When I saw that Schneed had posted in this thread, I was looking forward to reading an epic rant as only he can produce. I'm so disappointed.

Nevertheless, I think his points are valid - especially those related to coaching. There's little doubt that our coaching needs to improve going forward.

I put the poor running performance on coaching more than I do on personnel and it needs to get better.
I also don't get why we didn't adjust to this and start using screens or short passes in order to keep the chains moving. The middle of the field was wide open all night, but Cousins/Gruden kept insisting on trying to throw it deep.

I've seen a number of teams turn their running game into screens and short passes, when the actual running game doesn't work.

I feel like the Steelers just put up a coverage wall on deep passes, yet our team throwing into this coverage over and over without any success.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives
Venting is needed and natural but I'm going to focus on the things that make for go-forward concerns as opposed to situational things:

- I'm concerned about the coaching capabilities of our defensive coaching staff. I keep hearing it's "easier said than done" to match your best CB up with the best WR, and it causes communication issues, etc. Well other teams can do it, why can't we? We can't figure that out?

- 'Steiger is physically overmatched. That's not news, but it's also not going to get better.

- I'm actually not concerned with Breeland. On the first TD to Brown he was in position to not only cover, but make the pick. He just missed it. The fact that he hung with Brown there was a good thing because he'll at least knock that ball away 9 times out of 10. That was just the 1 out of 10 last night.

- I am actually quite concerned that DeAngelo Hall couldn't get over the top for the help on Brown on that same play. He was in the deep middle but reacted a step late to the deep ball to Brown. He didn't get there in time. He looks pretty good in run support but we are still limited at free safety from the center-fielder perspective.

- Cousins was nervous as shit in the beginning of the game. That's the one intangible piece about him that gives me pause. Everything else is good, the preparation, the intelligence, the toughness. But he exhibited a lot of jumpiness and anxiety in the first quarter, and he missed several throws because of it. He settled in, and he needs to settle in faster going forward.

- We don't appear to have gotten better at running the ball or defending the run. Our personnel is the same pretty much, which makes you scratch your head at McCloughan. But it also makes me concerned about our coaching staff on both sides of the ball. If they can't coach up any improvement then WTF?

- Weapons are great. DJax had a game. Reed was reliable. Garcon was reliable. Crowder was reliable. No news there.

- But I'm very concerned that the Steelers respected our running game so little that they chose to drop 7 or 8 into zone. Our coaches need to get the running game figured out. They have Trent and Scherff, two extremely high picks there. And it's not like Moses and Lauvao are devoid of capability. Well written.

A lot of last night was straight coaching or lack of.

Corners get beat, it happens, especially against the best in the biz. But Breeland had a flat out bad game.
He started out playing well, and was actually in good position on that first TD to Brown. That should have been intercepted but the ball went right through his hands. I think that got in his head and yes, the rest of the game he was smoked again and again.

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

The Steelers are the better team, but that had nothing to do with Cousins missing a bunny to Crowder that would have given us a 1st and goal, or the awful interception he threw when other guys were open, or throwing the ball out of bounds when he could have skipped for a first down, etc.

Also doesn't explain the penalties, or Kerrigan not falling on the ball. We shot ourselves in the foot in the 1st quarter then pooped our pants quarters 2-4.

Things that will be a concern all year is stopping the run and rushing the passer. At this point its clear that Kerrigan is just an above average player, he'll never be elite, and our D-line is extremely devoid of talent. No push on the pass rush and no stopping the run. Our MLBs aren't much to write home about either. I'd like to see Spaight get some minutes.

Cousins really needs to get it together vs good teams, its becoming extremely worrisome.

And above all else, we need a new center, that was embarrassing last night.

Positives:
no injuries
loss to AFC team - not NFC
WRs and TEs came to play
1st quarter defense
kicking game
turnovers

Negatives:
penalties
running game
run defense
Kirk (had some decent throws but was off most of the night)
2nd,3rd,4th quarter defense (shows that they adjusted and we had no answer for it)
Breeland Island
short week
turnovers

My reputation precedes me. I think if we find ourselves at the midpoint of the season looking up at other teams in the NFC East, then I'll go apeshit. Right now though I'm staying with the long view.

The Steelers outclassed us but it's one game, and it's a matchup driven league. I like how we match up against the Cowboys, now it's time to deliver.

There was more than one play where he could have jogged for ten yards with Pitt dropping 8 in coverage. He was playing as if they were blitzing when they weren't. Not much thinking on his feet last night, more like he was just going through the motions of what they practiced and trying not to make a mistake. He did not even sniff what they were giving him. But its ok. It is week one and he did not play alot of preseason at all. Remember game two he did not even play a snap. Edit: we have been mediocre for as long as i can remember. Our schedule is as tough as i can remember in a long time. It doesn't take a genius or an overly keen observer to say 11 wins is a lot.
But this is the second or third time you have scoffed at this team winning 11 games. You wont be lol'ing so much about it if we win 9 and the division. Which I think is everyones highest expectations regardless of our preseason pumped up predictions.

I have to wholeheartedly disagree. That was a dumb decision in a game full of poor execution, but he had those instincts last year, and they don't just disappear.

Unfortunately last nights game was too big for him (perennial SB contender and perennial MVP caliber QB on the other sideline, first MNF game of the season, etc), and he was out of sorts for the most part. I believe he will learn from it and bounce back.

