It seems like a simple idea to implement. But then again I'm not a narcissistic asshole. Maybe an asshole but not narcissistic. How can you be a loser for so long and not make and personal changes?
Easy, when the whole world shits on you, you just bury your head in the sand (the sand is your $100 mil yacht in this case).

There is a simple fix here as previously mentioned but no way DS would bring in a real football guy and hand him the keys, as a self-made billionaire he has probably convinced himself that he's the right guy for the job.

It’s a unique case study of extreme ego or he’s just so detached from reality.

I couldn’t imagine being in the small fraternity of “majority NFL owner” and yet be so oblivious to knowing what it takes to win in league after 20 years experience . What isn’t he understanding at this point?

I’m starting to believe mentally he is off.

Listening to beat reporter Michael Phillips this morning...he said the Kevin O'Connell move is extremely significant.

1. Gruden is a lame duck, and O'Connell who is very highly thought of in the Org will hands down be the odds on favorite to replace him...this move is totally with the future of org in mind.

2. Who was down at Senior Bowl scouting QBs? Not Jay Gruden, but O'Connell. O'Connell was extremely active in workouts and observations.

3. Phillips said the Redskins will take a QB with one of their first 2 picks. Its a done deal...the question will be moving up in the first round is very much on the table. It give O'Connell a head start in working with "his guy" right away.

I do not believe he will EVER do this. It's just not in him. He wants his fingerprint on the team, so that if they ever DID have success, he can say..I DID THIS! Just like Jerry Jones...he wants the credit for the success...but unlike Jerry, he has nothing to say when they're not having success...which is why you never hear anything from him anymore.

Meanwhile, after this season when Gruden is gone, Bruce Allen will sit quietly in his cave, occasionally peeking his head out to taste the air with his forked tongue, wondering if he can keep sliding under the radar for eternity.

Well...it fits the trend across the country and I do like the fact he is warming up the car. O'Connell is highly thought of in some parts of the league.

The move makes more sense now...

Phillips also briefly talked about McVay...essentially McVay NEVER was gonna be the HC here. Gruden was coming off back to back winning seasons and even if Gruden was fired, McVay would have refused the job because him and Jay are extremely close. McVay too principle to take that job at that time. I thought that was interesting.

That's a good point...also within that trend of how to build the team quickly on the rookie deal. Of course, you cant bust out wherever you pick in the first, but getting competent play is big.

Look at Jerad Goff...after the KC game this year, he was extremely pedestrian at QB. Forget the Arizona game, leave it out...and he a basic bitch at QB against better competition. He's in the SuperBowl because of the talent around him. Also Mitch Trubisky and Dak Prescott, lamar Jackson....build that running game and defense folks!!!

I'm not against the idea of O'Connell taking over the reins although, I know very little about him so I honestly have no idea whether this is a good move or not. What I dislike about this notion is how the FO is handling this. If they are determined to fire Gruden then they should just do it right now, instead of making all moves that undermines Gruden's authority in front of those assistant coaches. It belittles Gruden, and how can we really expect assistant coaches to completely respect Gruden's decisions if they all knew Gruden will be gone soon eventually. It is essentially like a married couple where a husband is cheating on his wife and plans to divorce her next year, meanwhile the wife know everything about it and yet the wife is expected to perform her duties as wife until they divorce.

We have to consider effects of this "strategy" in long-term. I cannot imagine any good coaches would want to work under Snyder from now on. But then, I'm making judgment based on what media is reporting so my perspective on this might be off..

The story about McVay showcases McVay's dignity - it is safe to assume McVay learned things from Gruden and he appreciated it, in return, he respected Gruden.

The writing has been on the wall for Gruden for a while now. Whether there's someone waiting in the wings doesn't matter. He's on the hot seat regardless. If he wants to throw a serious wrench in the works go 11-5 next year, win a playoff game, and force Snyder to give him another extension.

Listening to Sheehan podcast...didn't see the title til around noon: Kevin O'Connell: Redskins Future Head Coach?

Sheehan saying O'Connell is known as extremely bright and league wide respected...known to be a great communicator. Says O'Connell as a Coaching candidate is definitely "a thing". Offense will have to improve and Jay might be hesitant to give up play calling if Colt is QB.

I think Jay should give up play calling...it needs a spark.

Unless they were to move all the way up to 1 to get Haskins (and I don't see how they have the ammo to make the move), then there is not a QB worth moving up even one spot for. I don't believe any of the other QB prospects are legitimate first round talents.

Long-term, this seems like a good financial strategy for building a team, too. Elite QBs are just too stinking expensive. Its almost better to have a merely competent QB (who is paid as such) and then spend the teams money surrounding him with talent.

Schaffer knows nothing about evaluating talent. If anyone became GM, it would be Kyle Smith.

