Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am in the play calling.
I was just sitting here remembering how pissed I was at half time. Initially, they show a very balanced approach and the offense was humming. Our opening drive was 10 min or so. The Oline was clicking, and Jones was running as hard as he ever had. And then McVay, Gruden, or whoever (Cooley says McVay calls the plays, but Gruden has to have a big influence) start going 5 wide with empty sets we stall, eat very little clock, and our defense is on the field for an eternity. 1. If running is working why go away from it? They came back to it at the end. The Patriots and us are apples and oranges. They find a weakness and exploit it till they can't anymore like calling the same play 5 times in a row. They force teams to play in ways they don't want to. We are allergic to success and go away from it on our own. The same BS explanation of the fades will no doubt be put forward. "We saw matchups we liked" The offense was walking it down the field with ease so obviously there were match up advantages happening when the oline and Jones were kicking their butts. 2. Our defense looked like pure crap in the 1st half. I don't see how Jay could have any confidence they could come up with a stop after that 1st half. The turnovers are great but really unpredictable. Why wouldn't Jay and/or Mcvay call plays in a balanced way to eat the clock and protect the defense, especially since Cleveland looked clueless at stopping it? It's like they outsmart themselves. Jesus. |

I hope all the pessimists here will forgive me for believing that we can win the division. I believe that some of you are over-estimating our competitors and under-estimating our own team. We have many strengths as a team and we can improve some of our weaknesses during the season.

I underestimate no one, I knew the Browns would be tough. If anything Pryor and Crowell are under appreciated, I was very impressed with those 2. |

I see back to back division champs. We are deeper than the rest of the division, and we have the best front office in the division. When other teams start falling off because of injuries, we will get stronger. |

Somebody explain to me how the defense is so bad even after adding Norman.were the players we let go that good ? I thought the team was supposed to be improving. who are we missing the most this year. is it the players or is it the scheme. Im not worried about the Offense and special teams but this is a bad defense.

The DL and OLB are very average. When you cannot stop the run or rush the passer, mediocre is the best you can hope for. The Redskins needed DL help and got none... no help at safety. It is a myth there is good talent on defense, or good coaching. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
You beat a team you should have, and you barely did that. Goodbye Joe Barry please.

Strong safety, ilb, and dt/de...these are areas where we are not getting good play or its inconsistent play. Also, 2 younger players who looked good in preseason but haven't shown the expected growth...breeland and Preston smith...a lot of unmet expectations so far this year. We are leaning on these two to perform and it hasn't been good. Players like wil Compton, Norman, and Chris baker have been good, but they need some help. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
Our first two draft picks need to be DL.
But I said that for the last draft and McClue got us zero. I'm still not that much of a McClue fanboi. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
The o-line play was much better today. We finally got the running game going. Long looked good at Center & Arie looked decent for his first time out.
We definitely have to figure out something on D to stop the run. Crowell was gashing us at will. |

Yes. Joe Barry should be fired now. Don't wait until the skins are out of playoff contention do it now there has to be someone in house that could do a better job... |
You beat a team you should have, and you barely did that. Goodbye Joe Barry please.
We came in to the game strong, and the D and offense finished the game strong. Granted I was ready to turn it off in the middle of that, but we won the game with strong plays on both sides of the ball and good ST. As for tackling, hopefully it's emphasized more, but lets remember we are already down several defensive starters, and our backups were in the right position to make the plays, and they simply didn't. As much as I dislike the Barry pick, players in position to tackle the runner HAVE to tackle the runner. If they don't then I put that on the player first and GM second. The coach's job is to get the players in the best position to make plays. When we have +80 yards of opponent's gain coming after initial contact, that is poor player selection and poor play on the field. (imho) |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
I do too. The sacks were more on Cousins than the line, especially the last one.
I will say this: as much as I appreciate the grit in grinding out the win, I would really like to see more of a killer instinct when we have a lead (or from the get go). We should have crushed that team. They have 1 good WR (not elite) and a good RB (not elite), a rookie QB, and a porous defense. I think they have a good coach and come looking for a brawl every week. But we ought to have won without it being so close. We cannot seem to go for the throat. Makes me crazy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When the defense lets a pathetic team like the Browns score 20 every week is going to be a grind. The O played good but they should have scored 40+ on the Browns. I liked the run/pass balance. In the end it was a win and that's all that matters. From where they started 2-2 looks pretty good. This team is improving every week and that's the key to success. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
Browns scored 20 on Baltimore, 24 against Miami, and 20 on us. Only Philly held them to 10.
There is a whisper in the wind that Cleveland is tanking the season (talk about early rumors!!) and the way Hue Jackson put the ball in a FB's hand for the first time when they were about to take a commanding lead doesn't do anything to dispel that notion!! |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
I'll take 20 points with this D any week.
I'll take 20 points with this D any week.
True. For this D giving up only 20 is almost like pitching a shut out. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
We may be down starters but the starters were not playing very good. To me it's probably an improvement to get in some of the backups.
The only way they stop anyone is turnovers. Can't expect those week in and week out. E |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
I'll take 20 points with this D any week.
It occurs to me that in terms of points, we have improved each week on both sides of the ball: Points surrendered: 38-27-27-20 Points scored: 16-23-29-31 Let's hope that trend continues - beating the Ravens 33-17 would be fine with me. Worried about injuries - we don't have enough depth anywhere for that not to really hamper us. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
Saying that we can't win the East makes no sense to me, it all comes down to our division games. We still get the Cowboys and Giants once more each, and we still have the Eagles twice.
Eagles look pretty good but I think it's a matter of time until someone exposes their horizontal passing game, all the screens and short out routes. A team with real corners is going to get up in their face and bring the safeties into the box and dare weak ass Agholor and Dorial Green Beckham to win. The defense is fierce, though. We had Dallas routed if not for the 3 missed TD passes by Cousins. He's playing better now. And the battle with the Giants was so close, we forced the turnovers when we needed to. We can beat them again, especially at home. Don't get down, there's lots of time remaining. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
Hard to imagine the defense could have looked worse. Against a terrible team with a third string quarterback, the defense managed to surrender just shy of 400 yards. Crowell and Johnson averaged 6.9 yards per carry over 24 carries. There aren't words to explain how bad that is. The Browns coverted two-thirds of third downs, and how many of those were third-and-long?
It is me or does this team blitz less on third and long than just about any defense you've ever seen? And what's the point of dropping every back into coverage if the opponent is going to covert anyway? |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
The maddening part is the defense doesn't seem to learn from its mistakes. They continue to give too much cushion and free run on third downs. Get up in the receivers' face and challenge them already.
|
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
The Browns aren't the garbage team on offense everyone is acting like they are.
In run blocking/pass pro, I believe at least three of their offensive linemen rank in the top ten. Reiter was owned yesterday, but you have a future HOFer (maybe) in Long and two other great blockers. Crowell is also a BEAST of a back. Kessler also took what the defense gave him. Reminded me a lot of a less mobile Dak. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
The biggest thing I noticed was our lack of pressure. We were playing safe with our DBs and the pressure just never got there. Even when we sent a blitz it was picked up.

