Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
The OP was updated to reflect the Ereck Flowers and DRC additions.
They continue to sit here with $12M in cap space, and we continue to see no news on the Brandon Scherff extension negotiations. I'm personally frustrated by both of those items. There are still some helpful players out there, and here we sit with cap space going unused, and one of our best players going into the final year of his contract. |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
I'm wondering how much a potential Reuben Foster suspension is affecting all these decisions. I see that Mason Foster is a potential cut, but the team probably won't do that until they find out R. Foster's fate for this upcoming season.
Also, I don't expect Scherff extension until the summer (Trent, RK were all done during the summer). I assume they'd want to get their spending for this offseason over and done with before they break the bank for Scherff. |

Though if you're sitting there with $12M in cap space currently, and you know you're planning to renegotiate Scherff in the summer to pick up even more, then why the hell aren't you being more aggressive now about finding solutions in free agency. Inside LB aside, we have other needs. Just frustrating. This team says it has a burning desire to win but it acts like it's content with 7-9. |

During his interview with JP yesterday, Bruce said that these things generally get done around NFL deadlines, so I don't think you should worry. Really, there is any pressing reason to get a deal done now. There are no free agents out there worth spending big money on, so we don't NEED the additional cap space a Scherff extension would provide. It also makes sense to wait until after the draft and post-June 1 cuts before extending him. Its entirely possible that during the draft, some team makes us a fantastic trade offer that involves Scherff. Or the draft plays out in such a way that a very talented guard is the BPA on our boards by a wide margin - possibly more than once. Or there is a surprise cut after the draft or June 1 of a player who is only slightly less talented than Scherff who can be had for half the cost. Or Scherff could get hurt working out. These are just scenarios that make it wise to wait. If something doesn't get done by July/August, then we can start wondering if maybe the skins don't want to extend him or Scherff doesn't want to be here. But its way too early to get worried. |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
I'm not so much worried that Scherff won't get done. I think he will and the point is well taken that it's usually the summer.
My beef is with the assertion that there are no free agents out there currently worth spending money on. There are certainly no big names left, but did you know Ryan Grant is available? With our shitty WR situation I would think the team would sniff around on him. He's nothing more than a #3, but we need a reliable #3. We need everything. |

And there are always a plethora of players cut from other teams after the draft and June 1. Players who are release do not count against the compensatory pick formula. Free agents we sign now would. So, if the low-mid tier players available now aren't significantly better than those we could get later, WHY NOT wait and see what we get in the draft, wait and see who gets released after the draft and June 1, and then fill whatever holes are remaining? By doing this, we position ourselves to maximize the 2020 compensatory picks we receive (right now we should get a 4th rounder for Crowder). Other than grabbing top free agents that sign in the first few days of free agency, there really is no benefit to try and fill remaining holes at this stage of the offseason. |

Yeah, and Ryan Grant was released for a reason. The same reason we let him walk last year - He's not any good. In my opinion, he doesn't represent even a slight upgrade over what we have already - and we are fully expected to address WR in the draft. So why sign Grant now just to drop him in a couple months? |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
Well he was dropped by Indy because he was making $7M or $8M or whatever it was. He might be gettable at $1.5M now. But he's just an example, there are lots of guys like him out there and if you don't think he can help us I think you overrate our roster a bit.

This. Actually for the last 10 days we've seen decent "depth" guys start to come off the board. Example is our old friend Tom Compton...He signed a 1.3ish one year deal to come in and provide the Jets depth in the interior. He was decent for the Viks last year in the same role. If your looking at CB someone like Morris Claiborne is still out there. Versatile..played well last year. You have a TE Maxx Williams out there, never reached his potential in Baltimore, but a solid blocker and still young. Vet Pass rusher, still a couple out there as a fail safe for Ryan Anderson slated as starter. Tre Boston, solid contributor at safety for year...So options are available. Sitting around and saying wait for the draft...well sure, but your setting yourself up for reaching for need, plus the draft is not predictable. Guys you like could be taken in front of you or you draft a guy who needs more time on the bench versus playing ie Louisville tackle from last year. |

I don't overrate our roster - I just think you're overrating his talent. The skins have familiarity with Grant, so I think its telling that they haven't made him an offer. |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
The OP has been updated to reflect the acquisition of Eli Manning and subsequent contract extension.
There may be a corresponding move or two that we don't yet know about to clear the necessary cap space to accommodate Manning's contract. Perhaps the long-awaited Scherff extension. I haven't yet updated the likely cost of the draft pool. Trading away the 1st and 3rd rounders will mean that we don't have to spend as much on our draft picks, so that's likely to come down from $4M closer to $1.5M or $2M. More to come. |

Is it really north of $12M right now with no rookies signed?
Is it really north of $12M right now with no rookies signed?
yes. we'll have about 4M left after rookie deals (Finlay said theyd take up about 8-9M because we have 2 1st rounders), but a Scherff extension and releasing Davis could free up 10M. That would give us some room to sign a veteran safety and a couple other veteran backups in the post-june1 cuts. |

I didn't know that they could manipulate the 5th year option contract number for players like Scherff, that's awesome. We're in really good cap shape. |

We're in really good cap shape.
Smith's injury was unforseeable, but i just can't stop thinking about where this team would be if we hadnt traded for Smith. We'd have 20M extra in cap space this year and Kendall Fuller. which means we probably woudl have been in a positon to cut Norman and sign other really good/elite starters in free agency. |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
The one random FA signing I want is Berry. FS is still a HUGE question mark and could bite us all season long. Maybe 2-3 year deal even though he's old and injury-prone.

Very smart observation, hadn't really looked at it like that. Snyder and his FO's should be barred from making trades. Seems like they are snake bit when it comes to trades. |

Why does everyone want to get rid of Norman? He's still a top cover corner. I love him. He's always hustling and trying to force turnovers. In your scenario, which starters would you have wanted to sign in FA? |

I would be shocked if he gets a deal longer than 1 year with any team. I'm thinking the same for the vast majority of veteran FA's at this point in the year. |
Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status 2019
I know PFF's opinion isn't the final word or anything but they usually have a pretty good grasp on where individual players stack up.
They had Norman as a top 5 cover corner last season. https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-the-nfls-top-five-man-coverage-cornerbacks-in-2018 |

To cut him this year would only save us half that, and then we'd have to have spent that money on a corner in free agency to replace him, so there's really no point in doing it. Next year he's set to make the same, but its not guaranteed so we can cut him and then use that same money to sign TWO corners of josh Norman's caliber. |

I was just curious which guys you had in mind when you said that.
In making that statement, i was saying that Kendall Fuller's presence (we gave him up as part of the deal for smith), would have made Norman expendable. We'd have cap savings from cutting Norman, which we could have used to address other areas of the team, we could have used it on a FA CB (there were many available in free agency), we could have drafted one (assuming we spent money to fill needs elsewhere in free agency), or we could have just rolled with Fuller an Dunbar as our top 2 corners. Hell, we could even have cut Norman and resigned him (think this could be an option next year). My point was the additional 20MM in cap room without the smith contract, plus the presence Fuller, would have given us the flexibility to dump Norman's ridiculous contract. |

Josh Norman is overpaid for his level of production. The Smith contract has Bruce Allen all over it - paying a decent QB over 35 for that amount of money for a five-year deal is just ridiculous. |