Schaffer's only logical room for movement with the team would be to be Team President if Bruce moved on to another role.

That's actually not true from what I've read in the recent past. Schaffer actually is more of a football guy than people know. Obviously he excels in contract negotiations, but I wouldn't say he knows nothing about evaluating talent.

Perhaps that was an exaggeration to say he knows absolutely nothing, but he's certainly not as strong as Kyle, Alex, or Doug. Doug doesn't seem to want an expanded role (and he shouldn't, given how much of an idiot he comes off as when he talks to the media about anything other than football talent) and no ones knocking on the door for Alex or Schaffer as their GM. Kyle is supposed to be incredibly well respected as a rising talent. Similar to O'Connell, he's someone we can't let get out the door.

I don't think any stock can be placed in Bruce's statement on play calling.

Cooley has gone in depth about the opaque public position on play calling when McVay was first promoted to OC.

He said the lack of clarity was to protect McVay from media and public pressure and scrutiny.

The same thing may very well be going on presently.

I've seen plenty of reports to that effect for Kyle Smith, but nothing for Schaffer. If other teams are interested in Schaffer for GM, then we're going to have to lose one of them at some point and I'd choose Smith in a heartbeat.

An alternative is that we do as i suggested and promote BOTH of them: Schaffer to Team President and Smith to GM. Win/Win.

Bruce explicitly said Jay would continue to call plays (At least for now).

As I've pointed out before, Jay is in a lose-lose position if he lets KO call plays. Jays only shot as maintaining his own job security is to keep calling plays and hope the team wins.

I don't believe anything Bruce says, but given that they promoted OConnell and fans generally seemed to like the move, if Bruce wanted to ride that small amount of good will, he could have said KO would call plays or that Jay would decide. The fact he explicitly squashed the fans hope means that, more likely than not, the plan is for Jay to call plays.

If Jay lets KO call plays and the skins win, it doesn't help Jay. KO will get all the credit and Jay will be sent packing.

Jays only hope of remaining as HC is for the team to win in such a way that Jay receives the credit. After 5 years, its abundantly apparent that Jay is very self conscious in this regard. He's consistently brought in lower-level talent to his staff and spurned guys who he could perceive as being a threat to him. I have no confidence Jay will suddenly start doing what is best for the team and not what Jay thinks is best for him personally.

We also must remember that promoting KO was almost certainly not Jays idea. reports were going around for a while that Snyder loved KO and wanted to do everything possible to ensure he didn't walk away like McVay did. KOs promotion was almost certainly a directive from Snyder.

The same Gruden that had McVay calling plays for a couple of years under him, the same Gruden that had KOC calling plays last year when Sanchez was in the game?

Of course winning games at any cost helps Gruden. Do you really think if they win 10 or 11 games it won't help get Gruden an extension? Or at least put him in a good spot to land a HC job elsewhere?

Bottom line is Gruden needs to win, period.
The same Gruden that had McVay calling plays for a couple of years under him, the same Gruden that had KOC calling plays last year when Sanchez was in the game?
McVay was here before Gruden. I'm sure Gruden was happy McVay got another job when he did, because if he had stayed around another year, you better believe Jay would have been fired and McVay promoted. And you're assuming it was Gruden's decision to give KOC a shot at calling a handful of plays... given the reports we've heard about how Snyder has been enamored with KOC for a while, its quite possible this was an edict from above, although that is just speculation.
Of course winning games at any cost helps Gruden. Do you really think if they win 10 or 11 games it won't help get Gruden an extension?
No. I don't think it will help him all. If O'Connell is calling the plays, he will get all of the credit for the teams success.
Or at least put him in a good spot to land a HC job elsewhere?
It might help him, but it depends on how many jobs are open and what other candidates are available. Jay has had a track record of mediocrity as an OC. He's respected by the players because he's a "players coach" but nothing about him inspires confidence as a HC. The only scenarios where i think other teams want Jay as a HC is where the team experiences a degree of success which i think is outside the realm of possibility.
Bottom line is Gruden needs to win, period.
Jay is smart enough to understand the situation that he's in and his only chance of staying here in 2020 or getting a job elsewhere is having monumental success this year. Do you really think Jay feels that his best shot of having that success is:
A) turning over play-calling duties to someone with incredibility limited experience
B) "Controlling his own destiny" and retaining play-calling duties himself

MTK 02-05-2019 05:30 PM

Re: Redskins Promote Kevin O'Connell To Offensive Coordinator; Matt Cavanaugh Moves To Senior Offensive Assistant

McVay started calling plays under Gruden so I don’t get the logic that he’s so insecure to not let anyone else handle those duties. And he also had O’Connell calling plays last year when Sanchez was on the field.
