yet there are plenty of examples of FAs who have worked out: Garcon, DJax, Lynch, Palmer, Brees, Fitz, Revis, Talib, Steve Smith Sr., etc., etc.

Also, I read that Carolina offered Norman 11 mil a year, that's less than what Jenkins got in NY, I believe. That's insane IMO.

I do think that you can't JUST build through the draft. You do have to add free agents. My issue is giving Norman the huge contract. Time will tell if he lives up to it. My guess is he won't.

Janoris Jenkins over Norman?

Re: Josh Norman CB is a Redskin

61M for Janoris Jenkins, a slightly above average starting corner, or 75M for Norman, one of the best.

Jenkins and a special teams ace, or Norman?

I don't think there's any question the Giants handed out some bad contracts. Jerry Reece is skating on some real thin ice.

Is this even really a question... Giantone's biased opinion doesn't hold water. Take a poll of all NFL fans. Who would you prefer J Jenkins or Norman? I would venture to assume that the poll wouldn't be close.

Dude u can't make that comment, which was exactly what I was talking about "hating", and then back track. Your are directly implying the Giants wouldn't want Norman and your satisfaction of Jenkins.

You know the Rams chose trumaine Johnson and let their #2 corner walk. The Rams did this...the Rams.

There's no way the Giants gave Vernon a good contract. That was an overpay. He's averaging like 17 million a year?? LOL. C'mon, where is the proof in his past production demands that kind of salary? Jenkins is now the second or third highest paid corner in the league. Sorry but he's not the 2nd or 3rd best corner.

There is no way that either of these two will live up to the expectations of their salaries. We see it every year in free agency and this year will be no different.

The Norman signing is so big because he actually affects the game plan and plays Barry can call now.

Barry can leave these guys on an island and blitz the crap out of QBs now!
I agree Norman is a huge addition. This changes how we play defense. We will dictate to offenses.
It will be interesting to see how Culliver is physically and if we keep him. If Culliver and Kysheon Jarret can bounce back from injuries, our secondary will be really strong.
The drafting of ready to play Defensive Lineman is now critical for this whole thing to work well.
Incredible how a capable GM and few years changes things. It is great to have a FO that finally understands that a great Defense can get you to the playoffs and more. Defense and a strong O-line.