Remember last year when Eli through the ball out of the back of the endzone when that was the one thing he should not have done? Even franchise quarterbacks make mistakes. Lets see as Cousins second year under center goes along if he does more good than bad before we write him off....
Yes though it was really bad. Lol.
Negatives: kerrigan trying to pick up fumble on their ten when we had early momentum. Huge turning point. Huge.
Penalties - i think everyone on our offense had an offsides. At home? Wow.
The first td pass to Brown sailed right through Breelands hands. Gotta make that play.
Our inability to go vertical. Wtf happened to our passing game last night?
Run D.
Defensive in game adjustments.
Cousins - awful game. Hope that is a result of not playing much at all in the preseason. His timing was way off.

Positives: we dont face Ben n Brown again - they are lethal.
We will still win the East.
It is early. We will get rolling.
No injuries that I am aware off.
Predictable on offense.

One of my biggest concerns, when we play elite teams, is that they can dictate how the game is going to be played bc Mcvay/Cousins seem to always make the smart rational play and take what the D gives them.

Like Kirk said in his interview, Steelers went soft zone giving Kirk the underneath throw. The Steelers know we cant run the ball so they give us the short stuff and wait for us to shoot our own self in the foot with a penalty or missed throw.

Kirk and our offense is to robotic and rigid. Its like the D Coordinators are playing a computer and they know exactly what the computer will do in any situation and can bank on our predictability.

Admittedly no. I was counting on some kind of improvement coming in both sides of the running game, attributable to another year of coaching and continuity. So far that's not materializing and it's disappointing.

Adding the laughing smilie though is not a good look for you. You come across as more interested in being right than in the team winning as often as possible.

The laughing emote was because at this point, you have to laugh at the continued inept from this team at times. (especially in primetime) I have no interest in being right. I would rather you be right and our team go 11-5.

I still think we can be a playoff team, we've got enough talent and room for improvement. One game doesn't make or break the season. We had a bad night against a good team. We had some chances and didn't cash in.

Me too, but only in the vein that we can win a bad division, just like we did last year.

If we had a modicum of improvement in the run game, on either side of the ball, we at least would have been more competitive.

Don't get me wrong, there's 15 games left and a ton of time. But I can't stick with my lofty expectation of 11-5 when we got run on like that.

I think he realizes that the strength of the offense is passing the ball. A few of those runs Jones literally had no chance. The interior of our line is pure shit on running plays. They were more than solid in pass pro. But 7 carries is ridiculous.Gotta do better than that.

FrenchSkin 09-13-2016 06:22 PM

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

I spent the whole game wondering why Joe Barry wasn't telling Norman to cover AB. Breeland is a very good YOUNG player... he lost his cool against maybe the best receiver in the league, that's understandable, he'll get through it.

That being said, I'm not that disappointed by our D. They did a pretty good job (...until the whole team seemed to have lost all hope.)

Nickel defense worked pretty good. I think that was a smart move: D-line is our weak spot, you put only 2 D line, then 4 LB (usually bringing pressure with either Smith and/or Kerrigan) and 5 DBs, smart move. Only mistake was to leave Breeland getting beaten by AB.

Also our run game wasn't so bad... only under used.

Apart from Kory, our O-line looked good, pass protec was outstanding. I really think we should try to find someone at center.

donofriose 09-13-2016 06:29 PM

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

Had no problem with Norman staying on one side. The problem was the Skins left Breeland on an island on the best receiver in the NFL. That is just dumb.

Receivers and Oline looked like they did their job. Cousins seemed off and just did not execute some passes that he usually does. He had an off day. Only problem is those off days seem to happen against other elite QBs.

The Browns will beat us and folks will start calling for a head coaching change...the best coach on the team is Bill Callahan..but seriously we need a center,a pass rusher and time to let cousins throw it downfield to see IF he really is the QB of future. We have one of the best group of WR's in league and that is all we got?? might as well trade some of them if we are not going to use them..BAD BAD COACHING..

I hope you are joking, Bill Callahan is not a good head coach. He is a good coordinator and offensive line coach.

He lost the team in Oakland, and failed as a Head Coach at Nebraska. He was the Head Coach when Nebraska lost to Texas Tech 70 - 10.

Seriously, I should have known that since I was thinking our new look passing game was going to just destroy their zero pass defense that the exact opposite was going to happen. Duh.

I blame Cousins for not being accurate early or often. Also the lack of run game. We could not ever really open up the passing game. Why should they have ever worried about the short pass, screen, or run? Dropping 8 all night. Just taunting us like little children. Dang.

Defensewins 09-14-2016 07:49 AM

Re: Skins vs. Steelers Positives and Negatives

The one positive is it was just game 1.
Matt Jones is not the answer at RB. He runs straight, no bend at his hips, no leverage. Too easy to knock over. He will be injured soon if he does not lower his center of gravity while running.
I have said this since I joined this site, rule #1 in football 101 stopping the run and being able to effectively run the ball. If we can not do this we will have a long season with no playoffs. It fucking kills me we suck at the basics in football.
According to some, we are "built" to be a passing team. You have to learn to walk before you can run or pass in this situation. We made the decision to spend a ton of money on our receivers and TE. We subtracted players from last year and did not replace them with quality talent. We basically created our current weakness.
I understand a team is built over time. But regressing should not happen.