That was the loss of Kerrigan you were noticing. After last week maybe now people will STFU about getting on that guy's case. |

We need to bring Sua more, he's a playmaker period. Norman never needs to blitz because he's literally the only guy that can cover... Where has smith been?? Huge surprise so far, and not a good one. Hopefully RK and Bree will be back |

Brutton Getting tired of Barry not adjusting (if we would have lost, I would have fired his ass and promote Fewell or Manusky as DC)
1) Do you think part of that bad 1st half by Norman was on him recovering for illness this week? He really didn't seem a 100% to me. On The Pryor TD he got safety help and was outrun. I mean when I get sick I'm not well for a few days, I know I'm not a professional athlete, but this is not something you can train. Anyway, he showed he was a great player during the 2nd half, and I love his tackling. For a high paid CB, he's not shying away from contact at all. 2) I'm really high on this O-line. 3) Am I the only one thinking we miss Keenan Robinson ? Compton might be a great teammate and leader... but he's not strong enough for the position IMO. Foster was the only one tackling properly but he's not elite. 4) I'm really high on this O-line. |

Have we seen much of a Kerrigan/Murphy package? With Smith not lighting it up, I wonder how that would look considering Murphy has been doing really well with that extra weight. I know he lost some, but he still looks huge. |

I think the key is getting all three of them on the field in nickel situations. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
One thing I'm going to throw out there as a glimmer of hope for our team, in general. I think our depth is better than most NFL teams. The further you go into the season the more injuries and the more you have to dip into your bench, even bring guys up from the practice squad to play a role.
We have a few impact guys, and we'd like our starters to be better in a couple spots. But the depth on the offensive line, at WR, and in the secondary is very good. You never know, it's depth like this that can help you pull out a game you weren't supposed to win. |

It doesn't show on the stats sheet but he was huge and needs to be resigned long term. |

How about that NFC East by the way - one quarter of the season is in the books, and it's the only division that does not have a team with a losing record. Wasn't it Kirk coming to start his first every game and throwing an early interception only to bounce back and beat the browns what spurred our 2012 run, lets do that again!

Is the NFC East back or is it too early to tell?
That's kind of how I look at it. Think about the things that are sustainable, and what isn't. Is this line blocking well, and does it figure to continue? I think so. Are the receivers getting open and do they figure to continue? I think so. Is Cousins delivering on time and on target? First two games no, but against NYG and Cleveland he's been back to his normal self, which includes the once-per-game brain fart but otherwise on point. The defense probably will not take the ball away at this rate. But I also don't think they'll tackle this poorly again, and I don't think they'll continue to give up 3rd downs at a 57% clip (NFL average is 37% and the next worst behind the Redskins is the Lions at 47%). I do think our division is much better than it's given credit for, I've thought that all along. There was a lot of improvement in the offseason. |
Re: Redskins 31 Browns 20 post game talk
BTW, let's hear it for Coach Kotwica. Special teams has been very good this year -- our PK and P are as good as any in the league, coverage has improved over last year, and Crowder has helped our return game tremendously.

These are the number of 3rd down conversions allowed per game. Note the bolded. With small sample sizes like this, any statistical observation is bound to revert towards the mean, at least somewhat.
We'll get better on 3rd down defense, and the Eagles will begin to get exposed a bit more often. I expect a tight race between all 4 teams coming down the stretch.
