I agree with all of this. I never understood the Joe Barry hire, unless nobody else wanted the job.
What frustrates the shit out me so far in 2016 is the lack of doing the basics right. Our zone defense is the perfect example and we suck at it. You play zone up to a certain point in the play, then cover a man. I am seeing receivers get released, left wide open, at the worst time so the defender can cover an empty part of the field. Releasing your zone to cover a receiver right before the qb throws it is basic football. On a pass play the goal is to cover players, not form a pretty pattern of defenders on the field. That is shitty coaching.
I know last year we blitzed less than any team in the league? Is that still true?
PFF for last year has the following:

11th ranking for highest percent of blitz per drop back (32.57%)
3rd ranking for creating pressure off a blitz (seattle and car were 1 and 2)
22nd ranking for pressure with out blitzing

https://www.profootballfocus.com/team-blitzing/

I dont know about this year's stats to date. I was surprised we had such a high and effective blitz number for last year.

Re: The Defense Only Thread

Next year I'd want our defensive starters to be:

CB - Norman and Breeland
S - Hall and Cravens
OLB - Smith and Kerrigan
MLB - Draft Pick/FA and Draft Pick/FA
DE - Murphy and Baker
NT - Draft Pick/FA

We will also need players for depth in the front 7 and work on finding a replacement for Hall. I'd say this year or next is his last here. So that's 3 new starters plus depth guys. There is a lot of work to do on D still. Hopefully we have 1 hell of an off season and draft.

This. I think most of us under exaggerated, myself included, how many holes were on this team when he got here. It takes time to build a great 53 man roster and get them to play well together.

I will say, At least our defense has yet to completely run away from a rookie receiver the way Dallas ran away from Doctson.

Anyone hear how Spaight is doing? He had concussion symptoms and was out Sunday. I really hope the guy can be healthy and see the field (in that order). I have high hopes for him, but the health concern seems very real.

I'd be curious for the assessment of our safety play. I don't have much of a feel for whether DHall has taken command of the position or how Bruton is doing.

From Tandler:

Martrell Spaight said that stress and other factors may have triggered concussion like symptoms. Has been cleared for contact.

Three of our defensive starters at the beginning of last season aren't in the NFL right now:

Riley, Knighton, and Hatcher.

I don't know what this means compared to this year but it just struck me as interesting.

I'm down to give him one more season, but after that, please don't do the Haslett and let him stay on for years. Marinelli is doing a damn good job in Dallas considering the shit talent they have on defense. They basically have: Sean Lee. Sometimes scheme can overcome lack of talent. I feel like since Haslett was here, it was all, "We lack talent, so once we get it, we'll be better." Now don't get me wrong, we aren't amazing on the defensive side of the ball, but I think we're significantly better than Dallas but are performing way worse in my opinion.

Im gonna watch what happens to Rex in buffalo...I wouldn't mind at least giving him a call if he is fired. He isn't a HC but he can coach some defense. Also I think our coaching staff already has a couple guys on it who could do a better job than barry.

Re: The Defense Only Thread

I'd agree. I guess I keep feeling like over the years since Gibbs came back we were always missing a big piece somewhere along the line. I think Gruden actually is a damn good coach and a great offensive coordinator (same with McVay). Now, I feel like we're hamstrung a bit by an unproven defensive coordinator. Again, willing to give him another season, but one could argue we are improved defensively, and it seems we're worse.

Maybe the offense sustains more drives and the defense is better? Who knows? I just didn't think Hatcher/Knighton/Riley were THAT important to us.

Looking at some F.O. stats tonight, specifically the defensive drive stats:

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2016 DEFENSIVE DRIVE STATS

We rank dead last in allowing points per drive.

We rank dead last in forcing punts per drive.

We rank second to last in allowing touchdowns per drive.

Are we not the 31st or 32nd defense in terms of talent, we are just playing that way.

I'm really disappointed in Joe Barry.

The only reason we aren't dead last in pretty much every other category is that we are 9th in forcing turnovers per drive. All turnovers aren't created equally, some are on the D, some are on the O, but it isn't a way to consistently win games and get our defense off the field.

Respectfully disagree. We lack talent on defense, but we aren't last in talent either.

I guess the point I was trying to make is Barry doesn't make his unit better than their talent and arguably makes them worse.

Good coaches do more with less. Barry does not.

Imo they made some questionable moves in the off season that hurt the team and also had some bad luck.

Imo Barry is a limited coach but the unit lacks the star personnel to make up for it.

This team is built to play defense with their offense until personnel upgrades come in in the following seasons.

Other then starting Su'a I don't see personnel changes that can make difference

Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, and Trent Murphy make better rushing DEs than OLBs....they should just get away from the 3-4 altogether and element 4-3 principles..... Shanahan is the one who wanted the 3-4.... he's lone gone now...we need to go back to the 4-3.....not just on nickel downs either.

I'm solidly on the Fire Joe Barry bandwagon. Isiah Crowell isn't the greatest running back to ever grace the face of the earth, 7 ypc is downright embarrassing. They never had to bounce the runs outside either because the middle was a sieve all day. We will lose every game where we don't get turnovers. I know injuries hit hard but there's no excuse for poor tackling. When wideouts like Andrew Hawkins are breaking tackles like they're Jamal Lewis you know you've got issues.

The talent on the line, and back to the LBs is no better then mid 20s, and that is the ceiling. It's always weird to have great skill position guys with no rush. Kendall Reyes, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean Francois, Golston, how many of those guys even make another squad.

Ricky Jean def is a solid rotational guy...he'd play on a lot of teams. Baker is really good and resigning him is a must. We really need to add a difference maker on the d line and not just a guy this offseason

Agree 100%.

Terrible in coverage and terrible in run support. He is a lot like Perry Riley, his first step is in the wrong direction 50% of the time.

We have more talent from top to bottom than Dallas' D. They play way above their talent level. We play below ours.

No real revelation but having Spaight as the Sam in a 4-3 wouldn't be any worse than what we saw today.

I see Norman, Breeland, Cravens, and Baker, everyone else on D is just a guy at this point. With Cravens its more potential then where he is right now. Preston Smith was supposed to take a step forward not disappear. I know coaching matters, I just don't see much talent on that side of the ball. Which is why I think they look to move cap space to the defensive side this offseason.

Murphy and Kerrigan are more than just guys. Compton is just a guy in terms of talent, but he is the play caller. Other than that, I agree with you. Maybe Fuller will develop and maybe Smith will too. I hope so.

Re: The Defense Only Thread

Any ideas or adjustments on stopping the run?

Outside of Baker, we are doing horrible against the run with our front seven. Compton and Foster have been just ok vs the run, but the play in front of them really affects their ability. So Im not gonna put it on them.

Bruton and the SS position in general is usually a spot which helps clean up running backs when they may get to the second level. Usually because they play off they are not impeded by the blocking scheme, they can get to a spot to A)make the tackle or B) make the runner turn back inside to pursuit. Bruton has been extremely ineffective in doing either. Maybe Barry is saying to sit back...I don't know. But Strong Safety play is not doing us any favors in run support.

We really need someone else along the line to step up versus the run...Bruton or someone else at Strong Safety needs to provide better support at the second level and we need to tackle better.

Thoughts, ideas? Baltimore is gonna run the rock, we need to play better

Evilgrin 10-03-2016 10:06 AM

We need guys that can be more active along the line, and Compton takes himself out of plays alot.
